They're kind of shitty parents all things considered

>Hardly ever help Calvin with school
>Refuse to connect with Calvin on his level unless it's something they consider normal
>Make several backhanded comments to Calvin in his face, such as Calvin's dad telling him reproducing is overrated and how they wouldn't have paid for Calvin when he asks them if he's gifted
>His dad keeps fricking around with Calvin when the latter asks him genuine questions, making Calvin believe even more crazy shit and may have also contribute to Calvin's belief that boys are better than girls (his dad telling him men are better at abstract reasoning than women and asking him to tell his mom that)

I'm sorry a cartoon hit you on an emotional level and has left you traumatized. If you like I can link you to a bunch of discords with sensitive people such as yourself who would love to agree with you about how serious a newspaper comic should be taken.

I'm sorry I have given criticism on a comic strip and the messages and themes it presents the reader

Most of your criticism involves criticizing a punchline in a joke on the foundation f taking it seriously with a straight face

It's funny how angry Cinemaphile gets when someone tries to discuss anything beyond waifu shit.

see, this is a joke. Both a pun on gifted, and Calvin believing reporters will be interviewing Hobbes in the future.

You're choosing to take it as 100% serious because I guess you have some unresolved trauma over your parents being sarcastic sometimes.

How about you go ask your mom that as a six year old, get the same answer and see how you react. Calvin's a bratty kid, but the last thing she should have done is to just insult him to his face

Holy shit, yes we get it. Cartoons do and say things that real people wouldn't.
I'm sorry this is a hard concept for you to get around. Do you just have no suspension of disbelief or something?

You're naive if you think there aren't shitty parents who regularly tell their children how much of a frick up they are.

don't call him a nimrod, he'll probably get autistic about how that's actually a mythological figure that was turned into an insult by a Bugs Bunny joke, and that's bad because jokes don't exist

I do think such parents don't exist because you made this thread and someone clearly needed to tell you that you were fricking up somewhere along the lines.

Calvin is too young to need help with school and it's the sovereign right of a father to mess with his children when they are young enough that they'll forget by tomorrow.

His dad literally tries to help him with math once. That's all we see of his parents attempting to help him. They don't seem to care that he struggling in school - Calvin's mom even made an offer to Calvin to have him going to Summer School if she left her alone for three hours for three days per week of Summer break

Calvin is in like grade 1 he doesn't actually need help because none of the work he's doing matters beyond knowing how to count and write.

It's a three panel comic. What the frick more do you want?
Do you watch the Simpsons and think Homer actually tries to kill Bart when he chokes him as well?

          Anonymous

NTA but Homer choking Bart is obviously meant to be satirical, the very fact that narratively it's treated as a lighthearted joke is intentional commentary.

          Anonymous

No I don't, because that shit is clearly exaggerated, while Calvin and Hobbes is grounded in reality. Besides, The Simpsons show Homer and Marge (during the golden years at least) doing a better job at trying to raise Bart, Lisa and Maggie while still presenting them as people, unlike Calvin's parents

yes, we must examine the deep psychological implications of the daily gag comic strip

Please and kindly frick off with this reductionist take. Art is meant to be criticized. Plus, for the most part Calvin and Hobbes is very grounded in reality aside from his imaginary adventures.

I will not. They're "bad" parents because it's funny. There's no deeper implication of abuse or neglect here.

Imagine sending your kid to an art college and all he does is complain about the psychological damage of cartoon parents in the funnies pages of a newspaper.

In my personal opinion, I feel as though the strip lost a lot of heart once Bill came back from the first sebbatical. We never got stuff like the baby raccoon story or Calvin's house being robbed ever again, which really gave all the characters depth

You can criticize it all you want. Doesn't mean people need to agree or accept your criticism. Fun fact my friend, when people say "my two cents on the subject" that is what they mean. It means nothing to anyone.

You're right OP, but all the people who disagree with you will forever handwave it away as "it's just a comic" though, you're not going to get a deeper discussion on this or any other topic on the comic from its fanboys that isn't about how much they like it, they just love it too much
