SpongeBob is overrated now because it started in 1999. The first 3 seasons were great. The movie came out after the 3rd season and season 4 dropped off hard. There were some good episodes here and there. It peaked at the movie. Season 4 dropped in quality, but had some good episodes. After that the only episode that was good was the 'Not Normal' one (Season 6, episode 4).
It was a good show, but it ran it's course and Spongebob became annoying after the movie. You just think it's overrated because it's been still going for almost 20 years after it should have ended.

MoBrosStudios and his consequences have not only been a disaster for public opinion, but for the animation industry as well. It's why cartoons as a whole (minus Spongebob) are now moral induced fluff just like how they were in the 80s.
