It's really good. Ending is stupid tho. I think the idea was to say that Pacino became the killer he chased after, but in a way it is portrayed it more comes off as "Al Pacino was the killer all along" twist which makes no sense, it's an issue in how the ending is staged.
Doesn't really matter, the point is the same: if you violently frick men you will become a self-loathing serial killer.

I think Cruising (1980) would have been better if it ended like Looking for Mr.Goodbar (1977) with Diane Keaton...instead of the meh ending, have Al Pacino's character go cruising again for real. From the MO there is at least 2 serial killers, one that stabs someone in the back and leave their body in the room, and another who dismembers his victims and throw the part sinto the sea. The second one was not caught.
During the filming of Cruising, gay groups were protesting and made so much noise, certain parts had to be redubbed -- I wonder if the originally intended ending was something edgy before they chicken out, after all, Al Pacino's character in Cruising have some similarity with Diane Keaton in Looking For Mr. Goodbar, Generally a good hearted but young person with some questionable judgement and thrill seeking tendencies.

I've been to a few of the private clubs in New York and LA and it is obscene. While not all are like this, the majority don't acknowledge stuff like the Mineshaft and want to portray the community as 100% happy and supportive. If you're talking about the movie on the whole it's definitely worth seeing, the script may not be very good, but the gritty, degenerate atmosphere and colors of the lates 70s NY are fantastic.
