the movies really tone down how fricking famous harry is and how grateful everyone (especially adults) are for something he can't even remember. after book 4 the world turns on him, but before that snape had far more reasons to hate him.
I remember when I read the books I spent a lot of time envisioning how all the scenes would look in a movie, so I was very disappointed when the actual movie came out.
Later on I finally understood that film adaptations don't have to follow books word for word as long as they properly capture the meaning, but it took a while.
Incidentally I remember thinking the movie should have a rock theme song with vocals, so in retrospect I'm glad they didn't go with my idea.
I did the same thing, actually dropped the books because the movies didn’t look how I had pictured hogwarts at all. Eventually came back to the books and I now enjoy the look of the movies but when they first came out it was so different from how I imagined it all I hated it.
