If you search Dahomey in Google you get "African state well known for its woman soldiers and being a hub for slavery".
They might have fricked up with the English version of the Wikipedia already, but everyone remotely interested in history knows that Dahomey was the big slaver state of Africa.
Most african americans descend from Black folk sold in Dahomey markets.
It's an interesting place with an interesting story if they treated it in all honesty. Slaver states still had interesting things going on.
Pretending they were progressive and enlightened thousand of years after romans had stopped owning slaves is like spitting in the face of new world africans though.
It's a worse offense than portraying the KKK as great people.

Blacks can do no wrong, but why they chose this specific state for their lies I do not know

            Anonymous

They chose Dahomey because they were known for using female soldiers. Stronk womyn and black qveens were too good a combo to pass up, slavery or no.

It's much more complicated than you make it look

Dahomey was a slave state who tried to preserve slavery to keep its economy functioning. The American civil war was much more complex than this.

    >“The Woman King will tell one of history’s greatest forgotten stories from the real world in which we live, where an army of African warrior women staved off slavery, colonialism, and inter-tribal warfare to unify a nation,” Producer Cathy Schulman said of the film.

What the absolute frick. Exactly the things they didn't do.

    >There will be creative liberty taken and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. The Kingdom of Dahomey engaged in some morally skewed (to put it lightly) practices that were the norm of this time period

If they were the norm for this time period why did slave traders have to outrun the Royal Navy blockade to get in and out?

This is fricking ridiculous, the inspiring story of a slave state and the brave women that fought the abolitionists. How could they think this was a good idea.

      >Both domestic slavery and the Atlantic slave trade were important to the economy of Dahomey. Men, women, and children captured by Dahomey in wars and slave raids were sold to European slave traders in exchange for various goods such as rifles, gunpowder, textiles, cowry shells, and alcohol. Dahomey used magical rituals for slave trading. Prior to being sold to Europeans, slaves were forced to march in circles around the "Tree of Forgetfulness" so they would lose memories of their culture, family, and homeland.[30] The purpose of this ritual was to prevent the spirits of the slaves from returning and seeking revenge against the royalty of Dahomey.

      >Other war captives who were not intended to be sold to Europeans remained in Dahomey as slaves. There, they worked on royal plantations that supplied food for the army and royal court, and they were reserved for human sacrifice in the Annual Customs of Dahomey.

      Slave traders and slave holders.

this is... fricking insane. Slavery was the norm for this time period? no it was fricking not. What did the traders bring back from other countries? tea and coffee, spices. That type of shit.

There is one factual post, the responses to it are hilarious accusing the poster of racism and an African American who doesn't seem to know black slaves in America and Brazil came from Africa. What on earth can you do with such stupidity.

        Anonymous

I am Brazilian and I already predict the shit show this movie will trigger over here. I took time to read some pages on the history of the the Dahomey state and they literally sent numerous diplomatic missions to Portugal and Brazil (Both during the colonial period and in the first half of the 19th century) to persuade slave traders in these two countries to buy Black folks exclusive from Dahomey and not from any another African slave state. The more you read about it, the more ridiculous this movie appears to be. But similar episodes have already happened here and the reponse from Black nationalists was that 1. Africans viewed slavery as soft serfdom and therefore they thought they sold Africans to work and live in similar regime in the New World and 2. They claim African Kingdoms only sold slaves to Europeans under duress and threat of war. I feel sick to know good and honest people here will loose their jobs and be branded le ebil waycists for pointing out this hypocrisy.

Just don't mention slavery or the annual ceremonies where as many as 3000 people were butchered.

    >Davis stars as Nanisca, the fearless general of the Agojie, who encounters the battle of her life when Europeans (likely British or French) approach their kingdom with colonial intentions.

Porto-Novo was attacked by the Preventative Squadron in 1861 in an attempt to end the slave trade. Its "colonial intentions" to free 150,000 people is it.

Its fun being the bad guys. I look fondly on touring "war of independence" museums in the US. We never talk our near invincible marital prowess up at home like that. I could feel the ancestral blood of unstoppable red coated supersoldiers pumping through my veins. In one museum in Philadelphia I got nasty looks for cheering at the wrong part of a patriotic dramatic monologue but nobody actually shot me.

It isn't an African history movie. Maybe you could make a movie about this time period that didn't over-emphasise slavery but not about Dahomey. You might as well remake Schindler's List as Himmler's List.

      >Brits stop blacks from slave trading and human sacrificing
Wait, were we the good guys?

Pretty much. Admittedly it helped the abolitionist cause that a lot of the profit had gone out of it.

Hmm, would something like this work better?

The Dahomey kingdom is at the height of its opulence and power but the foundations of the empire are beginning to crumble. The leaders believe they must build more temples and sacrifice more people or their crops and citizens will die. The protagonist , a peaceful hunter in a remote tribe, is captured along with his entire village in a raid. He is scheduled for a ritual sacrifice until he makes a daring escape and tries to make it back to his pregnant wife and son.

I'd prefer an adaptation of Flash For Freedom! honestly but I think that would be impossible which is the great irony here.

Flashman hates 'Black folk' (a word that appears in every other line) and ends up fricking one of the Dahomey women after he's bought her, but the reader will ultimately be nothing but disgusted at the institution and practices of slavery in Dahomey and the United States of the time. I'm amazed its still in print its content is so offensive, on the face of it anyway.

This film is being cheered as progressive and wants you to think slavery is not worth mentioning.

Which is socially useful and which isn't?

    >European encroachment into West Africa gained pace during the latter half of the 19th century, and in 1890 King Béhanzin started fighting French forces in the course of the First Franco-Dahomean War. European observers noted that the women "handled admirably" in hand-to-hand combat, but fired their flintlocks from the hip rather than firing from the shoulder.[10] The Amazons participated in one major battle: Cotonou, where thousands of Dahomey (including many Amazons) charged the French lines and engaged the defenders in hand-to-hand combat. Despite the compliments given to them by the Europeans, the Amazons were decisively crushed, with several hundred Dahomey troops being gunned down. Reportedly 129 Dahomey were killed in melee combat within the French lines.[16]
    >The French sustained few losses, but the Fon suffered several hundred dead (129 within the French lines).[6]

I hope the movie is a bit accurate, the Agbome or "dahomey" like the movie calls them weren't even a real nation or tribe, they were part of a kingdom/tribe/nation called Ayada or Ayade, these used to be traders with the moors (north africans/berbers/arabs) and probably got their knowledge in slave trading from them, also the horses and clothing fabrics, the king of Ayade had three sons, one of these sons funded the city the Agbome lived in, named Agbome itself, he named it like that because of the wall protecting the city which measured an agbome, an african measure, he entered in war with his siblings for power and lost the majority of his male soldiers because of this which led to him using females instead

    >During a battle with French soldiers at Adegon on 6 October during the second war, the bulk of the Amazon corps were wiped out in a matter of hours in hand-to-hand combat after the French engaged them with a bayonet charge.[18] The Dahomey lost 86 regulars and 417 Dahomey Amazons, with nearly all of those deaths being inflicted by bayonets; the French lost 6 dead.[19]

Small unit tactics. The fought in groups, and your flippant disregard of the power of the bayonet reveals your ignorance of warfare. Long rifles of then and now were and are considered spears that can shoot.

When the bayonets charge, every ooga booga in the Fon line is suddenly more concerned with his or her own survival than winning the war. They would become disordered and impossible to command, and might even attack each other in their desperation to flee. The French stories about the war tell of long, skirmishy engagements where they were continuously fighting for hours, inflicting heavy losses. That suggests a disorganized and fragmented enemy. If they were still in good order, they could retreat properly.

It's not even that. The story is set a few decades before the war with the French.
It is set during the reign of Ghezo (this guy

        uhhhh Dahomie bros?

), who with the help of a black slave runner from Brazil usurped the throne from his elder brother and had his nephew killed.

          >black slave runner from Brazil
This guy was not black or mulatto for that matter, he was one colonial Portuguese-Brazilians, hence why Klaus Kinski played him in Cobra Verde and if you take a look a the cast of this Woman King flick, the White actor's character is called "Santo Ferreiro" wich makes me suspect he is a fictionalized version of Felix de Souza(the Brazilian slave trader's actual name), either that or he is meant to be some Portuguese slave trader(wich doesn't make sense since by the time the movie is set, the Portuguese had already abolished slavery in their empire)

I saw bits of the trailer of this. This woman was saying that the Europeans were enslaving them and that they wouldn't stop until they had the entirety of Africa. That's false though, the Europeans weren't enslaving people, the African Empires were, and they collaborated with the Europeans.
It was considered in African culture that some people born in certain tribes were born into slavery and serfdom, so the Empire was just doing what was natural.

Why wouldn't they just show that in the movie?
