The way Tumblr artists imagined her becoming a good guy made her redemption look more organic and interesting
instead of the 180 in personality to a Zim expy in the show. Like she could've been like Jesper from Klaus. But no she has to be that sympathetic Saturday morning comic relief villain that's actually a wholesome good guy that's firmly in the comic relief role.
I think you're being too harsh on redeemed Peridot, her whole thing is that she was a drone for the diamonds who is now learning to like the Earth. Of course she's gonna be funny and quirky to show that she's truly redeemed but that doesn't make her a "smol zim baby" who's just a comic relief character at all

I don't like what gets off-screened either, but ignoring stuff like what made Peridot face turn given how impactful seeing a planet's weather patterns was, and how she interacted and developed with the same gems she was trying to massacre in late season 1 makes what she says to Yellow all the more impactful, even if they horribly background her for far too long.
It's more preferable over the unexplored thing with Lapis where she wishes she could get over her fears of the unknown to stand by the crystal gems, the only people she saw as friends, but she always was distant with them except for the rare team up that happens way too late and with no interactions between them.
At least with Jasper they didn't even tease anything beyond her relevancy to the plot to get worked up to (in the show, I know how crazy the Jasper shit was outside of it, but at some point we got to ignore the fact she basically had writing on the wall to suggest she was going to get developed in what was probably going to be a season 6 or 7 of SU but it never came due to ending at 5), but Lapis has this problem instead where she had something going but it's fricked up by what the show and certain writers did with her.
At least Peridot by comparison is fully realized.

I think this is what fricks me up about all these new cartoons. Everyone has to basically defect and surrender everything that made them interesting to the audience, because the writers of this shit can't conceive of any possible way to thwart a villain other than some big moronic speech, some phony suggestion the character only found "the true path" by conforming into yet another member of the hero's big moronic hugbox. The women in lead roles on this crap have no other frame of reference for problem-solving in real life other than being a better herd animal. Peridot couldn't stay her initial self and simply retain that while also learning to work with or merely tolerate the main cast. That would be too hard for bad writers, so she had to instead be sanded down gradually until she's gay compliant.

Something that consistently bugs me about Steven in both art and writing is that it very consistently seemed like the Crewniverse couldn't decide whether or not to portray him as 12 or 8.
Look at the pilot, he acts more like he's 12 there, there's a scene where he and Lars start trading insults and in true 12 year old fashion, once Steven's insults are validated by Sadie, he starts going all in with personal jabs while not appreciating the weight of what he's saying.
Then as the show progresses he feels toned back and starts acting younger than he is. Making things into games, accepting what adults tell him at face value, a heavy naivety regarding his own actions.
It's only really as the show goes off after he turns 13 that you see him act like a 12-14 range. Deliberately disobeying and learning to express a level of independence while not really having learned responsibility, getting angsty over little things, constantly on the lookout for when he's being treated like a kid and actively seeking to be a part of the more serious "adult" business.
It feels like the writers just don't remember their own tween years and treated child to teenager as some kind of light switch that flicks on at 13

Admittedly, it took some time for the show to find it's groove, but after that it had some nice episodes until it eventually grows weaker again.

and due to it being made relatively early during the show's actual run there are some noticeable difference with some of the characters mainly with the diamonds
I always like early fanbases the most. Not just because of the size, I noticed that 100% of my favorite fics are always from the early phases of a show, regardless of the franchise and even regardless of the type of media.
Maybe the writers themselves are to blame rather than the audience. Maybe the series just never live up to the hype they created and the old fans lose interest in the end and the new ones are attracted by the wacky mediocre end and headcanons of fans instead of the show as a whole or experiencing it as the early fans did.
I think that was the 2010s cartoon strategy in general: It's easier to keep hints vague and let the audience fill in the blanks with their own imaginations than actually tell a good story. It's a double edged sword that gets people interested early on, then disappointed when whatever the showrunners had in mind was way less interesting than they had imagined.
Anyone can come up with an interesting idea, but it's much harder to execute it well.

Ok a tl;dr about Steven Universe
The story takes place from the POV of Steven the son of the now dead leader of the crystal Gems. The great gem war happened way int he past and only the three Gems that take care of Steven are still alive. The way the story present them the Crystal Gems are a rebel group fighting the Gem empire for both the protection of Earth and freedom to from the oppressive system of the empire, all gems are made to serve a specific purpose like soldier, servant, etc and the Gems reveled against that class system.
However as the story progresses we see they didn't actually reveled at all, Rose (Steven mother) was basically a princess running away from home Princess Jasmine style, Pearl was Rose's servant she was just serving her master when she decided to become a rebel, Garnet had nowhere to go so she ended up with them, Amethyst was found by the others many years after the war in a baby like state so everything she knows she learned from the others so she isn't a rebel either.
In that context Peridot is the only one who really rebelled since she learned to appreciate the earth on her own accords and actually told her master to frick off when it was clear she wanted the planet destroyed.

I hate how popular infantilization and wacky subversion bullshit is these days. 40 years ago it was maybe surprising to reveal that your antagonist is actually a quirky meme nerd, nowadays it would be mindbaffling if they stayed the way they were when they got introduced.
What I like about early Peridot is that she didn't feel like the guy that is evil by herself, rather the cold but tired, adult slave worker of an oppressive regime which made her role fun to observe and strangely relatable. I neither wanted her to be outright evil nor to be a joke so it was bound to happen. You don't get balanced antagonists very often.
Villain redemptions often have that side effect.

The Cluster was so hilariously disappointing. All this build up for the cluster supposedly being powerful and destroying the world, just for it to be a fist for a few minutes and then fricking off
Damn this is a major smoking gun of the fact that we were, for whatever reasons you might care to guess at, robbed of a show that had at one point been planned to continue to lean into a more serious narrative as it went on. Of course much of the timeline as we know it was planned ahead of time, but a lot of that isn't strictly mutually exclusive with a more serious presentation of the story than what we got.
