Why does this board hate this movie so much? Is "war is bad" a controversial message?
I can't speak for anyone else but personally I just see it as the most broad, uninspiring work that could be touted. The reason this movie has risen to this huge acclaim over time is because you don't need any honed sensitivity or personal proclivities to any of its subject matter, if you are a human with a fundamental survival instinct the movie will affect you. I think if you spend any greater amount of time engaging with art of any form, you'll find works that speak to more personal and insightful subject matter than this film deals with.
Also personally I'm not totally sold that this is the best way to deliver a "war is bad" message. The film is still really thrilling during a number of sequences, and I could see people seeing the anarchy and loss of control in the film as something invigorating and honorable (as if this movie shows the sacrifices needed to "fight for ones country"). I could even see people interpreting the ending as "thank god we took down the bad guy with violence" rather than a lament that the conflict happened at all.
