this was aesthetically awesome but holy shit was it ever technically and thematically a mess
orlando blooms charachter is probably the most poorly written and protagonist ive ever seen. despite the story of his search for spiritual redemption and immersion into cutthroat feudal politics, he just a blank slate who almost never expresses any inner conflict or turmoil, barely ever expresses anything at all, never grows as a person or changes at all, in 3 hours. he is just completely flat and forgettable
on that note the pacing was unfortunate. 3 hours long and the film still feels rushed and theres no room for anything or anyone on screen to really breathe
then you have the thematic issue, as is well known, evil christianity tends to be exaggerated while muslim aggression and religiosity are downplayed throughout the film to fit better with the themes
despite the above, Raynald of Châtillon was actually even more evil IRL than he was shown to be, which grinds my gears because with the real life story of the fall of jerusalem and evil bastards like Raynald of Châtillon you have the opportunity to tell a real and meaningful story about the evil corruptions of worldly desires and the need for spiritual vigilance against such corrupting influences, but instead we get those themes twisted into "religion bad and le evil crusaders calling "god wills it" and post-9/11 "omg they are so mean and racist to the poor innocent muslims :(" etc. and saladins religious fervour being downplayed so he can be shown as a skeptical voice of reason to compliment orlando blooms character, and it was just kinda shit

good analysis, but, don't know what else to add
director's cut is perfect frick off moron
>bad writing is perfect
get a load of this guy
if I eat taco bell my shits are 100% bigger but they certainly aren't 100% better
>shits defy the laws of thermodynamics
>anon isn’t proud enough of this to call them better than boring old physics-obeying shits
What kind of homosexual are you?
my boring regular shits don't burn my butthole
>food analogy
I still haven't seen this because I knew it'd be complete bullshit
Problem is movies are an inherently weak story telling format and it should have been a series. How do you do anything decently with 2 hours?
yea thats what i was thinking, even with 3 hours youre just rapidly jumping from scene to scene just to cover the basic plot beats with no time to let things sink in an give every detail its time in the sun
id love to see the fall of jerusalem covered by a larger more accurate series
Orlando Bloom was terrible casting but the real failure is the bizarre script full of liberal nonsense. Killing Guy and marrying Sybilla was the clear moral thing to do and Balian causes horrible misery and death by choosing to do nothing until the army arrives at the gates of Jerusalem without the slightest hint of guilt. Balian implying Guy could still redeem himself at the end is delusional and contemptible behavior.
Doing nothing does not make you sinless.
>Orlando Bloom was terrible casting
i really think he would have been so bad if the writting for the character wasnt so shitty
Literally every good character is an anachronistic secular humanist because ridley lives in a cartoon reality where being a good or bad person is entirely defined by your belief system. In his mind devout = evil, so in the middle ages of all periods we need atheist characters so they’re can be protagonists
this is the heart of it for me. the fall of jerusalem involved all sorts of very real moral failings on part of the lords of the crusader states and moral lessons to depict, but instead of taking advantage of that real story, you get this shitty smarmy pseudo-atheist stuff
The duelists is actually a great little film so id go with that
Where can I learn more about the real history behind the fall of jerusalem? That sounds interesting.
seen gladiator
what should i watch of:
duelists
legend
kingdom of heaven
1492
robinhood
last duel
napoleon
>duelists
beautifully shot and good performances
>legend
beautifully shot and kino villain
>kingdom of heaven
roadshow version is identical to the director's cut but it has an intermission... the color grading is terrible however with everything turned to piss blue... less bad edit here but still not great
>1492
>robinhood
>last duel
>napoleon
watch them if ye dare
is the movie anti-crusader?
i think i'd want to cheer for the crusaders
holy shit lol
>Always in need of funds, Raynald tortured Aimery of Limoges, Latin Patriarch of Antioch who had refused to pay a subsidy to him for his invasion of byzantine cyprus.
>When Aimery refused to finance this expedition, Raynald had the Patriarch seized, beaten until bloody, stripped naked, covered in honey, and left in the burning sun on top of the citadel to be attacked by insects
>Raynald attacked a caravan travelling from Egypt to Syria in late 1186 or early 1187, claiming that the truce between Saladin and the Kingdom of Jerusalem did not bind him. After he refused to pay a compensation, Saladin invaded the kingdom and annihilated the crusader army in the Battle of Hattin.
>Raynald and Gerard of Ridefort persuaded Guy of Lusignan to take the initiative and attack Saladin's army, although Raymond III of Tripoli had tried to persuade the king to avoid a direct fight with it. During the debate, Raynald accused Raymond of Tripoli of co-operating with the enemy. Raynalds advice lead to the crushing defeat at the Battle of Hattin
>Most historians have regarded Raynald as an irresponsible adventurer whose lust for booty caused the fall of the Kingdom of Jerusalem.
what an butthole
>an irresponsible adventurer whose lust for booty caused the fall of the Kingdom
a tale as old as time
It was great but the ending sucked
>We need to cast an epic warrior who started as a burly blacksmith,
>That quirky twink Orlando Bloom is available!
This happened twice.
It's funny how KoH threads pop up all the time now. The film has its flaws but I still love it, very quotable and the music is pure kino

It was a great 60 minute movie with what felt like five hours of filler crammed in. I swear to god there was a solid thirty minutes of just Eva green staring anguishedly at the make a wish kid.
it was a cool movie, i just wish it was better
What are some worthwhile Mediaeval/ancient West kino? I missed out on a lot of movies, so far I've just seen Gladiator, KoH (once), and Braveheart. I don't care about historical accuracy.
Excalibur is pretty much the top for western medieval mythos, Flesh + Blood for a more straight medieval movie, every single Joan of Arc movie, including the tv movies, name of the rose for some bookish mystery kino.
I think this is the typical analysis. Bloom's character is the least interesting part of the film. For me the worst part is that Orlando is pratically an atheist. Ridley Scott generally makes event movies where the themes and explanation are left to the wayside.
>evil christianity tends to be exaggerated while muslim aggression and religiosity are downplayed throughout
Saladin disagrees with his other generals about the course of action. King Baldwin IV is portrayed very well. I think the film is more balanced than people seem to believe.
Shite
this movie has been my favorite since it came out and tiktok zoomy bussin morons plus tv contarion morons have ruined fr fr
