Zahn wrote a short story poking fun at Luuke because the EU had soul and the authors were given mostly free reign to tell stories and they knew sometimes ideas didn't work. Meanwhile we're supposed to take RoS seriously as the finale of the main saga and they spent millions of dollars on it.

bro i grew up in the 90s in friend groups with tons of star wars nerds. if you were NOT into the expanded universe(the video games, the comics, novels, etc) you werent even considered "one of us", you were basically a normie. every single star wars video game and novel and comic that came out was always a best seller. the new york times best seller list always has 5+ star wars novels on it in any given month. the top selling games on every console included a star wars game or two or three.
star wars WAS the expanded universe in the 90s. the expanded universe is what built a lot of hype for the prequels and part of why the prequels outperformed disney's sequels - because the prequels came with an abundance of even more expanded universe content, opening up the 'forbidden era' of the timeline that took place immediately before the original film trilogy.

the old star wars continuity department actually dicated multiple tiers of canon with G canon being everything directly created by Lucas and then T canon were everything created directly for television(his cartoon shows - at the time). then there was C Continuity canon - the bulk ok the more modern expanded universe that was all editted and designed to fit together cohesively. 100s of books, 100s of comics, most of the video games, etcs. when most old star wars fans talk about "canon" this is the tier they are referring to, the largest and most continuous bulk.
then there is S canon, secondary which consists of the oldest comic books by marvel and some of the older novels before the continuity department was officialized. this also includes many of the video games that took some whackier liberties. and a few children's stories.
lastly there was the N canon, or non canon. which consisted of alternate universe stories like the Infinites comics and published/copyrighted fan fiction projects approved by lucasfilm.
G, T, and C canon are the "main canon", and are cohesive and have few if any conflicts. S and N canon were goofier stories.
disney changed it a single canon and dismissed everything besides G and T stories(george, and tv shows). then they rummaged through the old EU and picked out pieces here and there to fill the gaps in their horrible "original" stories.
the original star wars expanded universe canon was a major feat of modern day story telling, expanding every medium of modern art available(films, animation, video games, novels, comic books, etc) with a cohesive story told by 100s/1000s of creators. it was an impressive undertaking that took decades.
and disney discarded it because they thought they could do better.
Story group does not give a frick about doing their one job. Pablo Hidalgo hand waves away inconsistencies by saying it's unreliable narrators. Matt Martin says canon doesn't matter because people can just make their own canon.

Then, when he finished Mara his elation was so beautiful. The woman who trained him, his own aunt, kept him from killing those he was even closer to and he was genuinely thankful for it. Meanwhile, she saw him as an evil little shit who was probably going to kill her son and husband. Luke's following rage upon her then has him forcing Jaina to deal with Jacen... a horrible choice he felt devastated about.

bro i grew up in the 90s in friend groups with tons of star wars nerds. if you were NOT into the expanded universe(the video games, the comics, novels, etc) you werent even considered "one of us", you were basically a normie. every single star wars video game and novel and comic that came out was always a best seller. the new york times best seller list always has 5+ star wars novels on it in any given month. the top selling games on every console included a star wars game or two or three.
star wars WAS the expanded universe in the 90s. the expanded universe is what built a lot of hype for the prequels and part of why the prequels outperformed disney's sequels - because the prequels came with an abundance of even more expanded universe content, opening up the 'forbidden era' of the timeline that took place immediately before the original film trilogy.

the old star wars continuity department actually dicated multiple tiers of canon with G canon being everything directly created by Lucas and then T canon were everything created directly for television(his cartoon shows - at the time). then there was C Continuity canon - the bulk ok the more modern expanded universe that was all editted and designed to fit together cohesively. 100s of books, 100s of comics, most of the video games, etcs. when most old star wars fans talk about "canon" this is the tier they are referring to, the largest and most continuous bulk.
then there is S canon, secondary which consists of the oldest comic books by marvel and some of the older novels before the continuity department was officialized. this also includes many of the video games that took some whackier liberties. and a few children's stories.
lastly there was the N canon, or non canon. which consisted of alternate universe stories like the Infinites comics and published/copyrighted fan fiction projects approved by lucasfilm.
G, T, and C canon are the "main canon", and are cohesive and have few if any conflicts. S and N canon were goofier stories.
disney changed it a single canon and dismissed everything besides G and T stories(george, and tv shows). then they rummaged through the old EU and picked out pieces here and there to fill the gaps in their horrible "original" stories.

My only answer would be that George changes his mind all the time. Luke is an extension of himself and it seemed like all his future disdain from her originated here. I just find it odd because Lucas himself used to collect EU art at Skywalker Ranch and even commissioned a nude painting of Aayla Secura from one of her original artists.

A strength of Mara's character was her development from entitled Imperial agent to Jedi Master. She was so mad at Luke's earnestness but yet it's the thing that saved her.

It became fun after she reappeared in later books as an "Is she or Isn't she?" villain/ally in later books and Luke slowly won her over.

chewbacca's death and han solo's spiral into depression was fricking amazing. jacen's guilt over the death and the breakdown of his relationship with his father han.... then later on jaina's guilt over their little brother anakin's deaths..... Jacen's guilt over Mara.... those deaths were great plot points in the New Jedi Order/EU.

Exactly. Mara's death was set up so well with Jacen torn between who he had to kill to become a true Sith. Luke? Leia? Han? Ben? Tenel Ka? His Daughter? All were choices he was struggling to make. Then, when he finished Mara his elation was so beautiful. The woman who trained him, his own aunt, kept him from killing those he was even closer to and he was genuinely thankful for it. Meanwhile, she saw him as an evil little shit who was probably going to kill her son and husband. Luke's following rage upon her then has him forcing Jaina to deal with Jacen... a horrible choice he felt devastated about.

EU is interesting because it's more like a classical mythology system. Disjointed stories that connect loosely with each other and contradict each other / the source material, but it allowed for some weird and experimental stuff that was occasionally worthwhile

did you ever read the Thrawn Trilogy? remember the world of Myrkr? with Ysalamiri creatures that could create bubbles that conceal/block the force? well they did that because of force-sensitive predators on the planet Myrkr who hunted them called vornskr, which Talon Karrde kept as pets in the Thrown Trilogy novels. The creature in the image you see are Voxyn, genetically modified from the vornskr for their force-hunting abilities. the Voxyn were bred to hunt down jedi by the Yuuzhan Vong, an alien force that invaded the star wars galaxy decades after the fall of the empire. they've never had a real good/official design and have been depicted pretty differently. sometimes hairy, sometimes more dinosaur like, sometimes more wolf like. they were really only a part of the New Jedi Order book series.
