The idea that there were a large number mutants who WANTED to be cured, due to deformities or powers that were dangerous or detrimental to their lives, it's something they've rarely dared talk about since Decimation because it doesn't fit the narrative that being a mutant is great. Occasionally you get someone who would want to be cured getting told to shut up and have more mutant pride by the 11/10 supermodel mutants with useful powers.

The only reason he's a 'superhero' is because Reed gave him that life as compensation for ruining his body and his chances at a normal life. Growing up a monster is what you were, how you're born.
