It would make more sense if the scene was shot as more of a memory than a 1:1 flashback. But that would take imagination. Disney has the tech to de-age they just don’t give a frick.

Samuel Jackson in cap marvel was good. Luke was passable but he also a lot older. People are already posting their own fan de aged edits and it looks better. Disney doesn’t care and neither should the fans. It’s clear they don’t respect the older characters and want to push their new agenda characters first.

People shit on Rian Johnson but JJ Abrams literally wrote Luke as being in self exile for decades, being hated by his nephew, not being in contact with Han or Leia, having had every member of his academy dead besides Kylo, being in the middle of nowhere while tens of billions died from the faction that his own pupil helped being to power
All of that is JJ Abrams if you paid attention to TFA

The only thing that Rian Johnson did to try and explain things is make it so that Luke basically got the kinda terrible visions that Anakin got in AotC and RotS that turned him to kill children, all the Jedi and, ironically, his wife he hoped to save.
But instead of fully succumbing to the horrible visions that had Luke see literal images of billions die and the people he loved being destroyed, Luke partially succumbed:
He acted on an urge to prevent it all by walking to Ben's tent, by igniting his lightsaber in a moment of weakness where he seriously contemplated murder like Anakin had
But then he resisted his urges by placing the lightsaber down but by then it was too late and his failure was already set in stone.
His self exile was a response to realizing how his actions directly contributed to one of the first steps of his vision and it was an attempt to prevent things from gerting worse through his actions.
His self sacrifice at the end was him escaping this mindset after being made to confront reality.

You could maybe convincingly argue that Rian Johnson should had done this better but the constant argument that he shouldn't had done it all ignores the place that JJ Abrams put the character in.
There's almost nowhere to go but failure and redemption given what Abrams wrote for Luke.

Yeah, but the next movie could have revealed that it was all for a reason, that Luke was actually doing something to stop Ben and Snoke. Communing with the Force and supercharging his abilities, maybe the planet was the location of some ancient Jedi temple and he was doing research, etc. and that he couldn't be around others to get it done. Rian was the one who decided that the reason Luke had been gone was that he was a loser who considered killing his nephew in his sleep.

            Anonymous

This would be odd primarily because there isn't much room for him to be anything but the one who either did something to help lead to Ben's turn to the dark side or failed to do something to prevent it
Your alternative kinda gives him a free pass from that.
You don't have to stick with Rian's choices, but JJ did write Luke as being some way responsible for Kylo Ren.
Obi Wan and Yoda, Jedi in almost identical situations as JJ wrote for Luke, are written by Lucas as being in exile and withered, not supercharged demigods who become far stronger from drastic failure.

              >You don't have to stick with Rian's choices, but JJ did write Luke as being some way responsible for Kylo Ren.
Not necessarily. I dunno, maybe Luke had something Ben/Snoke needed and he was trying to keep it safe and undetected. I realize there's only so much they can do with what JJ set up in Force Awakens, but there were other things to do aside from what Rian did.
              >Your alternative kinda gives him a free pass from that.
Not really, it just means Luke would've been DOING SOMETHING in response to Ben's turn to the Dark Side instead of "Oops, I fricked up, I better let the entire rest of the universe clean up my mess."
