Reminder that this speech wasn't in the books and Peter Jackson was adressing every single white man with this speech.

LotR needed more death. It's not that death makes a good story but when you bring that many characters to the brink of it you shouldn't have Borormir get the only tragic ending of the series.

Faramir and or Eowyn, since they are death baited for a good 10 mins or more and both have touching character development and heavy audience investment. However, Gandalf dying in FotR would have turned that story into something transcendent, I realize that's just not possible because of Tolkien. But every time I watch FotR now the perfection of the balrog chase to the slopes outside of Moria is undermined by the sequels. Long diatribes in RotK about how things can never be the same after so much suffering also ring hollow when everyone young, brave and beautiful came through basically unscathed.

        >theodin

I don't think Theodin was tragic because his greatest desire was becoming worthy of his ancestors in battle.

      >Boromir
      >Theodin
      >Gandalf
      >Based book Denethor (ruined in movies)
      >Sauruman and Wormtongue (books)
      >fricking scourging of the shire (books)
Good list so far, without even going into the hordes of unnamed characters that die

I mean the death of good guys that the reader is invested in, not villains. People opposed to Sauron, it's not too tragic when people who joined him cop it. It is basically only Boromir and Theodin.

Denethor isn’t a villain in the books- he’s a tragic character who fell into despair from Sauron’s machinations.

Besides, both the books and the movies end with Bilbo, Frodo, Gandalf, and the elves going to the undying lands which may as well be their deaths. Books include the scourging of the shire as well.

if you were reading them without any cultural knowledge, you would also be affected by gandalf's death

Shame about the final movie. The semen slurping ghost army ruined the ending for me. Who cares about the stakes and heroics when you just have a cheat code deciding the outcome.

in the books the ghosts only take out umbar’s fleet, its aragorn leading an army of various men of western gondor who come to the relief of minas tirith

Jackson is a horrible hack and his movies were shit but had great casting. In the very first scene Sauron drops a CGI nuke. Dwarves used as comedy fodder. Elves dying at Helm's Deep in droves. Featuring Legolas from the DMC series.
