Baffling how this film looks like it could've been made in the 80s. There's something so magical and otherworldly about some of its set designs. The rest is pure CGI dross.

I didn’t notice during the first watch, but when finds out riddick is still alive, he gets scared so shitless that he launches the armada early and dusts hundreds of his own people left on new mecca. Probably the only reason everyone was okay with vakko betraying him.

      Anonymous

      >Does he ever actually do a single morally questionable thing across three movies?
Morality never enters the question for him and as such his actions shouldn't and can't be judged by that criteria.
Riddick does only what he wants and never a thing more, and his wants are wholly dictated by two things: first and foremost, his drive to survive, and second, to protect the exceedingly few things in existence which he likes/respects, which is essentially limited to Fry, Jack/Kyra, Imam (his family and those in his care, by extension), and his alien dog, in the totality of the franchise, which a few stragglers. Every single choice and decision he makes is selfish, even when he risks his own well-being. He doesn't kill everyone he could, but he also kills people he doesn't necessarily need to. When he avenges Imam, it was cold-blooded, premeditated murder. Sure, the Necromonger deserved it but it wasn't out of any sense of justice or anything even approaching it. He was just pissed.
Any "good" that Riddick does is utterly and perfectly incidental. He's a man of tyrannical integrity but his codes are all, again, wholly absent of any sense of justice, right or wrong, etc.
      As someone else said,

      >He’s space Snake Plissken. He’s actually more just than the corrupt system, and that’s what makes him an outlaw - his utter contempt for “civilized” society.
This very much lines up. Riddick is an animal but one, as I said, of tyrannical integrity. His personal codes are just, but he is still a stone-cold killer with little regard for life, and statistically, zero regard for his entire species.

      > Be evil unpredictable murderer

That’s not really accurate. Caroline goes back to save him and ends up dying. His shitty life had made him believe that there really weren’t any good people. At all. In Caroline, he found one and it changed him. The man he’d been died on that planet. He’s still a far cry from an altruist, but he no longer believes that everyone he runs across is necessarily a complete piece of shit.

They're extremely unique in this day and age, especially being space opera science fantasy stuff. Sadly the closest approximation, and this is by a WIDE margin, is John Carter. You have to go back to some 80s fantasy and sci-fi for more.

You're looking at it through the wrong lens. Yeah, he does good guy big bro stuff when it suits him. It isn't that he doesn't do heroic things. He also brutally slaughters dozens/hundreds of people. We see him do this. The problem is, you abstract it away as just "that's what movie heroes do, they kill da bad guys" and aren't bothered by it, but everyone else in his universe is like "jesus christ you just killed someone by cutting off his head with a knife".

Makes sense when you view it through the eyes of the characters, but zoomers can't do that.

Chronicles is such a weird movie. Because like, all its concepts/aesthetic feel ripped from other places in sci-fi. And the heavy sci fi aspects begin to feel weird when compared to the grounded feeling of Pitch Black. Watching them back to back has a lot of whiplash. I mean they have Elementals with Judi Dench? Almost feels like Vin got some weird input there.

Hello zoomzoom. This will be a difficult concept for you to understand, but back in "the day" there really was differentiation between human personalities and it meant something significant when a person engaged in certain non-mainstream, niche activities. Nowadays everything is so homogenized that the meaning is lost; D&D, for instance, is no longer a semi-underground cult fandom, it's just another major prostituted-out megacorp-owned IP, so it's understandable that you might have difficulty seeing the significance when Vin Diesel admitted to being a D&D player pre-homogenization.

tldr the world once wasn't so cynical as you see everything now

Man it is a shame that this franchise went no where. What would you have done differently to fix it? Chronicles flopped.

      Anonymous

The only thing you could have done to make it not "flop" would have been to make it not a movie worth talking about and remembering. The world isn't kind to space opera, outside of one particular fat bloated corpse that overfills the niche. You either make the movie you want to see exist, or you make the bland accessible version to satisfy the investors. It's a recurring creative dilemma. Every once in a while someone takes the shot and makes something that can be intensely enjoyed by a core niche audience, at the expense of the general audiences.

Well, Pitch Black was a weird starting point to begin with and then there's the awkward mix of Cyberpunk narratives and aesthetic within a pure sci-fi setting, which isn't helped by Riddick being presented as someone we should already know despite him being quite different than in Pitch Black AND him being pretty mysterious in Pitch Black to begin with.
Also killing his morality pet was a shit idea.

      Anonymous

The games were great, fixed his morality problem by turning him into frank castle in space. Riddick only works in that kind of setting, not a space adventurer. He needs to be at the very bottom of cast list while everyone else carries the movie. The movies have kino casting the problem is vin taking up all the fricking screen time.

I played Butcher Bay on original Xbox and it was fricking fantastic, loved that game. It was later replaced/superceded by Dark Athena, which is the "same game" with added content, but I've heard unsubstantiated rumors of people grumbling that it's not as good as the original. Don't know why or if it's true. But Dark Athena is way easier to get and play now.

So many other tie in games at the time were bad. Apparently Vin was involved in the production of these Riddick ones.

But then he also did this game which was going to have a movie but then the movie never happened.

Never played that, but Escape from Butcher Bay has long been referred to as a game that had no business being as good as it was, and "the only good movie license game".

It's still great, I replay through it every once in awhile. The hard shadows lighting holds up really well for the most part, combat is fluid and fun. I'm honestly surprised they didn't make more of them, but two is good. There aren't a lot of good prison focused games, Callisto Protocol got me excited about it and then the actual prison part or even prison looking levels is like the first 30 minutes.

At first you think its shit, then you're shanking Black folk in the dark. And once you get your eye hack abilities it goes from average to kino. I have no idea how they made such kino from vin's dogshit. The only bad part is vins voice acting, but its good though he rarely speaks. The developers knew exactly what they were doing Riddick is literally the bottom of the cast list and the kino voice actors carry the game x-zibit steals the show as a prison officer.

Pitch Black was so kino. The other Riddick movies, albeit good, didn't really capture the same atmosphere as the first one. The kind of late 90s-early 2000s b-tier shlock that's actually a gem in disguise. TCoR was basically fantasy and the 2013 film was a sort of blend in of the two.

  55. 7 months ago

I think I read while consuming some clickbait slop that the first movie wasn't supposed to be a part of the story of Riddick by the creator or something, which would explain why his character changed and why they needed to retell pitch black except with water monsters with the Chronicles Hero Riddick. I know Big Johns references little Johns but I don't think that's directly states anything beyond Riddick killing him. I could be a gay moron misremembering though so who knows.

The first movie was a low budget Aussie sci fi movie. The company that made it merged with universal.

Vin diesel got in with people because fast and furious was blowing up. He is a big nerd too. So they decided to try and make it a franchise. So you got a movie, games, animated show. Chronicles became a big space opera epic.

But it flopped. But vin has continued to push for it as a passion project hence why we got the third one and possibly a fourth.

Really was an attempt to create a franchise.
