the tension is great in the beginning, the music fits the scene and makes it feel really cool, and it's low key compared to the later movies where it's 50 people swarming him and somehow he never gets shot
there's also a cool part of the scene where the bullets sync up great with the beat of the song

This. Wtf does John even want? All the sequels have been him running away. The original is the only real movie with dramatic stakes of the bunch. The rest are just overblown stunt choreography demos.
I don't remember 3 at all but 4 had worse fights than 1 and 2. The main problem was they went on for too fricking long.
The other problem is they were lazy. Pretty much every fight was just people swarming him like that scene in JW2 but most of the characters were generic mooks.
I watched the 2nd one and that's where it gets really goofy. It was better in 1 when the underworld stuff is obliquely referenced, we get glimpses and meet some people but it's largely a mystery.
Once they start showing more and you see how many fricking people are involved in this mysterious underworld, it stops being interesting and starts being stupid.
I think I'm done, the others won't have better action so there's no reason to continue.
I think they should ended up with a gold key on the third one with a Jonh Wick's redemption and closure. The 4th one felt unnecessary and boring, indeed.
