This one needs a little more exaggeration to make the point. The first panel is off to a good start, but you could further into ridiculousness by having the hair coil around her legs of just trail off into the distance Rapunzel style. The second shouldn't be a normal haircut at all - maybe do the Charlie Brown thing and have one single squiggle of hair.

Problem is, the artist has fallen into the female comedian trap of "I want to insult myself for a punchline, but I dare not go too far or boys won't want to kiss me or sign up for my onlyfans anymore."

          Anonymous

This, it's the female desire to constantly vet all her quirks and faults to make sure they're presentable and curate the discussion surrounding her

If you let people form their own opinions about your flaws they might not be desirable
          >Oh becky she has small breasts haha it makes her look like some kinda ugly gremlin
Whereas if you hit them to the punch first and psyop "Oh becky has small breasts haha it's so cute and charming and girly", THAT'LL be the new narrative

What's the deal with some young men identifying with evil? It's weird but I can't quite point it out. It’s because the world is trying to decide what’s evil with these cartoon villains but it’s run by Satan. It’s cool to have unrepentant villains, but the truth is that evil can exist in the hearts of men everywhere and they’re sick of being brow beaten by others who are objectively worse.

It’s no good being an incel, but inceldom is a reaction to women fricking over the population, which in itself is a reaction to the population getting weaker and becoming more complacent in their sins.

Ok. But I’m still interested in discussing the philosophical implications of identifying with a villain.

It’s human to identify with one. A good story suggests why you shouldn’t but a great one still does and explains why the villain’s outlook was so attractive in the first place. Isn’t that right?

Say for example, Jack Horner. If you have the ability to get everything you want, why wouldn’t you? But at the same time the film implies you won’t be happy if you continue to indulge in your own greed.

Yes it is, it's very human, and this childish notion that "you like bad character? You must be bad person!" is unbelievably moronic yet unfortunately evident it the world

It gets weird at some point and you should stop pretending that it doesn't. It doesn't take some mass cultural subversion to notice that a lot of people use those characters to 'jokingly' shoehorn ides that don't stand on their own, only trough some semi-ironic 'literally me' meme.

I can't really think of anything worse than making your son witness you kill thousands of people for his 'sins'.
Most of your points stand but I can't understand watching a show made by Amazon, with the character cast reminiscent of a video game random character creation, the plot thickness of a puddle, and then identifying with the morally reprehensible antagonist as if he is somehow morally gray and the writers are "secret geniouses actually".

I'm not knowledgeable about Invincible or its fanbase, but usually how it goes with these things is that the characters take on a life of their own within the minds of the fans and they turn it into something more representative of themselves after having found things within the original work that resonate within them, but that requires these people to have functioning brains, and we all know that anybody who deviates too far from you specifically is a one dimensional cartoon character.

NTA, and not a celibate, but it's the same shit as armchair socialists from an outside perspective. A "system" in place has long-since abandoned those people, so naturally they want something where they have a chance at having an advantage over their guaranteed nothing. To the incels' credit though, they do somewhat have a point because of the porn industry and electronic dating turning relaionships into a disposable commodity for women. If a man cannot obtain a family from society, then wanting to serve society is worthless to him.

I think it's different where millennials have a "I hate my life type of humour cause the world is going to shit and we will never lead normal lives or buy houses" whereas boomers aren't self aware and blame everything on everyone else, when in reality it was their generation that fricked up the world.
So many boomers have this ability to never learn/grow from their experiences and still blame and act like they are children, just children who own houses and get stuck in their sad lives when they were given everything.
At least millenials are entitled to being fricked over, we have been given the shit end of the stick.

What these kinds of "relatable" comics made me realize is that there are entire networks of creators and audiences that are wildly successful and popular by all metrics and yet never cross over into what most people here seem to think of as "the industry." There are people out there catering to their own large audiences that never intersect with the interests here. It's a good reminder that places like here, Twitter, or even Reddit are nowhere near representative of normalgays and instead represent a smaller group with a higher level of internet brain rot.

Well there's not a lot to talk about with this one. He isn't even blaming anyone for the inflation, just saying it's there and it sucks. Which, i mean, it is and does.

The inflation line is running out of steam because even right leaning finance magazines are starting to say it's not just a mechanic of inflation, it's a product of prices going up across the board to ensure major corporations remain more profitable than the last quarter. It's an issue of reliance on stock prices. You can call it corporate greed because it is, but it's also our retirements being tied to 401Ks. That's not inflation, that's workers and consumers being increasingly burdered to keep the system afloat.

        Anonymous

Yeah the CPI has only gone up like 20-30% over the last 4 years but food prices have gone up ten times that. The target audience for newspaper opinion cartoons aren't going to know the difference though.

          Anonymous

It's not so much newspapers or their audiences, it's the fact that neolibs left right and center believe the free market keeps prices low. And that can be true for a moment; a service gets streamlined and marketed to a wide audience as cheaper than what competitors provide and then once they have foothold and competition is on its way out, they increase prices. It's actually easier to understand increase prices as a product of a want or increased profit than it is to comprehend inflation, we're just propagandized and fed news that discourages that thinking.

Why not? It's the same thing as "what's the deal with airline food?". It's the same as the comics people post on Cinemaphile where the punchline is "jews are evil" or "Black person love watermelon". The joke in all cases is "LOL, I relate to this. I feel validated as a member of this target audience."

      Anonymous

      >It's the same as the comics people post on Cinemaphile where the punchline is
No it's not the same because the comic in the OP literally does not have a punchline. Please explain the fricking punchline of that comic if I'm wrong then.

        Anonymous

Neither do my other examples by reasonable standards. Note that even good comedy doesn't always require a punchline. In both the comics I'm talking about, though, the "humour" comes from recognition that the author agrees with you, confirmation that you share certain experiences and values with a group. It's more psychologically akin to laughing in relief than to the bait-and-switch of a classical punchline. Another place you see it a lot is when children bully each other: calling someone names for looking or acting different isn't funny per se, but picking on the loser kids IS funny, not because kids are sadists but because it reaffirms their place with the in-crowd. Oh-so-relatable comics are the more benign flip side of the same phenomenon.

It isn't, though. When the urge gets bad enough, people will have sex with anything no matter how ugly it is. And even if you, personally, assert that you wouldn't, there are a thousand other men that would.

I think it's more like they like feeling like they're part of something because they can't openly support ideas bases on their aggrevied homicidal memes. Chudjacks are based off the El Paso mall shooter who went there to kill brown people. There is no proper way to support that, so they can only post in memes with just enough irony to provide deniability to everyone, even themselves, as they would like to think what they post and think rightfully alienates them and dooms them to loneliness.

It's like they're activists trying to be nihilists. They want the feeling of engagement and opposition without the responsibility of research and argumentation. It's all feelings because research and argumentation are against them. Even if they find something they honestly see as good evidence, the next step is to publicly advocate. Given that they're obsessed with killing trannies and goblinos and post themselves as a chud mass shooter, they would never want to speak honestly about what they want. So they need to hide behind the irony and absurdity, saying it all while retaining deniability and avoiding even defending their ideas anonymously.

What makes these "relatable" comics fail for me is that they fail to sell the illusion that the character is actually alive. For me to relate to a character, I have to believe that they have a full life, and that's hard to convey with two-to-four panel gag-a-day strips.

      Anonymous

The frick are you talking about? You've misunderstood even the basics of a memoir which I need to assume you're thinking these short comics are supposed to he. Holy shit, this site makes you moronic.

Until you actually explain how I'm wrong, this is just you calling me moronic for not liking a genre of comic strips.

          Anonymous

I'm calling you moronic for not understanding the concept of the genre. If the comic is about pushing when the door says pull, it doesn't matter how real or living the characters are. They can be skeletons or squares, looking like a moron by failing to notice instructions happens and you don't need fully fleshed out and realized characters from a long running series to do that. You don't even need four panels. You can take as many or as few as you want, the relatable feeling and vicarious embarrassment is still there.

            Anonymous

I understand it, I just don't like them. They're relatable in the sense that some of the things that they go through are things that I go through, but the characters themselves are hard to connect to because they're not fully formed characters. A more advanced comic series can have these "relatable moments" sprinkled in while having developed believable characters, which I think does the job much better.
            >But these people don't care about artistic ambition, they just want to make tweets in drawn form.
Ok, I can't stop them from doing that, but I don't have to respect them as artists. I don't know why they'd need my approval anyway when they have thousands of fans who do like them.

The fact that a skeleton or a square could frick up opening a door doesn't need further background, the fact that absurd things also do something we do is more meaningful than a long narrative where someone fricks up the door.

I get it, if the intelligence of the character is more understood by the reader, the fact that they don't open the door correctly could be funnier. But then snarky anons say you spent 10 panels telling a joke that could be done in two.

              >they fail to sell the illusion that the character is actually alive.

Do I need to use the exact same wording to describe something every time I'm describing it in order for you to recognize that I'm describing the same thing? I assume that I don't and you're just being disingenuous.

                >"hey guys, look, you're not the only one in the world to frick up a door"
That's not what is being said or implied by these comics. It's not to feel more secure about it when it happens, it's that you already know it's something that happens and it figures that anywhere there are push and pull doors, it's going to happen.

You're not describing the same thing
                >A more advanced comic series can have these "relatable moments" sprinkled in while having developed believable characters, which I think does the job much better
                Is describing a different genre.

Also you're failing to understand how the more fleshed out and realized a character is, the less relatable they become. The same goes for the settling. That is unless the person in question happens to reflect you more specifically by happenstance.

We likely wouldn't be having this conversation, I wouldn't likely have been so angry, if you didn't initially call simple format comic abstraction a failing. It's like saying the walking sign guy fails to be effective as a sign because the design is simple and lifeless when the simplicity is functional and more life would distract from the point and be unnecessary. You're telling the sign would be better if you have a better understanding of stick guy and his motives.

This is kind of getting off topic, but I think that eliciting a sense of relief through solidarity is the intention of these artists and is a reason for the popularity of these comics.
                >>A more advanced comic series can have these "relatable moments" sprinkled in while having developed believable characters, which I think does the job much better
                >Is describing a different genre.
I know that, and I like that genre better.
                >Also you're failing to understand how the more fleshed out and realized a character is, the less relatable they become. The same goes for the settling. That is unless the person in question happens to reflect you more specifically by happenstance.
Maybe for some people, but for other people, a fleshed out character who has a lot of differences from them but some similarities is easier to connect to than a character who is barely defined but doesn't have any major differences.
                >We likely wouldn't be having this conversation, I wouldn't likely have been so angry, if you didn't initially call simple format comic abstraction a failing.
I outright said that they fail for me, explicitly telling you that this was about my personal taste and not representative of everyone's taste.
                >It's like saying the walking sign guy fails to be effective as a sign because the design is simple and lifeless when the simplicity is functional and more life would distract from the point and be unnecessary. The point of walking signs isn't to elicit an emotional reaction, and it isn't being passed off as a work of art, so nobody judges it as a work of art.

You described abstraction as a failure and put an expectation that is counter to what the genre is. It's not a failure because it was never a goal. You can say you don't like the genre as you're saying now, but initially you had framed the lack of scares and gory death in a romcom as a failure of those movies.

Also abstraction is what can make something more relatable, like the walking stick figure. The more detail and "life" something has, the less you can see yourself in them as they are their own separate things specifically meant to be them. That doesn't mean you can't relate to them, it's just harder as they have more factors for you to never be able to relate to.

                >For me to relate to a character, I have to believe that they have a full life,
This is just untrue. You can have a preference, you can call cartooning and comics shallow, but what you're saying relying not on taste but weird expectation for a medium and genre. Sometimes the goal is just to show you where you can walk. Sometimes it's quick little comics about a situation. Sometimes it's fully realized characters representing niche demographics that you may or may not relate to, but find interesting or entertaining all the same.

That might be the case, and I get that the context is "fails for me" and then goes into "fails to create the illusion of life". If there is a neurological issue here, it should be stated because this would be one so big it would need to be disclosed before opinions like these so there's a better understanding what's going on.

You can't get away with saying this when anybody can just scroll up and see that I said "fails for me" in my very first post, establishing from the very beginning that I was talking about my personal tastes.
                >Also abstraction is what can make something more relatable, like the walking stick figure. Once again, it depends on the person.

You're saying that I might have neurological issues for not relating to comics in the same way you do. I could accuse the same thing of you, or accuse you of having them due to your intolerance of differing viewpoints, or your gratuitous aggression.

Instead of saying that techno should have a woodwind section and the genre fails there for you, you should say you like classical with some synth.

As a peace offering: You should Read Azumanga Daioh. It's slice of life with little relatable moments. Or maybe you can't relate because they're Japanese high school girls. Either way, it's a series of short comics with characters who get the chance to be "full of life" individually.

Or just read any blobby slice of life American tumblr comic since it's the same characters over and over based off boring things the boring people do. They're real, living, mundane. Does get morenl full of life than that but I have a feeling you were somehow being contrarian to that. I don't know.
This one is good, it's a past history of the artist and things that happen to her, even unpleasant and gross stuff involving a boyfriend

Best time to do art, honestly

If, going with this analogy, the techno was made with the purpose of eliciting a specific emotional reaction within me and it didn't, but classical with some synth did succeed at eliciting that particular response, I don't think it's too unreasonable for me to say that the techno fails for me and then explain why the classical with synths doesn't. If I started telling other people that their emotional responses are invalid because they're different from mine, that would be unreasonable of me. I'll put your recommendations in my backlog.

That's fair, you were talking about an emotion, but the feeling of relating is accomplished by abstraction. If abstraction wasn't what you're needing and you were needing long form and "living" things, you would show an appreciation for the quirky slice of life comics.

I'm sorry for being an butthole, I just found that initial framing frustrating and hard to understand, not because I don't get that people can not like gag a day and perform long form comics, but that "full of life" isn't an apt descriptor and that you provided no examples.

So I'm sorry. If you're still following the thread, what do you like what fits within your tastes. Is it really just that problem genre?

What do you think if journal entries? A journal entry can be short and like one of these comics, but they are very relatable even when it's just "drank some water and it made me feel healthier than I actually am". It's even more relatable the less known the author is.

Unless this is some kind of inside joke its pretty damn bad. There's absolutely no point nor humor in it. the general quality of entertainment in the western-dominated world is piss poor and has been by design since the 1940s, I won't bore you with meaningless terms (or terms that have become meaningless by overuse from idiots who only repeat what they heard in an endless game of telephone from concrete idea to idiotic regurgitations) but the simple history is during the 1600s the King of England got scammed by early Ponzi schemers called the Virginia Company. This colonizing endeavor was a shit show, plagued with greedy oversight, they hired morons, pirates, idiots, drunks, and the famous. But, due to starvation and desperation, they also needed to hire 'real' workmen to do actual work, like carpentry or forging metal and these were the Polish, the Germans, the Finnish and many others which were less stupid, less destructively greedy, and less insane. Eventually, America became a strange back and forth between psychotic extremism and pragmatic utilitarianism that tried to make the budding nation a 'melting pot' of no distinct culture beyond a 'free economy of ideas'. So what is 'capitalism'? Started out as a confidence game, a scam, often on the rich, to promise infinite return but purposefully engineer failure so that more and more money is needed to fix it, the 'effort justification fallacy' that rules the world to this day.
If you're a slave you just run away. If you're a peasant or serf you abandon your loyalty to the lord first chance you see to make more from your life, but if you are allowed enough time to perfect your craft you will successively allow your labor to be sold for less and less money over time in desperation to be seen.
Learn a trade, that's a lot of time you spent and dedication to making something good, you want other people to show they appreciate it so you accept pittances and work for 'exposure' and you also begin to pander to their every idiotic request designed to make your work suck so they can undersell you more.

Hitler and Mussolini wrote big ass books calling what they were up to 'fascism' or 'national socialism' or what not, pages and pages of NONSENSE. In hindsight it's obvious from their actions they were looters, bandits, brigands, buttholes with rat line to Argentina. It doesn't matter they SAID they were trying to 'save' a nation and their people from imaginary threats, what they DID was rape, pillage, and act like your bog-standard warlords of any epoch.
Now think hard about 'capitalism' and realize it's the same. A lot of mindless drivel and arguments and principles and nonsensical 'trickle down' bullshit all trying to hide their actual goal: MLMs, scams, Ponzi schemes, the fricking Spanish Prisoner, these are soft racket confidence tricksters, they set up a summerhouse gambling establishment modeled after early French and Italian casinos and called it 'the stock market'. What they do is scam, it doesn't really matter what they call themselves or how they rationalize it. You buy the bullshit story and you get ripped off your whole fricking life or you don't and live free.

They truly have no idea about the depths of regret a childless 70-year-old feels, do they? You know that scene in LOTR where Theoden buries his son and barely contains completely breaking down? Imagine that but you don't have a shieldmaiden daughter and no happy memories from your kid's childhood to cling to (and a thought of afterlife with them).
I cannot imagine greater horror than seeing your body slowly fail with nobody left to care for you.
