Cruise's Reacher 2 had very similar issues as S2 actually. Extreme drop in film making quality, lack of writing cleverness (McQuarrie nailed it so well in 1, Zwick is a hack) + killing the marysue power fantasy badass individualism of the character by giving him a bunch of low-energy women and kid sidekicks

Even though it's a basic spoonfed theme there are still brainlets who complain about Nealey being successful in the private sector as if it's supposed to be sjw messaging, when it's just about establishing the comical contrast of Reacher being autismo who can't evolve and adhere to normie society rules, like the pussy hound becoming a cucked dad. I liked some of the old unit scenes like it was obvious Reacher arranged the fight to create team building. That contrasting group dynamic is good, the problem is it's used to transform the show into NCIS like OP said.

My favorite part was the 3 dudes with machineguns shooting the bald dude for 5 minutes and not landing anything. And then for no reason he decides to walk out of cover (which they werent even advancing on) and gets himself killed for that heroic sacrifice scene. I disagree somewhat in that, if done correctly, it's like the ticking timebomb the audience knows is in the room, but the bad guys don't.
Hitchwiener had a very strong theory that a bomb just blowing up in the middle of a scene, while surprising, doesn't really get under their skin like knowing the bomb is there while the scene carries on. They still get the momentary shock of the blast when it does go off, but there's a tension/release aspect that's far more satisfying in the final execution.
Reacher, done correctly, is setting this unstoppable machine on a path after carefully setting up a bunch of obstacles in his way that have no idea what's coming, but think they're prepared for anything.
The fun is in watching him destroy everything and how others react to it.
Same thing with watching Arnie walk into a scene in a Terminator movie.
You know he's gonna frick someone up, the question is how, and how awesome it's gonna be.
The problem, specifically with S2, is that Reacher is surrounded by equally fire-proof destroyers of lesser stature.

The real argument is that the show is being mishandled, not that it is fundamentally flawed at the concept level. It would be very easy for a competent filmmaker to make a tension-filled Reacher story if he followed Hitchwiener's observations about how audiences respond to built-up threats and the nature of expectation and anticipation.
Reacher is an unstoppable Slasher-style antagonist, but flipped over into the protagonist role (he's a power fantasy). Follow the structure of a Slasher movie, but flip the good guys and bad guys, and you get a fun tension filled story. Except the "Slasher" wins at the end after slashing his way (creatively) through the bad guys and their various attempts to evade or kill him.
There shouldn't be any tension you moron.
The biggest problem with the show is how it isn't constant action despite having a 2ft tall trained truck as a protagonist.

S1 was okay, other than reacher being ultimate good at almost everything he needed to do, just way too multi-disciplined. S2 is where it got really bad, especially at the base getting hit episode. It was just baffling comedic as it went from 'logical' to 'everyone is a moron and they fail hard to set up the rest of the season'. I don't think it ever recovered after that. Be it director or choreographer, that was fricking terrible.
Season 1 seems like a masterpiece compared to this steaming pile of season 2 shit

It's actually done on purpose as a honeytrap. The creators of these shows are always woke, but are self-aware enough to hide it at first or at least keep it to a minimum in order to capture an audience.

he was going full bore at his brothers murderers, this is making him question himself because he would bnever thik one of his sqaud would go bad, ther is a difference its in the novel as well, for one of the first times reacher is unsure of his own judgement, everything tells him swan can't be dirty, but...as others have said it would've been nice if they did another reacher only story before getting to this one.

S1 was kino, comfy small southern town neo-western vibe, protagonist is essentially Shane, the drifter coming into a new town and helping strangers, it had awesome pacing, strong humor/energy and good character chemistry with the two other cops, simple conspiracy plot but done extremely well, very satisfying to binge watch in one go
S2 I made the mistake of watching it live, having to wait a full week for a new episode to drop, and it completely killed it for me. First few eps were decent enough, I can appreciate they tried to do a different formula, more urban setting and ensemble cast, the group dynamic is decent enough but it makes it way more generic as a result.
It feels cheaper visually, obvious they are now rushing through production to churn out seasons quickly, I call this "streaming platform season 2 syndrome" where S1 will be of good quality but then they know audience is hooked and they stop caring and start milking it.
S1 action scenes weren't shot very well, still suffered from TV action scene syndrome of insipid filmmaking but they had these little quirky ideas that made the show extremely fun, just the size and brute force and "indifferent amorality" of Reacher, breaking a corpse legs to make it fit in the trunk and shit like that felt novel for this kind of show. By comparison the action in S2 has no energy or surprise or cleverness to it. More focus on the stronk womyn doing stupid shit like that car trunk nonsense in the last one.
Pacing-wise, I still love those trademark "badass oneliner -> cut to titles/rock riff" moments.
The new conspiracy plot is insipid and having to wait a week for snail pace progress is killing any sense of mystery, I couldn't care less about what's happening, and can't even remember who did what or why, Robert Patrick only there for a paycheck but he's lost all his charisma, there's no sense of place like Margrave and we don't care about the victims.
I'd probably be lenient if I had binge watched S2.

Mostly I don't like full season drops, but reacher would benefit from it because you are essentially watching a page turner that you have to wait another week to get to the next chapter. this series as books were designed to read the entire thin a single night aka binge

It's the book they chose. It is one of the very few books where he has more than just a love interest, a point of contact and some lose contacts. It is also one of the weakest and least interesting villains.
And I have no idea why they moved the story from LA to NY. It doesn't really matter, but I don't see why.

I was a Reacher reader years ago, the core of the series is big guy brutally killing criminals, preferably as a revenge. Bad luck and trouble was my favorite book, so I'm okay with him working with a team. Currently dumb shooting scenes etc don't annoy me, as long as he keeps murdering, I'm fine with the show and it keeps giving me what I expect and want.
