this is truly one of the most overrated episodes of any Television show to ever exist.

this is truly one of the most overrated episodes of any Television show to ever exist. it doesnt even quite feel representative of the show (seasons 1-3, movie), it feels like an in-joke. yet its totally dickrode, many agreeing its the best of the show. The Secret Box, the episode previous and connected to this one, is even a better episode.

Secret box has a cop out ending.
    >you have to use your imagination to imagine the photos
Why didn't the writers do that, it's their fricking job.

Does anyone else hate how Spongebob's cheeks are drawn from season 4 and onwards? It ruins the entire design

      Anonymous

You're the only other person I've seen who recognizes this. They used to be drawn pointing up, now they're drawn pointing inward, which emphasizes how the writing has made him come off younger, stupider, more annoying. I literally consider the cheeks symbolic of the show's decline, it started around season 4, and they went hard into it by season 6.

i just overall dislike spongebobs design changes over the years. the season 1 design was superb, and then it gradually become more and more square and clean looking

I just realized how fricking huge his pupils are now, they need to cut them back down.
It feels fricking weird that this show has been on the air for 25 years now, I still remember watching it the night it premiered in 1999.

Season 2 is the best one. Seasons 5-8 looks like they tried to get him back to the Season 2 design but then based off Season 9+ they clearly didn't commit.

It's the Simpsons of young millennials and zoomers. Earliest seasons are great and endlessly quotable, but today is still shambling along with older fans arguing about when it actually became shit.
It leads me to wonder, what is better for a show?
            >To continue unabated and slowly change over the years, to the point it feels entirely different every decade for a new audience (Simpsons, SpongeBob)
            or
            >have a 5 year run, go away, and then return 10 years later in a reboot (Alvin, Scooby Doo, TMNT)
I think the second example usually does better. Even if people draw comparisons to the original/earlier versions, the show still stands on it's own as being "new." SB and Simpsons will never escape the shadow of the earlier seasons.

Definitely the latter but I hate how every series needs a fricking reboot or remake these days, feels like we’re in creative stagnation so bad.

      soul vs. soulless

It's weird how modern animation like this always manages to over simplify core designs and subtle features while also over detailing minor shit that doesn't matter. It somehow manages to feel corporate and soulless while also cluttered at the same time

The shift to digital ruined cartoons

      >Throughout the season's run, from 1999 to 2001, SpongeBob was animated using cel animation. The show shifted to digital ink and paint animation during its second season in 2000.
That was relatively early... it actually did well during the second and third season. It didn't go widescreen till S9.

You want to talk about overrated episodes?
    >Futurama episode with Fry's Dog
    >Futurama episode Luck of the Fryish

They aren't funny or clever. The only reason why anyone remembers them is because it makes people sad which is a stupid reason to love episodes of a literal comedy cartoon.

I also agree with Band Geeks episode of Spongebob. They only care about the song. The episode itself is mid.
