This is an underrated Friday the 13th film.

This is an underrated Friday the 13th film. It gets a lot of shit since Jason isn't in it, and I do think that the VI was correct to retcon this movie to take the series in a different direction, but it's still an enjoyable slasher flick. It's unique as well, since instead of killing normalgays, "Jason" kills a bunch of autists and morons instead. And it has this scene

One interesting thing to note is the ending, in which Tommy hallucinates Jason passing the torch, so to speak, and he puts on the mask and becomes the third Jason. You can see this repeat more literally in IX in which Jason's soul can possess people after he dies.

Part IV, V and VI are my favorite Friday the 13th movies.
I don't care for the others.
V in particular has the best breasts in the franchise so it's always been dear to me.

It was directed by a porn guy. Explains the breasts and some of the POV cinematography.

I actually think Part 5 works great as a bridge between Jason's death and resurrection.
It wouldn't have been as memorable otherwise if he just came back in the very next film.
Also, it's just entertaining in general

It also cemented Tommy as having schizo premonitions about Jason and sets up his reasoning for "killing him" permanently in Part 6. He just royally fricked it up, but that was to be expected as a twist in these movies.

Also 5 ends with Tommy taking up the Jason mantle like the killer did, which also doesn't fit.

          Anonymous

It doesn't, until you look at it from this angle
Part 4 definitely left the door open for a Tommy killer angle, but the producers probably pussied out because Jason was more popular.

            Anonymous

            this angle* pardon

            >5 says that Jason was cremated for example
It's been a while since I've seen them. Did Tommy say this or was it explained in some other way?
Because Tommy himself can't really be trusted on anything at that point. You could practically retcon all the movies from part 5 onwards to have been in Tommy's head, or him being the real killer, which would also explain how Jason didn't magically resurrect but was just a tough bastard to kill.
Not that I'm opposed to zombie Jason, but the only real continuity kept in these movies is the Axe mark on his mask.

How come this gets shit on so much for having a fake Jason when New Nightmare does the exact same shit with Freddy?

Freddy in NN was still the same one, just in the "real world". Portrayed by the same actor too, so people gave it a pass. But I was never a fan of the meta gimmick.

I agree that as a part of the series it gives a nice gap before Jason turns into immortal zombie man, but 6 does ignore 5 completely. 5 says that Jason was cremated for example, and traumatized Tommy from 5 is simply not the same character as cool guy Tommy in 6.

          >It's been a while since I've seen them. Did Tommy say this or was it explained in some other way?
The town mayor says it when the sheriff says that Jason Voorhees is the killer.
          >or [Tommy] being the real killer
I don't think that's possible given the bullshit Jason does in the later movies. Take just this scene in 6 for example

This is after Jason gets shot multiple times with a shotgun also. A normal human couldn't be strong enough to kill someone that way.

IIRC, they explained in some offshoot comic that the cremation thing was a myth spread to calm the townsfolk.

I hate to keep arguing about it but in VI there's a literal tombstone in Crystal Lake that says Jason Voorhees on it. Frankly it's more bizarre that this would be there, that they would actually put him in a coffin and bury him with a tombstone, than just cremating him and dumping the ashes in the trashcan.

              ?t=138

The Sheriff asked Cobb if he was sure Jason was cremated which means he was probably bullshitting him anyway.

The moves simply don't add up, man. It's not like they even have to.

Long story short: They planned on Tommy being the new killer but gave up on that idea after part 5 received backlash.
I would've been ok with that angle but zombie Jason also ended up working. He was supposed to die several times by part 4 alone, so his durability made more sense that way.

                Anonymous

Tommy and Jason are the only consistent parts of F13. He even came back in a fan film so even if Hollywood never makes another sequel again I'm content with knowing he survived and probably put an end to Jason eventually.

I like 6 simply for the fact that it rehabilitates his character and makes him relatively normal instead of being as fricked up as he is in 5.

When he dies you can see a mask ripped open showing his face. Obviously the movie wants to make you think it's Tommy, since Tommy can make masks. But where did Roy get his? Who knows.

Thats why I don't understand people whining that Jason isn't the killer in 5
For all intents and purposes he is, the stunt guy is clearly just playing Jason, and the way they shoot him is how they shoot Jason
He effectively isn't Roy until he's dead and unmasked

Fair points. It's probably best not to dig too deep into it, but it's fun nonetheless. One thing I love about 5 is how unhinged Tommy is. The way he goes ballistic on the guy at breakfast came out of nowhere.

                >out of nowhere
The guy throws one of Tommy's masks into his chest and punches/nudges him about 3-4 times before Tommy snaps

out of nowhere might have been a stretch, but his retaliation takes it to another level. Chalk it up to troubled youth not knowing boundaries. It was fun to see how far Tommy escalated things.

              Anonymous

One thing they could have done is have him only adopt the Jason persona later since it doesn't even show him in the mask for a long time into the movie. Maybe he finds the mask and shit in Tommy's room and takes it (perhaps something he made for therapeutic purposes). You could film that in a way to not spoil his identity.

                Anonymous

But then again the movie is kind of playing with you in a different way since you don't know if it's actually Jason somehow, or if it's Tommy, and the real answer is something different. So I guess they just decided not to worry about details like that.

Part 5 also is the center piece to a nearly center era of the franchise. You have the golden era of 1-4, the Tommy era of 4-6, and then the gimmick era of 6+ up to the remake. The overlap of the Tommy stuff blends in nicely and sets up the first 8 films to be very easy to rewatch and enjoy. 9 is easily the weakest of them all, but worth a rewatch every now and then just as reminder. X is far more fun and better than the original reception. Falls in nicely with 6-8 as having some sort of campy gimmick added to the formula. FVJ is fun but is far more of a Freddy movie. The remake is very solid and respects what made the pre zombie Jason movies great. Overall I'd say 2 is my favorite for multiple reasons. Great final girl, solid kills, and sets up many of the traditional tropes nicely. Bonus points for Terry.

I've always thought 2 was underrated. Probably the creepiest of them all.
But if a person can watch only one F13 movie, I usually tell them to see Part 4, because it gives you a brief recap of all the events and contains pretty much all the elements of a Friday movie.
Remake was alright. Rambo Jason was a bit of a departure but there's some good kills in it, and the breasts were nice.

        Anonymous

Yeah, 4 is definitely the best intro for someone new if they aren't going to commit to starting from the beginning. 6 would be a decent second but it's tone is also unique in some regards. Remake Jason was definitely a mix of OG Jason and zombie, so it's a mixed bag.
