This is why we have 80 million batman movies and they keep rebooting spiderman with all the same set-piece beats. This is why we got five live-action transformers movies, two Gi Joe movies, and two live action TMNT movies. This is why we get remakes like Robocop or Star Trek's reboots. Even the state of Star Wars is just nostalgiapandering.
And you still watch it all regardless. You can't help but watch it and talk about it, even if you're not happy with it. This is why Star Wars stays relevant after TLJ, because people can't shut the frick up about it. The internet gives words even more power, because when people see other's talk about shit, their attention is now caught and curiosity is generated. Viral marketing isn't just a meme. This is why Morbius got put into theaters twice. The corporations are not reading the conversations, they're just seeing that the shit's being talked about. The more you let this shit be talked about, the more they'll think you want it.
I think it is more about low risk, guaranteed reward. The audience is already there they just have to deliver something that resembles a legit movie. Unless it is painfully bad people will show up.
