It’s a double edged sword anon. You will be able to create better work cheaper than you could, and make do with less, that is objectively correct. However, while this means indie and non-commercial artists can make greater works, at the same time, there’s gonna be a deluge of moronic swamp shit. Think of how much sandy shit already exists without AI, and now imagine an executive with the power to put a movie in a computer and say “make a hundred more like it.”
That being said, I’m generally more excited than fearful. I’d rather have to sift through more content to find the diamonds in the rough than have absolutely nothing. I also think the entertainment industries budget is obscene, it’s just gluttonous to spend $250 million on a movie that isn’t even that good

All things considered it will be easier than ever to sift through it all as well. AI's always have a tell and most people can parse out corporate bullshit right now, imagine how easy it will be with AI at the helm.

AI is and always will be incapable of creating anything truly original or consistent

Anything it creates will require so much cleanup work it'll be effectively indistinguishable in labor costs from a studio production.

The only people who are going to benefit from AI are executives who will be able to pay writers and cleanup artists less since they're just polishing AI concepts instead of creating their own.

I don’t wanna defend aislop but posts like these are baffling to me because they seem to be under the delusion that this shit will just stay at its current level of quality and never progress, like there hasn’t been a massive leap in just a couple years alone. The valid criticism of ai is the lack of a human element, harping on the current tech limitations is just asking to get your shit kicked in within a few years.

        Anonymous

I'm not talking about technical quality, I'm talking about technical execution.

If you put the exact same prompt into an AI twice, you will get two different outputs. You can tell an AI to make a picture, you cannot tell an AI to make a picture and then make the exact same picture but with the hand moved .3 centimeters to the right, and then a third picture that's the exact same with the hand moved .5 centimeters to the right, et cetera.

An AI cannot tween. An AI cannot do smear frames. An AI cannot consistently create a full 360-degree character appearance for turnarounds. An AI can at best do keyframes and scene concepts that will then require significant human intervention to make work as animation.

          Anonymous

These are all things not outside the realm of imagination.
You already have AI that can extend the borders of a pre-existing image. So you could easily make a program that takes a preexisting image, makes the AI recognize the disparate elements, and then say “move the hand .3 centimeters to the right, and then generate a third picture that's the exact same with the hand moved .5 centimeters to the right, et cetera.”
Smear frames and tweeting would work on the same principle, and a 360 degree character appearance is pretty easy to input

        >just wait bro, trust me
Guess what dipshit, we aren't even close to being there yet. Motion control gaming has come a long way since the Nintendo Power Glove but we're still nowhere near the level of widespread viability beyond gimmick level and that tech is far less complex than machine learning.

        Anonymous

There are some things that simply require an actual intelligence that machine learning can't effectively replicate. this "AI art" has been improving yes, but only in a singular direction. It is getting better at drawing these images of cartoon characters in anime styles and not fricking up the hands and shit, but they are all the same "character posing facing the camera with some nonsense blurry background". It isn't actually showing any intelligence for he understanding of motion and narrative that's needed for something like a comic or animation. That's why when you see an AI comic that someone's made it's just slightly different versions of a character pasted in generic poses over generic blurry backgrounds with speech bubbles pasted on top. And when you see animation it's some janky looking walk cycle or swirling transformation out of a hallucination with no meaning.
People keep saying that AI art will help the indie scene and bring down corporations, but the only artists this has actually threatened ARE the indie artists who specialise in making simple pin up poses like in the OP image, and porn in a similar vein. Actual large scale projects especially like animation will still be gated behind those with lots of money or those with lots of time and talent. Corporations will just use this to cut corners or making generic assets for advertising and such, saving them money and giving the common person no benefit.

And you'll end up with a hand stiffly rotating around a predetermined axis point like the cheapest Flash animatic you've ever seen. Pure AI animation would make Johnny Test look like Bluth.

            Anonymous

You were the one who made the example moving the hand and nothing more. You could easily have it do something else.
Your position is nonsensical. If AI can generate images, and animation is made up of images, then AI can or will be able to generate animation.

Nope, they sit there and feed the bot images and sift through the shit to find the handful that look ok. It is the work of hours to find one picture that looks passable of someone just standing there,

        Anonymous

        >isn’t the whole point doing requests on demand?
No, because it can't intuit those requests. Here's what I do, I'm calling it the Red Triangle Test
I loaded up stable diffusion and asked it to draw me "A single red triangle on a blue background." Pic related is the kind of thing it gave me.
It took NINE tries to get something approaching what I asked for. Any 5 year old in MS Paint could've done it in one try. Now extrapolate that into something more complex and you see the flaws in the technology pretty quick.
But when you point this out, AI shills just screech
        -you didn't do it right!
-you just don't understand how it works
        -you're just a luddite/seething artists
but they NEVER actually prove they can pass the test themselves. They'll get angry and start posting "detailed" landscapes or airbrushed anime girls, but they NEVER make something an anon asks for on demand. And here's why:

The outputs you see in these threads that guys like OP post are curated. They're edited in post, and are representative of the best 0.5% of the generations. Ignore the thousands of images in the garbage bin, because those damage the argument that the technology is game changing. Accepting a gauntlet that gets thrown down immediately destroys their argument because they can't pick the thing up.

If anything AI will be the death sentence of cartoons, cartoons exist in part, so people that suck at drawing can create some visual product, with AI there is no need to create an inferior visual style to compensate for lack of talent, since it will be the machine creating the art, so people will demand only the best visuals from AI.

Isn't it a bit weird that despite this technology rapidly improving we haven't seen a flood of comics? Yes people have made comics with it but that was the intial hype wave, I feel the copyright laws kind of killed the will power since you don't technically own the generated pictures. Seriously I was atleast expecting more ai like shit posting but people only want to generate porn or pretty pictures.

      Anonymous

The issue is AI is terrible at consistency, making a comic with AI would be a tedious process if you want it to artistically flow.

        Anonymous

Yes, it also limits what you can do, people who attempt AI comics are forced to go along with the output they receive and try and build around it. At that point you're hardly even making what you want, you're just taking the random slop you're given and trying to impose meaning on to it, you're an editor for a computer. Even more consistent AIs would have the same problem.

        Anonymous

Yeah, as a proompter it's kind of crazy people think it could take over traditional animation, I mean just look at how autistic shows like the simpsons have to be about staying on model and compare it to just trying prompt one decent image with an AI, you could never stay on model.

Not him, but that stuff works kind of well. You will still need to do multiple gens as they'll all probably have small issues. You also can't really use a generic model for it, the model needs to match what the character looks like, or it's going to put Marge Simpson's hair over the gneeric base model's hairshape.

Why do morons still believe this to be a possibility?
Entertainment industry had become so saturated that putting AI shit into the mix will only make indie creators LESS likely to be noticed - especially given the fact that, through generators relying on largely the same source material for learning purposes, such indie works will become more and more samey.

And that is before getting to the issue with being able to copyright such a cartoon.

  32. 11 months ago

AI art isn't going to replace "the creative spark" at the core of big projects like TV shows and video games. But it's going to take a lot of less glamorous jobs. Shit like designing "The Grubhub cartoon people" or doing brochure art for "The Cologuard Poop-In-A-Bucket Cancer Screening Mascot" or yes "draw my waifu in a sailor suit" may not be glamorous, but it paid the bills. Doing grunt work like coming up with art for a food truck put food on the table. That's the sort of work that let people pursue a career in art and keep a roof over their heads. And THAT'S the work AIs will take.

With that work gone, the only people who will be able to stick around and pursue a career in art are going to be motherfrickers that don't need shitty-but-it-pays gigs. The guys that never NEEDED to come up with art to slap on a food truck. Independently wealthy people. Rich kids living off their parents' largesse. If you don't have mommy and daddy's money to keep you afloat, you're fricked if you try to become an artist.
AI isn't going to usher in a renaissance, it's going to put our art and culture even more in the hands of shitty shitty rich people.

Established artist with large following here. You are fine if you are an established artist with a large following, you're even better off if you have "ideas". Most people don't have ideas, AI people certainly don't. If you are in my situation, you are fine. If you are not already a popular artist you need to establish yourself immediately before the real AI glut starts, you are already after losing avenues like deviantart to build an audience. Twitter is still fine, idk about places like instagram I hardly understand them. Do whatever you can to make a name for yourself, find something unique that you offer, and do it without delay. If you are an animator you are totally fine (for now), but please work as if you may not be fine in the near future. If you're just a mid-to-low popularity guy trying to get by by doing nsfw or fetish commissions, you need to be really worried. Figure out a plan, immediately. I'm sorry things worked out this way.
