Wouldn't that technically make Ben's suffering worse, as he experienced life before being turned into the Thing, compared to the green turd thing who had nothing to compare their miserable existence to.
It's like comparing the level of suffering between a painter who suddenly became blind through an accident and someone who has been blind their entire life.

Ben wasn’t cast out into the wild and forced to act like a deer feeding off of poop and running away from hungry bears. People just sometimes called him ugly behind his back when he tries to date women

You're speaking from an outsider's perspective, but the mutie living out in the wild had nothing else to compare their life to. To them that's all there was.

I don't recall the page, but there's one where Reed says forming the FF and getting tons of fame and success as a superhero team was his way of trying to make up for turning his friends into freaks
Found it hilariously tone deaf because what happened to Ben is so horrific, yet Morlocks go through that shit and get nothing out of it. It's like if you had a white friend who turned black after a lab accident, and you claim the only way to make up for the suffering is to make him into a billionaire rapper

This argument is kind of weird, because for all its faults the movie plays this out well. Storm may not get an immediate and overt slapdown, but Rogue DOES take the cure later, after all, and the X-Men DO fight to defend it.

Odds are this line wouldn't exist if Halle Berry hadn't refused to be in the movie if she didn't get more lines, making it entirely likely that her obtuseness is an intentional frick you to her from the writers.

Have we seen any mutants with horrific deformities or whatever get cured lately? Surely there should be a bunch

        Anonymous

The idea that there were a large number mutants who WANTED to be cured, due to deformities or powers that were dangerous or detrimental to their lives, it's something they've rarely dared talk about since Decimation because it doesn't fit the narrative that being a mutant is great. Occasionally you get someone who would want to be cured getting told to shut up and have more mutant pride by the 11/10 supermodel mutants with useful powers.

          Anonymous

Shame. IIRC there was a recent issue where Orchis was offering the mutant cure and some hideous frog kid tried to get it, but changed his mind at the last second. You'd think there would be loads of mutants who didn't change their mind and we could see a bit from their POV, but unfortunately no
I can understand the idea of a "cure" being iffy since mutants are still seen somewhat as a metaphor for certain real life oppressed groups, but it's still crazy realistic

Ben had a life that was ripped away from him, he suffered more. The only reason he's a 'superhero' is because Reed gave him that life as compensation for ruining his body and his chances at a normal life. Growing up a monster is what you were, how you're born. It's unfair but that's life, suck it up. Ben had an accident and it fricked him up.

There is a huge difference between being born with no legs and that's just your lot, and having your legs ripped off and learning to come back from that and improving.

Also why the frick does it matter about the qualifications of Ben's romantic interests? You think that they're his property and his worth is reflected in their abilities? You can't be slamming him for being a guy and then slamming him for being dated by girls who can do shit. That's double standards you dumb frickin mutie. You were sewer slime that learned to talk, he was a man that was crippled. You're right about one thing though, false equivalencies do help no one, so quit spouting yours.

She suffered way more than that coddled gay Ben. She grew up on her own in the wilderness hunting to survive. Freezing in the elements. Starving looking for uncooked organs to scrape off of bones with her bare teeth. Dysentry and disease and predators. But boohoohoo big baby ben can’t get a chick to date him no mo’ (cept the chick he is currently dating).
He has no fricking idea what real suffering is like like what Mutants endure.
