A lot of the backlash against this movie is just Letterboxd hipster who are afraid of sincerity. Everything has to be subtle and implied and exist on ten different layers of irony
The backlash about him being fat somehow surprised me. Their main mistake is that they think because a character belongs to a certain group (fat, gay, black, disabled, etc), that whatever that character does and says is a grand statement about that group. Sometimes it's just a person that happens to have a specific trait. It doesn't have to be treated with kid gloves just to paint obese people in a flattering light. He was a person with issues, just like all of us, fat or not. The end.
I liked the movie, but the part where he was cleaning up an image board for free was a bit too silly and unrealistic.
