It's an enormous step up in the sense that it doesn't actively try to outdo anything the 1st on is good at, it just focuses on delivering in other areas
No one gives a shit about Kane or any other side character in the franchise outside of Aliens. Maybe maybe maybe Ash you can make a case for but that's about it, every other interesting character is from the sequel.
Struggle to remember Charles Dance's character name from the 3rd one (Clement?) and he's the best character

Aliens is an action movie that turned the alien into a bug, it's the most low brow Alien movie.
The notion that Alien and Aliens are somehow at different brow levels is completely absurd and doesn't hold up to any amount of scrutiny.
Neither of them are brainless schlock or heady arthouse. They're at the exact same level of intellectual profundity.

A film's plot description and themes aren't a measure of how high brow it is. Beavis&Butt-head and Network both deal with the phenomenon of television, you wouldn't say they're equally high-brow or low-brow.

No, it's terrible by any metric, especially that one. Over half the cast is just there, they have no distinguishing characteristics or charisma, they are simply there to be picked off at some point (the ugly haggard white women and the interracial couple come to mind). They make increasingly stupid and illogical decisions to the point where you can no longer invest in their survival (doctor manhattan sticking his whole head in a xenomorph egg, crew STILL not wearing helmets). And to top of it all off, the creature is shot in BROAD DAYLIGHT at flat, still angles, completely removing any aspect of actual horror.
So what are we left with? A CGI "Faces of Death" where a bunch of unlikable generic nobodies are killed by digital clipart in the most uncreative ways.
Literally all of this is the bread and butter of slasher movies.

- Legitimately everything else in this film. Garbage characters, garbage plot, garbage message, the horror element does not exist, weak gore. The technical aspects are passable but are in service of what is ultimately a pretty shitty movie no one would defend if it wasn't a sequel to Prometheus and thus gave fuel to contrarians.
For me it's the homosexuals and race mixers being killed in horrific ways.
