The s*x scene of Blade Runner was so fricking gross and infuriating

The whole point of the movie until that point was that K truly was in love with Joi, he truly cared for her even though she was literally an holographic AI.

Yet instead of accepting that, he fricks another woman while "pretending" it's Joi? How is it not different from just cheating on your partner and imagining you're having sex with them?

If your girlfriend is left on a wheelchar and you can't frick her anymore, are you just gonna cheat on her? No, if you love her then you understand your relationship can't be based on sex anymore.

K should have understood that the woman he loved just couldn't give him sex, and be ok with that, not just frick a literal prostitute while pretending it's Joi, that's fricking gross.

Also, holy mogging.

It was weird and gross because it was intended to be weird and gross. K was living a fake half life with the facsimile of humanity and the movie is a series of vignettes on the way to him realizing that.

Anon, K went and BOUGHT the Joi before the movie started. He spends his bonus from killing Dave Batista upgrading her so he can put her on his phone so she's not tied to his apartment. You think he'd never seen the ads before?

Several characters across the duration of the film express disdain when they realize he has one. Sort of the way your mom reacts when she sees your body pillows.

So the movie that tries to make you think robots are people,, and has a robot protagonist with feelings whom you follow the whole movie and see him battle with loneliness and self worth never intended to make the viewer think Joi was an actual thinking being in love with K?

They just added all the scenes of Joi wanting freedom, Joi enjoying the rain, Joi being happy when given the chance to leave the apartment, Joi telling K she loved him before she was killed, etc. for nothing?

Anon, if the director never intended to humanize Joi, then what was the point of her final scene in which K finds out she never loved him?
If Joi wasn't supposed to make you think up until that point that she, just like K, despite being robots, had a soul, then what's the point of the blue hair scene?

Replicants aren't robots. Literally better, stronger, faster, smarter synthetic humans. We literally watch jared leto carve one's uterus out with a knife early in the movie.

I would argue that the point was to contrast the much more evidently artificial nature of Joi with K and the other replicants, much in the same way the first film went out of its way to portray its replicants' humanity against the callous sociopathy of its human characters.

I personally thought that was ambiguous in a world with synthetic humans crafted as a slave labor force. My interpretation was Joi either genuinely wanted to make K happy or was programmed to make an excellent facsimile of it and syncing up with a prostitute was the best way she could come up with to physically interact with him thr way she wanted. Of course the interaction itself wasn't being directed by Joi, but from K's perspective it'd be like he was having sex with Joi.

I didn't think it was weird given the premise of the film, and I never really decided on which side K's Joi copy was on. It could be much like Replicants the Joi AI could break out of its human set limitations and eventually come to feel real emotional connection. Or it could be Joi was never anything more than a complex emotional manipulation. I'm still not sure.

But that's the problem, even K knew he wasn't having sex with Joi, Joi was an hologram. If he actually loved her he wouldn't have fricked another woman while pretending it's Joi.

I was already 99 percent sure you were a woman but thank you for confirming it. Your critical mistake is in thinking the male brain and the female brain are in any way equivalent. You are absolutely correct that a good woman only cheats when she's no longer in love, women have sex to pair bond. Men have sex for all kinds of different reasons and it isn't necessarily true that they don't love a woman they are cheating on. This is an inescapable truth, hope you have a nice day.

I don't think it was odd honestly. Calling the prostitute was initiated by Joi so he wasn't emotionally cheating on her. And it kind of emphasized the fact all of them were artificial on some level and slaves more to a point and were making the best of it as they could.

Taken at face value, K was attracted to the prostitute but not emotionally, he loved Joi and longed to touch her but couldn't. Joi syncing with her gave both of them a small illusion of what they wanted. Again, they weren't human and it's questionable how much true free will they had (especially Joi).

Also, most men don't feel a huge amount of significance from sex emotionally. Many a man had slept with a hooker and gone home to his family. Yes it's cheating and wrong, but on a certainly level for men prostitution is often just more interactive maturation.

yes. the whole idea was joi providing more realistic emotion for K like she was programmed to do. joi cannot provide physical touch so she brings a real girl to replicate touch. it had nothing to do with the other woman

      >A bunch of love less autists misunderstand the character climax of the story
The purpose of the scene was Joe realizing that Joi overcame her programming to feel genuine curosity and love so he can overcome his own programming to make human decisions too.

"Dying for the right cause, is the most human thing we can do" is reference for a reason. It isn't just Joe realizing he can be noble. It's realizing that Joi saying "I love you" was entirely human because she sacrified herself to say it.

I love my wife, but if she offers to have a 3 way with a hot escort I definitely would.

I mean, K didn't ask for it. It was Joi that contacted Mariette to arrange that whole thing and he's clearly against it in the beginning but gets on board when the sync completes. She wants to be real for him for the night and he's never been touched before in any context outside of someone threatening/hitting him. It was all Joi and without her, he would likely never have felt any urge to pursue something like that. Can you not imagine yourself in his shoes, getting to feel as though you're physically touching the person you love who is forever out of reach? When your life is as shit as K's, you take what small pleasures you can.

I can't believe you wrote this out. I refuse to believe you did. in fact I know you used chatgpt to create this drivel. It's not possible to browse Cinemaphile and write such trash. It hurt to post but I know you were grinning just imagining the (You)'s and look at how well it worked.

I don't think 2049 is all that bad, so it grieves me to see such peabrain takes on it. Even as a middling Villeneuve flick it deserves more.

ITT: people who spend more time thinking about the plot of BR2049 than the hack writer and director ever did.

FWIW the scene was kino, as were a few other scenes in the movie, unfortunately somehow they didn't add up to a good film

    >You're a good Joe

Here we have Joi reminding him K he's a good person and he must do the right thing in a serendipitous gift of the goddess moment on the Hero's journey. Its a transcendental
and synchronistic event. If he had interpreted this like a Cinemaphile cynic he would have just gone home and cried.

people just forget that Joi isn't as advanced as replicants so she can't be as creative as them which is why she goes with the generic joe

K even comments on that or something with "half the code, twice the beauty"

Idk man it's probably some Slavoj Zizek "virtual sex" commentary.

You see, you are not actually having sex with the woman, but the ideology of having sex with women, thus you're really a homosexual, OP.

It's funny how BR2049 made a ten times more genuinely emotionally investing romantic story in just a side story of the film compared to Spike Jonze's Her where that's the entire film.

For most people the actual physical "love" part falls apart completely in Her, especially in any scene where the love part wants to be materialised (the prostitute sex scene, that sex scene where Joaquin just lays and talks to her) which come off as extremely cheesy and "quirky" which in result end up falling completely flat.
Funny how there is the exact same concept of the threesome between an AI, a prostitute and a man in Her and literally no one ever talks about it because the execution of the scene is like any standard rom com flick, the AI part being completely secondary and not used. Not to mention that in Her the prostitute is entirely meaningless in the act itself, while in BR2049 all it's a very character involving scene for all three characters, not just literally but in narrative terms also.
It's a physical manifestation of K's character development.

In short, Spike Jonze didn't know how to approach the concept of a man falling in love with a computer in a serious way so he had to make it extremely quirky to have an excuse for most scenes, while in BR2049 it's executed completely direct and tasteful with zero pretense at all.
