I used to like Solondz movies, but then I eventually realized it's just a few making endless movies about how everyone in the suburbs is dysfunctional, a pedophile, a sexual deviant, a moron, or all of the above.
That leaves me with a bad taste. Makes you wonder what goes on in his miserable head.

Watch the other Solondz movies, especially Storytelling. Larry Clark movies (Kids, Ken Park, Bully). Rick Alverson is a newer director who reminds me of Solondz, though a bit more surreal, his films The Comedy and Entertainment are both great (trigger warning Tim Heidecker). Some other random recs: I'm Still Here, Spun, Schizopolis, Enter The Void, Joe (1970), Crash (1996), Fritz The Cat, Irreversible, Breaking the Waves, Straw Dogs, Santa Sangre, The Last House on the Left (1972)

also Precious by Lee Daniels, even though it ends up being Black virtue signaling there are a lot of over the top harsh moments reminiscent of Happiness

Also, frick it, if you're willing to watch all out gore watch some Marian Dora films. Carcinoma is his best imo, Cannibal is also good and based on a true story, Melancholie Der Engel is his claim to fame. Unfortunately his other films are hard to find, but I've heard Debris Documentar and Voyage to Agatis are also good.

why Fritz? Bakshi movies are comfy af

Much like Happiness it's satire targeting affluent white liberals. It's also pretty dark, don't you remember Harlem being bombed? The gang rape scene? The part where Fritz is radicalized into a nazi?

Is this actually kino? It seems to piss off Cinemaphile badly

      Anonymous

I'd say it's kino. It goes for a very specific feeling of fricked up and succeeds. Now, do you actually need to see a movie where every character is a pervert who gradually destroys their lives with pedophilia, cheating, inceldom, etc? Many people don't think so, and I can't convince them otherwise. But even if it's hard to find a message or morally redeemable qualities in the movie, I find it worth watching just for being a movie that dives into bleakness unapologetically as if it just wants to see how you'll react.

the first half of "beau is afraid" is great. it's this absurd hellscape but at the same time it's hard to point out anything and say "yeah bit things aren't really like that". there really is violence and depravity in the streets, there really are apartments that are falling to bits, antagonistic neighbors, people looking to rob you the instant they get the chance, and so on. it's just a shame the second half was also in the movie. protip to any aspiring film makers in the thread: leave out the giant penis monster.
