Western animation could never achieve what Osamu Tezuka did

To be fair, Japan failed too.
Not as hard, but they still failed.

Because it's not adapting Tezuka's work. That's like saying an adaptation of Ultimate Spiderman is the same as making a show based on Ditko's work.

If Japan can get a second chance, then we can give it to the West as well.

I didn't want it to die. The teaser was so promising.

Not really. At least in animation Tezuka liked experimental stuff. Imagine how proud he would be of the existance of experimental looking series like sonny boy or the existance of indie anime.

Good example of this film's weak quality is how much it failed at having a memorable new villain and a memorable new female lead.

You'd think the writers would have these guys contribute to the final battle in some way, but no. Other than giving the name Astro to the robot Tobio, these guys are pointless. They might as well disappear from the film after their intro scene.

and the way they give him the name is so unimaginative. They are like "Tobio is not much of a name, you need something better", they give suggestions, and the red robot then comes up with Astro for no reason.

Another IP with source material that's impossible to frick up no matter how many times you retell it, unless you're a literal fricking moron. Shit like this is actually a literal moron test.
    >you fricked it up?

Even if the movie wasn't shit, I don't know that people in the west have any real affinity for Astro Boy. People barely remember Speed Racer because the cartoon was cheaply made and they talk funny, Astro Boy just seems like a relic of the past that's only enjoyed by actual boomers

I don't get why the filmmakers had Astro be installed with all of Tobio's memories. Nothing comes out of that decision. It's a pointless change from the source material. There was potential to do psychologically interesting stuff with it, but the writers never go there.

Because the idea of a "replacement son" was probably considered too much for stupid american children to process.

    >"I'm not fighting"/"I'm not doing this"
    >proceeds to destroy every single opponent afterwards

    >realizes that he cannot escape by flying because of a force shield, yet doesn't try any alternatives like burrowing underground (he digged through a mountain in a previous scene) or smashing through a wall
    Great writing
