it's pretty crazy that it got made, and it's interesting how they got away with the premise by couching it in that frankenstein aesthetic early on. killing of a sacred deer is a much better film though. most of yorgos' work is kino because it's pure sublimated autism that forces the audience to be wholesale uncomfortable witnessing a familiar environment where no one functions as expected, vs. leveraging one character's turboautism against a series of strawmen that represent a repressive society. it's the first time i could say that a yorgos movie feels weird for the sake of being weird, instead of making a point that couldn't be made otherwise through his lens.

you haven't understand it entirely, this is not just a "feminist " movie, this is a depiction of a human life, that happens to be a woman in a world there there's a patriarchy, the movie also does this, it literally builds an entire world around a character. this kind of hasn't been done before, maybe since Barry Lyndon

yes that's why i said earlier in the thread that the movie was not yorgos' best. it has nothing interesting to say, it's only notable for how weird / edgy it's willing to be to accomplish its moronic politics. but the premise of a baby's brain being put into a woman's body that ultimately becomes a prostitute is a hard sell to produce no matter how you cut it.

yeah that's why emma stone's character is constantly put in sexual positions where she questions why that society has puritanical reactions to something she sees as normal. there's certainly no repeated commentary being made, especially when she finds out that poor babies dead bodies are being piled into a firepit in a slum. there's certainly not an entire section discussing the philosophies of cynicism and existing within a system that seems intent on beating down its subjects. no political points to be read whatsoever. but yeah, i didn't see the movie either lol.

her sexual orientation and how much she enjoys one thing vs. another is irrelevant. her character wouldn’t give a shit to begin because she is functionally an alien w no concept of the social norms that are ingrained in us regardless of how we feel about them. the conversation was mainly about the movie not having political themes, which is an insane claim to make.

So, I'm not the anon who tried to argue the movie was not political. But it's only political in as much as everything is.
The first time socialism is mentioned in the movie, it's to dismiss it as just another illusory form of idealism. The movie doesn't show what "socialism" means, or that it has a positive impact on anything (*that* would make it more directly and bluntly political).

                >the plot revolves around a woman with a child's brain getting railed
It's the plot, but it's not how it's played.
She doesn't behave like a child in a woman's body, she behaves like an autistic moron who progressively stops being moronic (but stays autistic).
In her behaviour she's very reminiscent of the character of Adam, in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.
It's still uncomfortable that her tardiness makes her an easy sexual prey for some of the characters, but that's part of the point.

                Anonymous

She's actually not an easy prey at all, even though some characters like Duncan assume she would be. Her autism and fearlessness make her almost impossible to intimidate, which in turn means nobody can really control her. As we see, Godwin was completely right when he let her run away with Duncan, figuring that she can take care of herself. She really can.

If anything, there is a dimension of its conceptions paling to this ambition: it verbalizes expropriation while its narrative culmination regards solely individual actualization. The protagonist exclaims her autonomy as a subject guided by her desire to behave sexually. However, discoveries direct her towards conciliation with her pre-existing conditions rather than destabilization for modification. Not that I require cinema to solve the world for me or close with systemic evolution, yet if the focus is on constant transformation, I'm doubtful about the minuscular alterations of the social environment beyond sporadic altruistic gestures that dissipate near the finale in favor of assimilation. Unfortunate after some of its fascinations lied in the disruption of conducts discordant with the society of manners; an antagonism in the encounter between standards of correctness and behaviors against that respectability (like in Boudu sauvé des eaux). Its goal isn't description but speculation, so its utopia reads as unimaginative.

I watched it with my GF and she also was a bit disappointed with the ending and wished for one which would have been as disturbing as the premise.
But I think having her interested and willing to go back to marriage, as promised, is an interesting counterpoint to what would otherwise feel like a pedestrian feminist message:
The message is not "she just aspires to live as she pleases and is prevented to by patriarchal society"
But "She aspires to fit in, but wants to learn everything there is about life. Which, she later finds out, also means discovering darkness."

  15. 3 months ago

Poor Things is fun because you can interpret it as a feminist screed against the patriarchy, or you can watch it as a /misc/ bait script about a woman with the literal brain of a baby who grows up to be a leftist prostitute and suffers no consequences for it because she's pretty.

      Anonymous

      This, yeah, kinda.
It's not a good example of either extremes, though (it's neither perfectly feminist nor perfectly Pol), but it does denounces the impasse that (female) hedonism leads to and the need for boundaries.

even if that's the premise (it's not) what the frick is wrong with anything you said the movie says? yes, society is hypocrite and sex is good, and yes society punishes women for enjoying sex and yes it's absurd

        Anonymous

        >society punishes women for sex
        >in 2024 when the most sure path for a woman to become a millionaire is to become an internet prostitute
You feminist morons would complain about oppressive spirit if patriarchy holding you down even if you deleted all men from existence.

As for the overall point - there is nothing absurd about society punishing people for excessive promiscuity. It’s a collective wisdom gathered through thousands of years that serves to preserve that society and even extends to species survival. Setting the norm back to fricking anyone anytime you wish would just devolve us back into mud huts and shitting in the bushes. This applies not only to sex, but to any “feel good” activity done without moderation.
Now the beauty of current day is that on the individual level you can be as transgressive as you want, because there are no laws or any serious consequences, you just need to give no fricks and you’re gtg. So you’re not really oppressed, you just want the society to adopt your personal transgressive standards as the norm, so you don’t feel like the odd one out.

The ending of the book is way better. Max (Archibald in the book) has been narratng the whole story, but the last chapter is written by Bella. She then tells us that the whole thing is made up, and we're left to realise that Max is a huge perv. He imagines his wife with the brain of an infant, that she is taken from him on several occasions by several men, and that she becomes a Parisian prostitute.

Last half hour it kinda lost me, especially when the ex husband shows up. I also hate how it portrays all the men as buttholes, abusers, manipulators, or simps. Whoring isn't good and the one man portrayed in a relatively positive albeit weak light is permissive with whoring. Women are going to watch this and the message will shape their worldview.

Lots of recent movies are like this, but not this one.
Godwin Baxter is a very sympathetic (if flawed) character. So is his assistant/her husband. The only completely dark character is the original husband and from what he's saying, it seems his wife, the body of Bella, was every bit as sadistic as him.

I like me some cinema, just don't like stuff that looks as fake as that.
Glad that you can see past it and enjoy it.

      >Porno trash
It's hilarious that anons itt keep hammering this point when you don't see a single hard penis in the entire movie.
So it's true what they say, that a good half of Cinemaphile doesn't watch the movies they complain about.

They should have gave the nomination to my boy Greta. No awards should go to Greek pretentious gay until they pay their debts.

      >men bad women good
very much no. Most of the men characters are sympathetic, if flawed. Even the unsympathetic ones usually still feels redeemable.
The female characters are also flawed and (often) in shades of grey.
The main character is absolutely clearly an autistic moron, who does a lot of bad decisions.
