first off, I'm a huge Miyazaki/Ghibli fan. have been since my introduction to them back in the mid '90s.
This movie was easily his worst. the visuals and music were 10/10 per normal, but the story... didn't exist. It was just shit happening. I mean, you could almost say the same about Kiki or Spirited Away, but at least those had an end goal. This just wandered along. It felt like watching Miyazaki dream, and not in a good way.
I had the same feeling about Kiki and Ponyo.
Never saw Ponyo but Kiki had a point, they just didn’t have the balls to give it the ending they set up where Kiki’s powers don’t come back and she has to save the day using her friends very obviously set up to save the day, broom-like bike-plane.

Can someone explain why Spirited Away was great but The Boy and the Heron was bad?
I don't like either film, but they seem pretty much the same to me. Same characters, same conflict, nonsensical plot, deus ex machina, same music. Why is one worshiped but not the other?
Pacing and charm. Boy and The Heron doesn’t pick up until the titular characters actually meet, which is a solid half way through the film. Also, the side characters aren’t completely lost in their own pretension.
Spirited Away had a clear goal: rescue parents, gtfo. we also saw Chihiro/Sen grow and strengthen throughout her time in the bathhouse.
Boy and the Heron just sorta happened. Dude follows a bird into an abandoned building because something needed to happen. Then trippy, unrelated shit goes on, then he's trying to find his mom for honestly undefined reasons: is he trying to save her? is he trying to get closure? WHO KNOWS! Here, have Imperial Budgies.

His stories have become meandering unfocused messes ever since the success of Spirited Away.
He can't make a concise story anymore to save his life and just stacks it with myriad little cutesy slice of life moments that seem charming but no longer form a cohesive whole. It's not a bad approach by any means but it is one with diminishing returns, especially since these kind of movies can be 3 or 4 or 2 hours long or even one hour long. It's entirely scalable since he can always have MORE cutesy moments or less, no rhyme or reason to it other than a basic framework.
It also used to be that Ghibli stuff was contrasted with Disney's more concise storyelling, but now that Disney collapsed we're left with these Ghibli movies judged on their own merit and imho I find them lacking.
