It was most certainly not a great film
From the very start he was picky about roles and only did ones that were likely to boost his power level. He never took a quick-cash gig. Maybe that makes it a little cynical to see his work as a pure business strategy, but that's how he treated it. He did Hollywood as a business plan, pure and simple and it worked.
It was hardly an unbroken streak. Post-couch jump and pre-Tropic Thunder it looked like he was done. Pretty impressive to turn things around like that.
