This is the best on tv in a long time. Beautiful, slow paced and great acting. Have you seen it and what did you think?

I like Asians in real life but I can't stand Asians on my screen, it's a strange thing.
I like seeing them on my screen
They're speaking old Japanese, the verb endings are longer
The original was better
The Japanese infestation of America’s culture is exactly the kind of shit Phillip K. Dick predicted.
Any Japanese speakers here? Every other sentence in this show ends with a phrase that sounds like "arimaseru" or something like that, what does it mean?
Speech particles indicating that you're mom
Good ahead, 4chinz weebs, this is your forte. What’s the answer, you frickin incels?
Arimasu, tbh, etc. are -suffixes to end the sentences in polite way. When Japanese talk, there's a certain way you adress others when you court/be polite.
In their culture is very rude to say something like "I am going to the grocery", because it doesnt 'bend' or 'sound' like that - it comes an 'order' or a 'matter of fact' instead, which gives impression of hardheadness and conflict (their whole culture is about "dont rock the boat").
thanks anon
Another small thing; Japanese always ends with a verb. (Or at least most of times) So its also why you probably hear -arimasu (will do) -arimasen (will not do) alot.
That's keigo, basically Japanese has 3 different words for every verb that represent 3 different levels of politeness.
1. neutral language = teineigo
2. superior language = senkougo
3. inferior language = kenjugo
Basically, in anime chararacters usually speak in teineigo.
While almost everyone in this show speaks in kenjugo, with the exception of Torenaga and Ishido who speak in senkougo
When you learn Japanese, you are instructed to learn kenjugo first.
I checked out after they introduced their anime villain and ran their state-mandated "being a woman is so hard" episode. Is the season over yet and is it even worth finishing?
It's not even finished.
Websites like IMDB and RT should disallow ratings until things are at least finished.
>Tono...
this guy was based
I loved seeing him fend of an attack and take off on horseback; old guy has seen some shit and shan't be taken down by his enemies.
not even the best show with Anna Sawai. Shogun is a decent compromise between kino and wide appeal. If you think this is the best tv in a long time, then you simply expose yourself as a person who only watches mainstream stuff
lmao, she is the prostitute that died of aids. And surprise, surprise. She was casted as a zainichi, of course. Because she looks like a Thai.
>lmao, she is the prostitute that died of aids
no, she isn't. That was a different character
>Anna Sawai.
It's rare that I find someone so beautiful it takes my breath away but holy shit.
underaged or b8, she's not even the best girl in shogun. Go outside, this manfaced zainichi looking b***h is not the most attractive anything.
>underaged or b8
I'm the opposite. Certified oldgay, maybe that's why.
You don’t have a Chinatown nearby?
>You don’t have a Chinatown nearby?
No, live in the ass end of Europe
You mean you live in the based end. Cherish it, won’t last long
>You mean you live in the based end
Don't wanna derail the thread, but you wouldn't say that if you lived here.
>when he BTFO's her with the truth about women in the workplace
kek, Pachinko was series of the year for 2022, shame barely anyone watched it.
That was the other qt girl, moron-kun.
it's pretty boring. The main actor is wooden af too I can hardly watch Anjin's acting. cute girls and Yabushige is alright I guess, 6/10
Yabushige has switched sides so many times it's hard to keep track which he's on, Toranaga should've executed him.
Trust the plan
even when he's doing the worst shit, he's so damn likeable
>beautiful
the sets and costumes are excellent but the ugly ass post processing effects and being filmed in canada ruined it visually. Fricking HATE this blurry fisheye shit.
As for the rest of the show it kind of meandered throughout basically the entire middle, which for a 1 season show isn't great.
>Beautiful,
homie the whole thing is grey, it looks incredibly unnatural
>Beautiful
Every shot looks like it's been shot against a green screen and they got some first year student to ad in fake lighting/depth of field in post.
I get why they did this, probably to hide the fact that they shot it in canada instead of Japan.
But It looks fricking terrible.
Its ok.. I started on the first season but have to rewatch because every time I start watching my gf is a horny beast and I get distracted or Ive had too many beers
Its shit
it feels like they spent all of the budget on the first 3 episodes then gave up, terrible camera work, plain shots, sluggish dialogue, off screen battles, terribly slow fight choreography, underdeveloped relationships, subplots that go nowhere, etc..
nah, it isn't kino
>This is the best on tv in a long time
it's nowhere near succession, chernobyl, the boys, the bear S1, the haunting of hill house, queen's gambit, even last season's got and euphoria S1
>it's nowhere near a bunch of shit
good, thanks for a recommendation
Femslop
This is ridiculous.
It was in that list the very second the first episode aired.
To say there is a bot/shill recency bias issue on IMDB is the understatement of the century.
Started good, middle episodes became boring, but it turned around and last two were kino.
I hate Disney+ subtitles they are so buggy.
>Mariko I will not let you leave Osaka because I want you as a political prisoner
>Actually wait I'll let you leave after all don't have a nice day
>Hehe jk I'm going to send assassins to murder you anyways surely no one will trace it back to me who was the only one objecting to your departure
I don't get it.
There's nothing to get. It's moronic writing. Looking at the book as a whole it's obvious that Clavell wanted to stop writing it, so he abruptly decided to end the book.
Either way Ishido was fricked the moment Mariko arrived because she'd create enough problems that the other hostage would want to leave too.
It actually what happen. The real Mariko (Hosokawa Gracia) was a hostage of the real life counterpart of Ishido, until her retainer Ogasawara Shousai killed her and burn the mansion were Gracia and her servants were living.
That was the perfect excuse for Tokugawa (the real life Toranaga) to make new alliances and push others daimyous to betray Ishida Mitsunari (Ishido).
its a shitty airport novel on the screen. don't think too much about it lol
>Hehe jk I'm going to send assassins to murder you anyways surely no one will trace it back to me who was the only one objecting to your departure
>surely no one will trace it back to me who was the only one objecting to your departure
Yes? I mean if the assassination attempt is successful everybody is just going to side with whose in power. If it goes wrong, he's literally just in square one again. Mariko had him in a checkmate situation, and his only way forward was to just murder them. Yeah people would spread rumors, but nothing they could actually verify.
Look up Hosokawa Gracia
>Have you seen it
I never watch a show before all episodes are available - the 1 episode per week model should be buried and forgotten
imagine if you read 1 chapter of a book per week, then read 2-3 whole books the other days of the week
sounds stupid?
yes - because it is
I'll watch it at my own pace when everything is available
with the amount of good (not new - good) content available if you still stick to the 1 episode per week model it means you are stupid
"PREVIOUSLY ON SHOGUN..." - enjoy not skipping it
it would've been fine if they delivered a solid kino.
they didn't tho
There's only one episode left it'll be out by the time you watch the first 9
>it'll be out by the time you watch the first 9
or maybe I'll drop the show and simply read the descriptions of the plot of the others - faster and smarter
and I'll have watched/read/learned other things in the meantime
do you still think the kleptomania hours spent on breaking bad by clueless writers were worth a dime to advance the main story?
>imagine if you read 1 chapter of a book per week, then read 2-3 whole books the other days of the week
>sounds stupid?
Yeah, that Charles Dickens, eh? And that Jules Verne, what dumbasses, AMIRITE?
yes - because the times were different, and the demands were different
why would I want to wait a week for something new/revolutionary when there are so many other options available?
I'll just wait - I'm a patient man and not an impulsive one who will pay for 10 issues instead of one
it's not like I'm deprived of anything else
Why did they kill off my waifu in the last episode?
Her death felt pointless.
> Beautiful
What part? Visually it's terrible. Almost every scene is obviously in a sterile indoor studio, everything is blue, and the annoying blur around the edge of the frame.
>slow paced
Cant argue with that
>great acting
50/50
I like the show but it's not anything special. It's a step up from the usual trash, it's at least trying and I appreciate that.
>It's a step up from the usual trash, it's at least trying and I appreciate that.
This, they’ve done a nice job and I hope more streaming shows go in this direction.
Mariko is dead. And with her, my soul
Anjin-sama not having his translator is giving me real Mr. Wrench and Mr. Numbers vibes. He's not going to have anyone to talk to.
He can still talk to the priests.
Absolute WMAFKINO (2024)
This is an overrated show from an even more overrated book but ricecel seethe make it worth it
Can John start walking properly now? He's been on land for a while, no need to flop around.
I loved it at first but lost interest around episode six. Blackthorne is not developing well, Toranaga is an butthole, and let's face it, the show looks like cheap Syfy dogshit
I think the problem was that they have to filter everything women act in through the moronic Bechdel test bullshit so women have to have their own agency and impact events as much as men and it’s standing out because women were property in Japan at this period. So they’ve made it so the mopey b***h that couldn’t keep her legs closed was the real hero. It’s jarring and it stops the narrative cold.
>9 episodes of nothing happening
Yawn.
it's basically Seinfeld in Feudal Japan
Just from watching this it seems to me that politics in Imperial Japan were decided around which ruler had the most followers that would kill themselves for no reason. The Japanese are a ridiculous people.
Predict the Finale, i will start:
>buntaro sees mariko in nightmare scene, her ghost tells him how much she hates him and that she patiently awaits the anjin in the afterlife
>yabushigay is brought before toranaga who asks him what happened, yabu says i duno i was drinkin sake, both grunt
>anjin wanders around and meets his old crew again; he teaches them advanced japanese
>fuji confesses her love to anjin, but he rebuffs her because he hasn't regenerated his cum yet after fricking kiku again
>ghost mariko appears and fricks anjin right when he has regen'ed his precious English cum
>word has spread across Jap-Ans of the BWC's heroism
>toranaga burns anjin's rotting ship and prevents him from leaving because he who controlls the BWC controls the Jap-Ans
>remaining regents vote ishido out but he pulls out a by-law stating that because he is married to ochiba no c**ta, he is now shogun
>toranaga contemplates another surrender plan
>buntaro commits seppuku, fuji his is second, using her staff thing, then she jumps off a cliff
>show ends on a cliffhanger with anjin gazing at the cliff's edge wondering how much Jap-An slit he'll have to pleasure next
>4 episodes of people talking and nothing happens
The history is cool but the novel was kinda bad honestly, is the show actually good or is it just weebBlack folk here propping it up
