The reveal in the comics is that they're actually dying off and there's barely any of them left. The real purpose of their 'conquering', at least for the time being, is finding a race they can reproduce with where the spawn is a close enough genetic match to Viltrumites to pass.

I always found it funny that the Viltrumites in the comic look like a race of dads. They're almost all middle-aged looking men with moustaches and various stages of receding hairline. The show diversified them so you don't get that little amusing visual thing any more.
The show seems to lean more into the eugenics thing by having them all be good looking. In the comic they're more of a warrior race and they're mostly pretty ugly.
