The movie is supposed to be as nihlistic and edgy as possible, multiple people (Fincher, screenwriter, Freeman) have confirmed the final "I believe the first part" line was a capitulation to the studio to have some sort of ray of light and they consider it to hurt the nihlist message of the movie. The killer is a self-insert of the writer, who had spent years pitching the script while working retail in LA and hated the city.
Evil will hurt you and there's nothing you can do to stop it. The world is terrible anyways. That's the message of the movie. Any attempt to take anything else away is a coping mechanism.
