Watchmen did this shit decades ago

      Yes.

Watchmen did it well back in the mid 80s. Comics have been poorly ever since. Moore didn't want grim n gritty superheroes, he wanted more mature story telling. Instead we got cheap superficial knockoffs full of superfluous sex and violence.
Ever since Snyder did the shitty movie version, we've got capeshit in tv and film doing the same here.
All these postmodern deconstructions can do is tear things down. They revel in perversity and villainy. They shit on any concept of heroism.
Tearing down superheroes was supposed to be the exception, not the norm. When everything is tearing stuff down, it defeats the purpose of deconstructionism. The only way to deconstruct this modern trend is to reconstruct superheroes, but no one wants to buck the trend.

          >The only splatterfest in the book (the gang walking through New York post-squid) is turned into a nothing white flash, and all of the action scenes are turned into splatterfests
          >Giving the Watchmen slightly superhuman action hero strength instead of emphasizing the awkwardness
The story is mostly intact, but the execution completely fails to emphasize the strengths of the story in the same way the comics did

so close, but wrong. the way to overcoming deconstructionist post-modernity is to stop constructing things altogether, but the masses are too indoctrinated by fear to let go of the fairy tales— super or otherwise

First off you're moronic, so you should probably run blindfolded across a highway, or let yourself see to make it all the better. Secondly, the one on the left is a mockery of an albeit already terrible person of a character that was glowBlack personed into killing the same people who glowBlack personed him. Lastly, Omniman did nothing wrong. He isn't human, he had no real reason to care. Because you hold the mental equivalent of a slug, you are unable to break apart your reasoning from being a normal person and seeing the perspective of other living creatures. Funnily enough, Omniman could, but just didn't care due to the level of arrogance his Viltrumite heritage.

Homelander: He has no identity, never knew a true, selfless parental love and warmth, he's only revered by the masses for his abilities and how he's sold to them, not for who he truly is. Because of that he despises humans and envies them at the same time. He's a failed product, has no real purpose in life besides chasing popularity and that's only because corporation that spawned him tells him to do so. He could be the bringer of good and justice after freeing himself from the Vought's grasp, but the years of abuse, power tripping and so on made it impossible. He's unstable bag of issues and insecurities, a painted corpse, pretty face and fantasy of power revered by the public that will ultimately bring them doom. Also, there's a reason he's wearing strips and stars.

Omniman: He knows well who he is and what is life goal is. He's not evil, he's immoral, a natural born conqueror raised in the society of warriors. He let's his true nature to be dormant for a short while, but only to see if Mark is worthy and if he'll help him with the conquest of Earth. Everything he does makes sense, there's no impulsiveness, insecurities. When he confronts Mark at the end of the first season, first cracks in his character appear: his own flesh and blood has entirely different outlook on things. This is his only internal conflict we see.

How are they the same archetype? Because muh jawline and cape?

Except it wasn’t interesting for a while, hence the subversion characters. Superman isn’t any more interesting now just because that anti-hero concept is more prevalent than it used to be.

      Anonymous

I actually like Superman, but I know he can get boring when you know he will always do the right thing and that he is stronger than everything else. That is why him being Evil or Immoral is more interesting sometimes, because now the other characters that got tossed aside before have to react to this omnipotent being. It is such a good concept, that it is now overused and that will eventually get stale like Superman being Lawful Good and the strongest did. Superman will always be best when facing shit he can't overpower like the human spirit in Red Son, death in All-Star Superman, or his boundaries in Prime.

This is like when someone mentions child rapists on twitter and someone yells about antisemitism. Are you admitting that WASPs are demonic?

But Omni man is literally a super Sayan clone? He barely has anything in common with superman. He isn't a guy with superman powers, who has grown bored with being good, and does evil shit on the side. He is a soldier on a recon mission, doing his best to serve his country. That and he gets a major redemption arc in the comics, and becomes one of the leading good guys, and goes out as an emperor and a hero.

on the topic of his redemption arc, I wonder if they will be able to sell it. Episode 8 spent most of it's runtime showing him mass murder innocent people. In the comics, it was a few panels of collateral damage, while in the show, it's straight up sadism. Can the viewers really forgive him when he shows up in the next season?

Cartoon omnicidal maniac can never be redeemed as a hero.

Every anime ever has a edgy side character, who murdered people in cold blood, but because he has a sob story, the mc forgives him, and he joins the team as a full fledged good guy.

They did one thing right too. They made Cecil a badass, lovable and stand up guy. Everyone and their mother loves him now, even though his comicbook counterpart was dumber and more ''muh men in black agent bad''. I really don't want him to pull a big brain fart, when he and Mark get into a conflict. If they really have to, I hope it's better written, and a mutual falling out.

I guess introducing all the other Viltrumites as an even bigger threat, would make Omni man a ''either he is with us, or we are dead'' kind of character. But then they have to redeem those guys too. I guess the concept of love makes mass murderers into loving family people, will be pushed a lot.
