My mom and dad saw this in theaters when they were 19 and my mom forced my dad to walk out after the cross in the pussy scene. she said a lot of people walked out. My dad said he was pissed because he liked the movie and he took me to the re release in 2000 and the staircase scene fricked me up for a while.
For me it's really up there with the best of them regardless of genre. Superb pacing, great acting, excellent character development, the University town & Middle Eastern atmosphere, the spiritual themes/underlying messages and finally the triumph of the Divine over evil by paying the ultimate price.
If you’re looking for a great memoir to read or listen to, I can’t recommend The Friedkin Connection enough. He was one of the last of his kind of complete lunatic film directors.
idk he pretty much fricked around for the rest of his career after exorcist/sorcerer

Sorcerer was such a crazy difficult shoot and such a big flop that he was never really trusted with a budget of that size again. He still made some good stuff afterward. I recently watched Cruising for the first time and it’s a really unique thriller.
Rosemary’s baby, if we’re on the topic of all time classic

>Rosemary’s baby
It's a very well made film indeed, but I find its message to be the very antithesis to The Exorcist. Basically as perverted as it gets, utter malevolence and corruption of the pure. Which makes for great horror, but from a general film-watching standpoint left me with a sour taste.

Blatantly supernatural. I will never understand why Cinemaphile is obsessed with this sort of ambiguous 'it was all in their head' fan theory trash. That’s just bad screenwriting.
It was a different time.
Did you really just make a thread to shit on The Exorcist, Zoomsley?

Recently watched for the first time and it was a genuine masterpiece.
Same. It's still better than 99% of horror movies made after it.

I love that Friedkin actually filmed the opening scenes in Iraq instead of just faking it out in the California desert or something.
Friedkin wasn't known for fricking around.

>just 99%
Not to be an autist but you realize that would be hundreds of horror movies. Only The Shining is better
I wouldn't say better. I would say just as good.
What are some other good horror kino
