Instead of dwelling on conventional cat and mouse detective stuff, because of the supernatural premise the plot takes other elements to the maximum as well like L's super-intelligence and the introduction of Misa + another shinigami and deathnote.
It's interesting because we see Light manage these unexpected powers and their rules to his advantage, but it also shoots the fun cat and mouse stuff forward in a way that feels way too fast.
Death Note tells you that a super intense cat and mouse mind game is going on but barely shows it. You have maybe only 2 moments where they are portrayed with any sort of intelligence. One when L deduces that Light is in Japan and the second is Light writing down fake rules in the death note. The rest is just autistic jap shit navel gazing like the tennis match or the "L did you know gods of death love apples"?
There's a lot of other instances of cat/mouse games, it's just that they're unconventional because of the supernatural circumstances. Most of the time, L knows Light is Kira but he can't do anything about it, which is very unusual.
The bullshit is when Light offs the entire FBI team, for example, using the agent assigned to him as a tool. If he was smart he wouldn't have done that.
That's what I mean by moving the cat/mouse game forward too fast. Light has to be stupid, and L has to be too smart. It leads to a lot of intense moments you wouldn't see if they were pussyfooting around each other, which befits the supernatural premise, but is unsatisfying in a way.
