Prequels got a lot of hate years before Plinkett, people constantly shat on the Phantom Menace, Jar Jar Binks, Midiclorians and other garbage Lucas came up with. The fans liked elements of the prequels, like Duel of the Fates or the fight between Anakin and Obi-Wan. But as a whole these movies were a huge disappointment.

That being said regardless of your opinion on the decisions Lucas made regarding his story you can't deny that he created art. The squeal films on the other hand are corporate slop.
It's literally just a generational thing. The people who get worked up about the prequels are just Gen Xers who grew up watching the OT and are biased from nostalgia. Similarly, the millenials who grew up with the prequels look back fondly on them. If you're honest with yourself you can admit a lot of the lazy writing and world building present in the prequels exists just as much in the OT too
