And in those 3,000 years nobody has ever invented electricity? Hard to believe. Or is there an in-universe explanation that higher technology doesn't work on the planet?

Middle-Earth is in a state of constant decline, not development. Magic is slowly leaving it, and the only places that are reminiscent of the previous glory are elven enclaves protected by the power of the Three.
Numenor had steam engines and shit, but they got wrecked. Saruman made plenty of industrial inventions including gunpowder. But in general elves have no interest in developing technology past a certain point, while other races are not as capable and their progress is slow and constantly reset by wars and so on.

honestly I can't remember, but somewhere Tolkien described them as having metal ships that didn't need to use sails among other technical marvels.

            >Our ships go now without the wind, and many are made of metal that sheareth hidden rocks, and they sink not in calm or storm; but they are no longer fair to look upon. Our towers grow ever stronger and climb ever higher, but beauty they leave behind upon earth…our shields are impenetrable, our swords cannot be withstood, our darts are like thunder and pass over leagues unerring

History of Middle Earth, it's just one idea Tolkien toyed with over Numenorean tech, not everybody is a fan of a kind of steam punk-esque vision of Numenor though

              >not everybody is a fan of a kind of steam punk-esque vision of Numenor though
i definitely am not. Numenor (at least in the beginning) were elf-larpers, if anyone should be steampunk, it's the dwarves

Depends on the elves. The Sindar (and a majority of the Nandor) never forgave the dwarves for the slaying of Thingol and the sacking of Doriath. The Noldor though were on slightly better terms. The more extraordinary example of friendship was between Narvi and Celebrimbor. Galadriel also had good opinions of them while Celeborn did like them at all.

Alternatively, a lack of records of hobbits from earlier Ages could simply reflect how hobbits tend to keep to themselves, and the other races tend to dismiss and call them halflings and ignore them.
There are men in LotR who still seem to have no idea what a halfling is

It seems to me that Tolkien purposely omitted hobbits from the second age to emphasize how truly impressive the actions of the hobbits in LOTR we're. It's also weird to have them around for so long because in LOTR the rohhiram and treebears aren't even aware of them.

So basically as Tolkein would have had it, Hobbits were doing just fine for themselves, much better than they were by the time of the original story, during the late second age and almost the entirety of the third age slowly sliding into obscurity as Arnor fell and feuded and no longer protected them. Eventually reverting back to almost complete myth by the time of the war of the ring

you know, this makes galadriel's speech describing what would happen if she controlled the one ring feel different. loooots of emphasis on how she would be beautiful, light, and fair instead of "dark". do you think the series finale of the rings of power will be galadriel using the ring to enact the final ̶s̶o̶l̶u̶t̶i̶o̶n̶ battle?

It's very aulic, like something out of a classical greco-roman arcadian myth. I think it really suit the Second Age, more than the gritty realism of Jackson that more suited the late Third Age, the last straw of the mythical age

I am no Amazon shill. I'm 90% sure it will be shit. But they nailed the atmosphere at least. Gritty Realism like in LOTR wouldnt had been suited an era where OP demigods and superhumans were a rather still common sight (while not being as common as in the First Era ofc), and civilizations were still powerfull and numerous

Elves are both warrior and mage, especially Noldors.

        >Elves are both warrior and mage, especially Noldors
this, Galadriel's brother led armies vs Morgoth then had a magical singing contest against Sauron. The Noldor from the noble houses were completely OP, including the females

          Anonymous

She's even more Op considering her mother was a Vanyar, the strongest and most divine breed of eldars

      Anonymous

No. Tolkien likened her to an amazon in her youth (as expected of any female elf forced to interact with war), but the show is likely to disrespect even that assumption by making her an action hero.

As for being a mage, she was taught by Melian, who was a greater 'angelic spirit' than Gandalf, but she is herself not of the same stock. Her magic has to deal with protection and indirectness. Had Sauron actually confronted her, she would fall. Her encounter with Sauron in the Hobbit wasn't very accurate. Her destroying Dol Goldur may also be interpreted as her army doing the work, not via magic. Her actual magical capacity is open to interpretation.

Gandalf's magical capacity meanwhile was vastly downplayed in the movies.

If you want to liken it to DnD then she would have more cleric type abilities, protection against evil, healing, cleansing, that kind of thing

If she does it will be absolutely fricking awful. Like that time they threw in fireballs in Game of Thrones - there was no such thing in the books.

        Anonymous

Would had been fine having her teenager rebellion phase in the First Era, given all the Noldors were hot heated troublemakers back in the time
But by the Second Era, she understood her cousin's autism and became much more mature and majestic, akin to her Vanyar maternal relatives

        Anonymous

No one has any idea about her personality at the time. The only time it's described is in the First Era, where she has a hidden lust for power, though otherwise is basically saintly. The Galadriel in LOTR is, in elvish scale, five minutes until retirement.

The production values are very good and couldnt be any less, given the gigantic budget.
People are worried for the script and the lore rapes. The leak about Niggolas being actually a half elf may had solved this specific lore rape. But the others like Warrior Galadriel, the Dwarf Queen and condensing all the major events of the Second Age in few years are still there

The hobbits weren't all white. Tolkien never goes into their race, you just know they are like humans so there is a mix.

It would be insane to think all hobbits are the same skin color. Literally insane.

Commissioned for five, they said it's set in stone and irrespective of viewing figures. I don't doubt them tbh, they have sunk way took much money into it they want this big name content for Prime

Remember, it's not just a televion series. It's a completely new form of entertainment.
