It's possible the decision to delete the EU was mostly driven by arrogance and creative types' narcissism. However I think the real driving force behind it was just a penny-clever/pound-foolish business calculation that deleting the EU would make it easier to market to new demographics since all the old EU stuff was, in their eyes, written by and for nerdy white guys and therefore had limited appeal.

It's theoretically possible but requires too much cajoling. Not because of Talon even.
Ironically at the end of the EU Luke is already in the position Lucas wanted him to be in, essentially in a self-imposed exile trying to search the Force. But the biggest problem is trying to pull off his ideas surrounding the rest of the galaxy. Leia fighting corruption and reestablishing the New Republic was possible in the late EU setting, but to do it without bulldozing all of the EU would require a delicate touch and being extremely particular about details to the point that Lucas' own vision would have to be stifled in at least some regards. For example if he really really wanted to set it like ten years after RotJ, instead of later, then it's all fricked.
If George wanted to have fricking control over shit he should've just made more movies instead of sitting on his ass for 15 years and then again for 10 years before making any real moves with his franchise

Without that confluence of factors, first Jacen is never turned into a Sith, or even if he is Han or Leia are much more likely to die to be his big turning point, just like Kylo in the sequels.

Zahn's trilogy is fricking boring, holy shit. After all the hype I've seen for the past two decades I finally get around to it and my God, it's the most middling sci-fi I've ever read. Stale, repetitive prose, entirely derivative plotlines, lumbering action scenes (fricking awful), fumbled character arcs. It really has everything. I was almost into it, too: Heir was rather slow and plodding, but I figured as the first book in a trilogy that was fine enough. Well it turns out the other two are just as fricking boring. Zahn identifies incredibly interesting character arcs and then fricking vaporizes them in order to make his books facsimiles of Hollywood films. Star Wars literally revolutionized its medium; for the supposedly best EU works to be so derivative and pedestrian is inexcusable. Thrawn, too. Wow. Guy has his moments but he's a shining example of a super smart character written by an author who can't handle him. I'm still not sure how, exactly, he manages to discern a society's military strategy from its artwork, because Zahn asks the reader to take for granted that it even makes sense.
The EU is gay. I'll take the Katarn stuff, but everything else is whatever.

He literally gets assfricked by fricking Lando's mining equipment at the end of the first book and then is constantly getting shit on from then on. Filoni's Thrawn is several leagues worse but I'm not sure why anons pretend he was ever a particularly well-written character. His interactions with Pellaeon and C'baoth were great though and possibly the only highlight of the trilogy. That relationship triangle was severely underutilized.
