Bravo Vince
Made it about 10 minutes into this and had to turn it off because it was so horrifically boring. The people that like this are the exact same audience that like The Terror which was also shit.
>muh abominable snowman was great
No it wasn't. Frick off.
Anyways is Shogun any good, and if so how long does it take to start getting good?
Unironically nothing happens
It’s ”good” if you like the idea of watching hours of impotent medieval bureaucracies squabble over petty political disputes and the “drama” that ensues for what could have been summed up in an e-mail. It’s basically “ancient staff meetings: in Japan”.
There’s not enough sword fighting, ninjas, warships, horse archery, or warfare or really any of the cool shit people think about when they think of medieval Japan. Netflix did a docuseries on samurai that takes place during the same period and it was both more educational and more entertaining.
People have compared this to game of thrones but game of thrones at least had interesting build up, memorable characters/character development, world building, politics, and conflicts. Shogun was mostly just thumb twiddling and tea parties and if they intend to draw things out for so long then at least make twice as many episodes.
I honestly don’t really care about what happens in season 2 at this point because I know that it’s probably just gonna be 8 episodes long and be released like 2 years from now, and it’ll probably take several seasons before anything good or cool happens if they stick with the pacing of the first season. It’s essentially a soap opera with swords.
>season 2
homie the story is over, donezo. There is nothing left to tell. I guess they could adapt the rest of the Asia Saga but they wouldn’t call it Shogun.
They might, look at what happened with The Terror
Tai-Pan would be utter kino if they have the rights to adapt that. Just don’t know if there would be enough interest for it
Didn't stop Amazon from greenlitting Good Omens season 2, despite the first season already covering the book and it intended as a mini-series
If there is money to be made, it doesn't matter if there is no source material, the skilled hollywood writers will be able whip something up
Honestly it’d make more sense for them to adapt the rest of the Asian saga as individual seasons. King Rat and Tai-Pan would make for amazing western adapted oriental based stories if they keep the same team from Shogun. Some of them have more action so that would satisfy the battlegays who watch these kinds of series on their phones.
GO season 2 was soooo bad
>Good Omens 2 - we gay now
Amazon also did it with Man In High Castle, the season 1 covers the only book completely, and it still went on for 5 seasons.
>Man In High Castle
Yes but MitHC is a really boring book and the tv series adaption is one of the few instances where the movie/tv show was actually better then the book.
This is NOT the case with Shogun.
Good. It was basically just a waste of time. Too many homies chatting at tea parties and not enough action, sex appeal, autistic military details, or funny gaijin antics. I honestly wouldn’t recommend this show to anyone, it was like a boring, dry, high school handjob with no climax.
>homies chatting at tea partie
People talking isn't the issue, it's the subject matter.
In the prostitute they talk some folk tale for 40 minutes.
He was working on Shogun 2. I'm sure his daughter has the notes and shes a producer on the show.
There won't be a season 2, it's based on a book that was loosely based on a true story and designed as a sort of fish out of water tale and John Blackthorne is supposed to be the audience's anchor and reference point to experience this alien Japanese culture.
Only in this adaptation both John and Toranaga take a backseat to Mariko. The show should have been called Mariko instead of Shogun.
80's version is a lot better if you enjoy these sort of historical dramas, it's only issue is that towards the end it plays up the romance with Mariko too much but at least she isn't some insufferable b***h.
>The show should have been called Mariko instead of Shogun.
It isn't that they expanded her role, her scenes are in the book, it's just that left out most of Anjin and Toranaga out of the story.
It's so distracting when Anjin does nothing when Buntaro returns.
What does he even do in the show?
Far as I remember:
>he saves the Spaniard
>he navigates out of Osaka
>he swims with Toranaga
>he trains the army
>he fricks Mariko
>he makes a deal with Yabu
It's just too little for 10 episodes
What made the show feel limiting to me were the sets. No I don’t mean the different locations but the fact the whole entire show takes place on three or four sets for most of it.
>anjins house
>toranagas estate/encampment
>osaka castle
You can even tell they reuse whole sets for indoor scenes a lot to save on budget. It pulled me out of the experience when I noticed this. It just feels so cheap.
Jew! I see you.
>expecting more out of a high budget production is israeli
Que?
Yes, but it isn't just the budgeting issue, but idiocy.
See, Japan has a whole industry of sengoku dramas, full of nice sets ready to be rented at affordable prices.
So, instead of flying their team to Japan and the film there, what did they do?
They built 3 sets in Canada, while most of their actors live in Japan.
Considering how much production value Japanese movies have compared to their budget, I'd imagine filming Japan is a lot cheaper.
> what are wages
Yeah I'm not sure why they did it this way, regardless of what you think of the show the assets they used and build were VERY well done and authentic, so it couldn't have been cheap, so surely adding some scenes in actual Japan couldn't have been that expensive.
They literally couldn't, it was filmed in 2021 and Japan wasn't letting in production crews. Legitimately all they could do was fly the Japanese crew out.
Oh that makes sense. Unfortunate then, I think it limited the show somewhat. That said a battle never would have happened, it doesn't in the books.
>They literally couldn't, it was filmed in 2021 and Japan wasn't letting in production crews.
Then they should have delayed production of the series because it was stupid to do a show about medieval Japan and have the character strolling around in the woods all the time.
>they reuse whole sets for indoor scenes
Osaka castle so sm0ll Toranaga and Ishido have to plot against each other in the same room
What, you don't think it makes sense that Toranaga camps the entire show in some random fishing village that belongs to his least loyal vassal? Fool!
Anjin is just a minor pawn for Toranaga.
This. He promoted him in order to make the Portuguese think of him as a bigger threat that he is. why re zoomers this braindead?
>season 2
I guarantee this poster thinks he’s above capeshit too
>Netflix did a docuseries on samurai that takes place during the same period and it was both more educational and more entertaining.
Age of Samurai: Battle for Japan. It was pretty kino.
So if there was a big battle where 2 armies ran at each other like half the Marvel movies started doing, it would have been good?
it gets good within the first episode, but stops being good halfway through
>The Terror which was also shit.
>>muh abominable snowman was great
Fans of The Terror say it was great in spite of the monster not because of it
It has good actors (except the main), costumes, even the idea of being heavy on cultural stuff is interesting. But the writing doesn't take off and actors can't carry poorly written material
I enjoyed Episode 1, but the ending of Episode 2 had me hooked.
There's a reason they released 2 episodes the first day and then one per week.
>The Terror which was also shit
>GOOOOOD WHY THE SAMURAIGUY DOESNT UNLOCK THE SUPER SAYAJIN GOD SUPER SAYAYIN BLUE ROSE ULTRA INSTINC SUPER VEGITA GREEN AND PURPLE BESTIA ORANGE FEAT DRAKE AND EMINEM

what show do you like?
Ru Paul's Drag Race, Euphoria, The Masked Singer, you know stuff that's not boring.
your bait is way too obvious anon
Terror was bad but Shogun is good.
>Crimson Sky was simply sending Mariko in to kill herself
That’s the book. It ends ONE SECOND before the big epic battle of salhigahara begins
>This is the great show Cinemaphile has been jizzing itself over
Kek you gays always champion utter shit
The old nasty women when I was in school kept talking about this story, a quick research would have teached you that this was always shitty romance for femcel
>No flashback of Toranaga stumbling upon Ochiba fricking some peasant to secure a child she can pass off as the heir
>She remains an anime villain the entire time
She's exactly the kind of wife you want. Just, you know, don't cross her.
GOD i wish i was that peasant i assume he got offed immediately after?
>Mariko should be in every scene
>Everything happens because of Mariko
>And when she isn't on screen, other characters should be asking "Where is Mariko?"
Remember when the shills INSISTED this wasn't going to end up as some woman-centric feminist slop? I remember.
I laughed, but only because you're right on the money.
more like a premature ejaculation halfway through
>aarrgghhhh where is cgi slop final battle?!
What a shitty ending.
When did you guys realize that Buntaro and Blackthorne are the only good guys in the show after all? For me it was ep 6. And this finale confirms that Toranaga had random villagers beheaded and killed for the lolz.
Toranaga was not any more of a good guy than Ishido. He was just better at playing the game. The truth is that he WAS rebelling and plotting to take the throne all along and was using literally every person in his camp as a disposable pawn to do so. This includes Anjin, his brother, Yabushige, mariko, innocent villagers and even his own son. He was 2 steps ahead of them all and led most of them to their deaths for his own gain. As Yabushige says in their last scene, he is no better than any of the others in his secret heart. He desires power and will get it at any means. He is just the smartest when it comes to obtaining that power. He even kept mariko and Blackthorne together because he knew they had grown close in order to get Blackthorne to stick around. He was playing everyone from the start and manipulating events and people to his favour.
>the throne
i mean the role of shogun ofc. The throne is ceremonial only and Toranaga would be running japan as shogun.
>2 steps ahead
Anon, consistently rolling a d20 and then moronicly claiming you're two steps ahead because everything goes to plan is not actually being two steps ahead.
Toranaga wasnt lucky at all wtf are you on about? How did he roll a d20 with anything? He literally had half of his army wiped out in an earthquake at one point.
He knew his brother would betray him. He knew that Yabushige would betray him. He used both of these things to his advantage. He used mariko & his wife to manipulate the emperors mother and mariko to also destroy any support for Ishido with the other regents. He used mariko to gain favour with the church. His plan was great and worked well because he was 2 steps ahead and knew how others would react to him. His plan with mariko was genius becuse it put Ishido in an lose-lose situation.
he also manipulated events so blackthorne would be loyal to him and want to stay and build him a navy. Not just with the burning of the ship, but with the general treatment of blackthorne from the beginning. Giving him titles and integrating him in to his army. Obviously Blackthorne earned some of this but Toranaga did it all for his own gain. He wanted blackthorne to stay in japan at any cost.
>He knew his brother would betray him
Yeah I bet he also knew his son was gonna try to assassinate him and slip up and die so he can return to Tokio to put the plan in motion kek
Anon there's so much convoluted shit in his "plan" it just gets annoying at some point when you think about it for more than two minutes.
Just as an exercise, can you summarize what exactly crimson sky was? And I don't mean things happening, I mean his actions specifically from the beginning and possible outcomes. THEN you'll understand how moronic the whole thing is
crimson sky was sending mariko to Osaka to surrender as his vassal, knowing that Ishido would attempt to keep her there as prisoner. Ishido was keeping all of the regency there as prisoners so they cant join forces with taranaga or rally any armies/turn against him, which was only being done unofficially but allowing Mariko to leave would quickly have the other regents demanding to leave and turning on Ishido. Killing Mariko or having her commit seppuku would also have the regents turning on him. Mariko went there knowing full well she would probably die.
Also Toranaga even states that his son dying bought him time as he meant he didnt have to go to Osaka right away, but the plan would have been the similar regardless. Toranaga's plan wasnt on the battlefield. It was sowing discontent between the regents and Ishido, including the heirs mother.
His son was such a fricking failure from beginning to end holy shit. Every time he opened his mouth he'd get immediately told to close it by Toranaga. He fricked up by murdering that samurai with canons in an dishonorable way and then dies like a b***h to everyone's laughter.
imagine if he had a daughter instead
frick you his son was moronic but he actually wanted to do something while his father seemingly gave up like a b***h to go and die and have him killed as well. Toranaga should have just shared the information with his son regarding his plan instead of just letting him go and die for nothing. Yabushige's nephew says something similar in the scene after his death while all of the old men are laughing at him. He at least wanted to fight for his cause.
What a fricking brainlet take. Toranaga jr. was the best character on the show other than maybe Buntaro. The scene where Yabu's nephew talks about how much he loved the Way and how much he loved fighting for father and how much he loved being with the other samurai was the best part of the entire season. He's painted out to be incompetent and reckless (which he is) and right when that's all you can think about they dropped the wake scene on us.
So you unironically think ishido still would have lost with Mariko and the other regency leaving, but with the support of the Taiko?
>So you unironically think ishido still would have lost with Mariko and the other regency leaving, but with the support of the Taiko?
Yes because the support of the Taiko and the regency are intertwined. The Taiko would not support or make Ishido's actions lawful if the regency didnt also support it.
Now that's just some advanced cope. Literally the only reason the taiko wasn't there is because marikos bestie withdrew it after she died. This is hammered in several times
The heirs mother withdrew it partially because of mariko but also because she was shown that the lords were being hold hostage in Osaka and that Ishido didnt have support from them. The outcome would have been the same if Mariko had lived.
>The outcome would have been the same if Mariko had lived.
No it wouldn't you brainlet
yes it would. If Mariko was allowed to leave, the regents go back to their feifs and start rebellion, as they have just been kidnapped by Ishido and held hostage. This would be an open rebellion against the shogun. Taiko would either switch sides in order to stop the emperor being murdered along with Ishido or stay out of the conflict as is done in the show.
>Toranaga's plan wasnt on the battlefield. It was sowing discontent between the regents and Ishido, including the heirs mother.
in the book he goes over how he plans to eventually get the heir to rebel so he can get rid of him, ochiba and osaka castle remnants too. as well positioning his younger son to take over his role by training him from a very young age (which is why he's so happy he got a 2nd son and isn't too distraught about losing his older one)
Now that sounds much more like a real plan and not the meme shit that happened in the show kek
it happens after he already won, a lot of the original plan still exists too. it's basically his clean up plan after he becomes shogun
yeah, book makes so much more sense in every fricking aspect, i have no idea why the "writers" decided to be "creative", it's not like they replaced it with anything better or more interesting
>crimson sky was sending mariko to Osaka to surrender as his vassal, knowing that Ishido would attempt to keep her there as prisoner.
No, the Crimson Sky plan was a last ditch suicidal zerg rush on Osaka by every one of Toranaga's troops, who would inevitably fail but die gloriously in the attempt.
The plan Mariko and Toranaga cooked up was done to hopefully avoid having to order Crimson Sky.
ummmm but ackshyually toranaga literally said mariko was the real crimson sky
there's a 2017 Japanese film which depicts Torahomie as the thug and Ishido as the most honorable
>This changed with the 2017 film Sekigahara, which covers the rivalry between Ishida Mitsunari and Tokugawa Ieyasu before leading to the battle itself in the final third of the film. The film is somewhat notable in being a revisionist reassessment, showing Tokugawa more as an antagonist while Mitsunari is a man of honor and the main protagonist.
>Sekigahara
Interesting and well worth watching. There's also a 2019 Netshits documentary - Age of Samurai Battle for Japan - which covers the same historical period and has way more actual history, battle scenes, etc.
He's literally me.
Just like the book kek, 1200 pages of Toranaga trolling
it was pozzed glowie goyslop made by bluepilled women. Zogbots have destroyed society. the east has fallen
Despite being 13% of the population, Minowarans commit 50% of the war crimes
>and then I told her go to Osaka and die for me, a she did it, what a moron hahahaha. Now bring my sword have to kill her best friend and the kid
>woman > army
powerful
Mariko indeed the Jesus of Japan, she died for Toranaga's sins.
Maybe they could make a religion of it. Perhaps, Mariko was the reincarnation of Jesus
It's not about sin (jesus resolved that), it's about obedience to her lord. They way they showed how Catholicism fit into Japanese culture was actually quite good. You got filtered.
Why that 180° on Toranaga's personality and goals? The last episode made no sense
Anon please remember the eightfold fence.
this is why people keep saying 'media literacy'
>yabu literally spells it out
>morons still don't get it
I genuinely hate this board
Literally the first episode they explain that Toranaga has been gobbling up fiefdoms and everything that transpires is because of that. He was always the conniving warlord the council said he was, he was just smarter and much more charismatic than them so he seems heroic
So I should have huge loads by the end of it?
No orgasm I'm afraid
I know 7/10 is sort of a meme but it really is a 7/10
does the novel narrate what happens after the show last episode?
briefly.
Reminder this board is full of pajeets and zoomers, and that's who's complaining that there should have been more anime bullshit.
You're right, there should have been ZERO action. I want nothing but people sitting around talking.
absolute garbage
baited me in with 3 or so interesting episodes and then made me sunk cost fallacy myself through 7 more episodes of mariko talking to the camera, holy shit what a waste of time
genuinely considering watching fallout if this is what Cinemaphile creams themselves over
>genuinely considering watching fallout
have a nice day shitposter
it cant be worse than this
it is. don't use rome for your nonsense ever again
go ahead and make me pussy
you will seppuku the instant you meet any opposition and hope that a woman finishes the job
you are not worthy of the 13th
>it cant be worse than this
KEK
Fallout was unironically better than this. There I said it.
At least I wasn't bored out of my mind with fallout
>genuinely considering watching fallout
do it homosexual
Was his brother betraying him part of the plan? Or is he just undercover?
why did so many anon's get eightfold fence'd by the finale?
So bros what are we watching next? I crave a weekly release show
Dune show maybe, looks kinda interesting.
im going back to anime and old shows for at least like 5 years, nu-meatpig tv is still unwatchable
gonna rewatch pic related between anime episode releases
The Sympathizer is okay. There are some heavy ass moments in the first episode and its still airing weekly. Its directed/written by Park Chan-wook who directed oldboy.
t. squidfricker
lel check out the seethe on the imdb reviews for it.
This guy does know the original novel was written by a Vietnamese guy right?
i honestly liked the show but i'm a huge weeb and the authenticity of a lot of the aspects of the show kept it interesting to me. show felt budget constrained though, as in you could tell they blew most of their budget on the sets.
asian women asian women asian women asian women asian women aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah
>Osaka is a major city
>its surrounded by forests and shitty roads
Just how? Where are the rice farms?
Rice farms are racist you bigot!
Why do japs have such a hard on for NOT showing sekigahara? It's like every time it's just mentioned and it's either the aftermath or the lead up to it but not actual hara of seki.
yeah funnily this isnt just limited to this show, it happens in japanese fiction too lol
the fact he won the battle just because one army didnt show up is moronic
Ieyasu wins in real life because literally one lord changes sides.
From memory what actually happens is that instead of not showing up at all, they turn on Ishida at the start of the battle.
I think the other "main" lords that are depicted in this show also lose and die though
Bro if you think that's moronic the actual battle of Sekigihara will make you shit yourself face palming. Half of Ishido's forces don't show up and half of the ones that do show up switch sides as soon as the attack starts. That's it. That's the battle.
>A man rules Japan for 250 years because a woman kills herself
Japanese history really finna be like that?
There was a 250 year old guy in Japan?
how does sekiro fit into the lore here
The red armored enemy faction you fight in Sekiro (that's weirdly translated as "interior ministry") is Ieyasu's shogunate.
>Getting filtered by niponese
Brainlets.
Who is?
The internet is 50% chinese, who hate Japan and are too autistic to understand storytelling, and 30% indian, who are literally too stupid to understand anything besides poorly choreographed fights and dance numbers.
It's gonna be a lot of filtered seething morons from now on until China and India are nuked or banned from the English-speaking quarters of the internet.
Is there an NHK historical series that goes over Benkei and Yoshitsune?
Is the young girl in this trailer Mariko? Where is John Blackthorne?
?si=LHgnWyR_3J3_2dW2
lel this looks a lot more anime-ish than shogun but might give it a torrent anyway.
The Shogun show really failed to convey the whole west vs east vibe and the country being cut in half yadda yadda.
>Shogun
>Spend all season listening to some White wiener finding slant b***h about her problems
>Get one scene with Toranaga and the other regents

>Zero attention is given to art outside of one scene with Buntaro pouring tea
>Zero attention is given to The Way of The Samurai outside of Buntaro beastmoding an entire army
>Zero attention is given to martial prowess outside of Buntaro's archery scene
>Buntaro is the only person in the show who isn't disloyal, cowardly, weak, lecherous, unfaithful or undisciplined
>He's still made out to be a fricking doormat for some feminist power fantasy cuckold fetish
>People praise this shit
>Last 4 episodes are waiting for Crimson Sky
>It happens off screen in the future
4/10 and I'm not memeing. I loved the first episode (except for the filter) but after that it gets progressively worse.
Half of these are just wrong. Stop checking your phone while watching a show.
>Half of these are just wrong
Which ones are wrong?
>>The only aspect of Bushido we see
Bushido literally didn't exist yet. Samurai did have expectations of honor and loyalty in this time period, but nobody used the word "bushido" to describe them. The concept of bushido was invented in the 1800s by pooling together various treatises, mostly from the Edo period, about proper samurai behavior and values. Most of those writings were also written after this show takes place.
Being a weeb is a form of mental illness. Disregard all japslop. You won't missing anything worth watching. There hasn't been a single piece of media produced about, or by, japan, that wasn't shit.
I admit, I did expect a battle. But it was good nonetheless.
This show needed way more of the banter between Anjin and that Spaniard.
Only thing this show needed was more yellow pussy
>Catholic Spaniard, protestant Inglés and Japanese girl who wants to be a nun travel through Japan solving mysteries
I'd pay for that
Don't know why but I was filled with unspeakable rage every time that little rat appeared on screen. Maybe I just hate Catholics.
>Tsuji, did I ever tell you about Mariko? She committed adultery right before she died, so according to your theology she is now in hell. She was a good friend.
>Anjin, she wasn't married by a Catholic priest therefore their union wasn't acknowledged by Jesus
What does catholic mythology say about sex without marriage though?
It's very satisfying, specially if she swallows
Marriage is a sacrament that doesn't require a priest, only the consent of the man and woman. Pagan marriages are still true marriages.
Sacramental marraiges require a priest. Non sacramental "natural marriages" do not.
>There hasn't been a single piece of media produced about, or by, japan, that wasn't shit.

Lone Wolf and Cub manga if you can ignore how many times it's been ripped off
8/10, some episodes were really boring and didn’t add much.
>some episodes were really boring
>Some
Most tbh.
If I think back on the show only the first 1-2 episodes are memorable and the brother arriving. I unironically don't remember much of anything that happened in-between
Black thorne doesn't appear to care about his family back home in England lmao
Can you blame him?
What yellow fever does to a homie
>No mayor battle
>No naval battle
>Just “Ochiba support Toranaga now”, Ishido you have been defeated LOL
Frick this show
Did cities in the Japans elect mayors?
A goon made from the finest Nipponese 1000 time folded over edging
tfw no qt jap gf that talks like an anime antagonist
I wonder if Toranaga raped her before killing her
Not gonna lie, the final episode was disappointing as hell.
I can understand they don't have the budget for a big battle, but couldn't they at least have shown Ishido committing seppuku after the battle?
Also, I kinda hate this depiction of Tokugawa Ieyasu (Torenaga), "I'm just a helpless victim. I just have to overthrow the regents"
But that wasn't how he was depicted at all...
>Also, I kinda hate this depiction of Tokugawa Ieyasu (Torenaga), "I'm just a helpless victim. I just have to overthrow the regents
Based moron
>I can understand they don't have the budget for a big battle
which is funny because a hoopla was made about it being FX's biggest budget show ever.
They probably spent their budget on the 3 sets they constructed.
Which is fair I guess, those are nice sets and all, but constructing them in Canada was completely unnecessary.
Japanese dramas look the same quality and have fraction of the budget

Show went to shit once it stopped focusing on the fun conniving men and focused on the mopey women. When the FRICK will they learn!?
The story is about Anjin/John Blackthorne but they wanted political intrigue of the Japanese at the forefront. Shogun is about that in a roundabout way, like how the 13th Warrior is about Beowulf in a roundabout way.
I wanted my gaijin swordsman/gun-toting samurai goddamn it.
Barbarians are never Japanese. No matter how ingratiated to Japanese society and culture, you are always an outsider. Always.
Japs ARE the barbarians that's the irony. Imagine showing up to this backward island on the opposite side of the world, 400 years behind you in tech, and all the savages call YOU the barbarian.
"tech" maybe, but they sure as frick behave and dress far better londonians
They wear fricking bathrobes, have you seen how sophisticated 17th century European fashion is? They were behind the west in tech, culture, and the whole 9 yards.
>doctor that actually prescribes something that resembles medicine with proper active ingredients. instead of leeches and blood letting
>barbarians.
Exactly.

Yabushige would have loved it.
shit if they didn't follow the books after ep4 this show could've been 10/10
They already deviated quite a lot, half the deaths didn't happen in the book and real events
Shogun? More like SHOW OVER!
dogshit, market the whole thing as a war show and set the stage from the first minute of the show then there's nothing of the sort, you can count the action scenes in the whole show one hand
The ol feminism bait and switch strikes yet again
Great show overall, but episodes 5-7 just felt like they dragged on with nothing happening
80's version remains superior, Anjin's much more active character, the Catholics-side of the plot isn't dropped after 3 episodes, and the scenes have more variety than "grey sky", "grey sky, raining", and "dark indoors"
>she did JAV
He did MEN.
>when method acting goes too far
Toranaga really just said he kept anjin around for shit and giggles
Is that why he went as far as beheading villagers
Toranaga sucks... honestly the worst character in the show. I can't root for someone so cruel, soulless, and shitty. Especially for no reason.
That was pretty weird. Not even “I want to use him to gain naval power” which makes more sense
He tells him to build him a fleet, so he clearly is using him for that. Him boasting that he didn't need him was just that. Boasting that he could've done it without him when he obviously couldn't have. Blackthorn personally saves him more than once, and his ship was a bargaining chip or deterrent more than once. He just didn't want to give him any credit. He's also talking to a dead man and a traitor, he didn't want to give any credit to anything Yabushige had a hand in. He was just meant to be used.
Well Toranaga was always a lord and doesn't give a shit, it's funny because in a western story Ishido would've been the protagonist. He came from poverty and was a commoner, he only ever truly grows incensed when someone insults him with that, otherwise he was little more than a relatively calm ruler legitimately trying to maintain his own position. He even honored things he could've easily not, like giving Toranags 40 days after his own son attempted to assassinate his brother. Ishido could've easily accused Toranaga of orchestrating that and used it to kill him prematurely. I think it's part of the culture clash aspect. Ishido is more of what a western protagonist would be, comes from nothing, rises beyond his station. But this is Japan, where people like Toranaga pretty much always win.
>it's funny because in a western story
Shogun is a western story
Sure, it was written by a westerner, but the whole show is about their culture being totally different from ours. If this were a show written about European culture the Ishido equivalent would more likely be the protagonist IMO. Blackthorn is repeatedly horrified by how they treat each other, it's all about that culture clash.
True. But also, I suspect there was an intention of a twist behind the story, in that the protagonist is revealed to have helped the villain win. Mostly because he lacked the context and freedom to choose otherwise. It sucks, but such is life.
Well Ishido is responsible partially for that one. He makes several mistakes and just isn't as clever as Toranaga when it comes to their little games, which also makes sense because he wasn't raised in it. He wasn't born into his position. But Ishido could've also not immediately written Blackthorn off so hard, instead he basically wants to kill him the entire time. If he'd played ball with Blackthorn better, he'd have routed Toranaga when he tried to leave disgusted as a woman, and Blackthorn wouldn't have been there to dig Toranaga out of the landslide.
Am I too fricked up if I feel like I would totally pillow that lady who delivered the letter to toranaga at the end? I think it's his mother?
it's his main b***h
asian parlor mamas have their charms
He said in the book and in the series he liked his wives and consorts ugly, less worry about stranger danger in the bedroom or while away. Save the pretty ones for geisha houses.
Smart man. There is a great sense of security in having a woman who does not catch the attention of every other man and does not have endless options.
No, all women exist to be fricked, nothing wrong with a 5/10.
Needed more WMAF mating press scenes
>Toranaga's master strategy is just telling a lie, every time
>Mariko is an obnoxious, unlikeable poet with an uninteresting backstory and an unconvincing (and inconsistent) love story
>John's actor was so bad that they had to demote him to a supporting character role and have him most not be allowed to speak
>pointless feminist prostitute side quest
>director was mad that everybody loved Fuji more than his waifu Mariko so he had Fuji randomly become a nun in the final episode for no reason at all
>final Toranaga scene has him break the 4th wall by saying that John contributes nothing and that he keeps him around as a joke
superfans are missing that this was social commentary, the creators HATE weebs and white saviourbros and used Shogun as a platform to tease you, I'm fairly sure that they actually hate the source material and history regarding Will Adams. They didn't want a Japanese story to be told through a white man's lens
The ending was intended to be an insult directed at you
>director was mad that everybody loved Fuji more than his waifu Mariko so he had Fuji randomly become a nun in the final episode for no reason at all
Who did? Viewers? This was filmed in 2021
How does it compare to the original?
Original good
Nu one shit
It’s basically 100% from Blackthornes perspective. Takes a lot of liberty with the way the story is told and presented but is underlooked kino. I expect a lot of anons will be checking it out and comparing now that the shows over.
>How does it compare to the original?
The 1980 version is better.
Do you really expect an answer other than old good new bad?
This show did a poor job of showing or justifying why Toronaga wanted Blackthorne around and why he would refuse to let him ever leave. There is also very little to their relationship, and zero reason for Blackthorne to like, care about, or respect him for. Would have made more sense for Anjin to just shoot Toronaga in the head after the story we just watched.
>There is also very little to their relationship, and zero reason for Blackthorne to like, care about, or respect him for.
Not one of the character relationships in this series makes any sense. It is one of the most poorly written pieces of media I have seen in recent years.
Maybe we overlook the writing failures because they are speaking Japanese, if the cast was all speaking English this would be insufferable and the flaws would be more obvious to normies.
good thing there were subtitles then
The show had no focus it was all over the place. Started out interesting but it got worse over time with shit like
also how come the whole shipcrew gets just one random scene towards the end, are they just chilling in Edo now forever ?
Felt to me like they transplanted the friendship between Anjin and Toranaga in the book to Anjin and Yabushige in the show. Which makes it a really bad ending.
>This show did a poor job of showing or justifying why Toronaga wanted Blackthorne around
he proved useful multiple time
>just shoot the most powerful man in Japan
can't remember the last time I've seen so many midwits in one thread
What wife do you think Johnny boy got? Do you think she was better or worse than Mariko/Fuji
Unless he gave Kiku a BWC addiction so bad that she left her prostitute life behind to serve him for the rest of his days, then there's no fricking way he didn't do worse than Mariko or Fuji. Not to say she's better, just the only women left at the end of the same calibre
Ochiba should’ve been humiliated and Toranaga shoouldve made her Anjin wife
“The Freak from the west” and The prostitute queen
One taste of BWC and that quickly stops being a punishment for Ochiba
I agree, except me instead of Anjin.
yabushige-sama!
HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
yabushige-sama!
HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
yabushige-sama!
HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
yabushige-sama!
HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
There’s something about Blackthornes actor I dont like… he sometimes does that stupid puppy eye face
If I was Anjin I would be hitting up every brothel for the sole purpose of spreading my seed raw nutting in everyone and everything until my penis falls off
That would happen pretty quickly they were full of stds
And the sequel would be called Blue Eyed Samurai
Asian women were at the bottom of my list. Now they’re above white women (second to last). What do?
Frick one and get over it.
Mariko wanted to die because she knew it was impossible for her to marry BWClackthorne
so mariko = jesus right? she sacrificed herself for the wellbeing of japan
does asiannmasculinity like the show?
What?
>The whole thread is people complaining that the show is missing a big battle that didn't happen in the book nor irl
It's a shame that the poster counter got removed
>big battle
>didn't happen irl
moron
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Sekigahara
The book literally ends as the battle begins.
>Ishida gets abandoned by his allies and the battle ends
wow, literally like in the finale of the show
Wrong again, moron-kun.
The scene in the show was just Toranaga dreaming and hoping for an easy and clean victory. In reality, it was an extremely bloody battle, followed by months of warfare before he "won".
Forces changing sides did happen, and bloody or not, the battle was quick. Ishida was on the run for like a couple days but he was captured. Some dude knocked Musashi and Matahachi down at some point.
good thing it's not a reality show then
Are there seriously people who say this is better? Do people just shitpost for reactions or something?
the new show is universally praised so Cinemaphile is in it's usual contrarian phase
With a ruined orgasm at the end
I enjoyed it but I’ll admit the ending felt a bit underwhelming, the last two episodes should have been combined into one.
As beautiful as this show is, nothing fricking happens. These fricking nips don't do anything but talk and kill themselves. I like their landscaping but holy shit do they need furniture. Imagine sleeping on a wooden floor every night. You would probably want to have a nice day as well. They are the "you won't do shit" people of the world. All they do is sit on uncomfortable wrestling mats, drink tea, and talking until someone gets offended and commits suicide. Their poetry is this pretentious garbage about nothing. "They are called flowers because they fall." What the frick is that supposed to mean even? The fricker with the biggest army is this little 8 year old writing poems about trees having fruit and flowers on them. John Blackthorne is this peak giggachad Englishman that should be starting a plantation somewhere in America with african slave labor while drinking rum from Spanish skulls but instead he's become this total weeb that suddenly doesn't give a shit about his mission anymore. King Nip with the plans within plans is not even clever, everything that happens is just luck going his way and his vassals suck his dick for it. He's just a psychopath that loves to sacrifice everyone around him including his son so that he can be least cucked lord. He's imagining some battle in the future and here we are at episode 10 and it's like wow thanks for wasting my time for an entire season.
Is it beautiful? It's one of the most boring looking shows i have seen recently.
AYOOOOO POGGERS MY LORD ALLOWED ME TO BECOME A NUN AFTER SANCTIONING THE EXECUTION OF MY HUSBAND AND INFANT CHILD AND WHORING ME TO A FOREIGNER
BEST NUN
He just told her she can and should kill herself because her duty to him is done. The nun thing is her lying to Anjin so he won't worry.
It gets better.
>conspire with some dude to have your mutual master murdered
>as soon as it's done instantly turn on said dude and call him a traitor and have his entire lineage executed
>except for the daughter which you keep as your personal errand girl and prostitute her out to a savage until she gets attached to him, then makes sure she is there to watch while you assign a courtesan to said savage to frick, and ultimately just has the daughter kill herself to further his goals
Just shogun things.
I wish moeka best of luck in elevating her career after this. or she can just marry me and not have a career. either way is fine
>plebs didnt switch to Portuguese everytime someone started speaking English for maximum immersion
I watched without subtitles. Including the Jap parts.
The trick is to watch the portuguese dub since the dubs only change the when people speak english, the jap isn't changed
Horrendously frontloaded with no comfyness to carry you through to the end.
Blue filter killed most of the comfy, stilted conversations killed off the rest.
Vancouver/10
after the episode with the canon scene, felt like everything just slowed down to a crawl that episode. was mostly just blackthorne trying to frick mariko and then it just fricking ends.
>muh books
maybe adapt it better, and then they fricking blue ball us by showing us the battle but not actually playing it. very little conflict with the Portuguese or catholics, its basically the mariko show. meh what disappointing finish.
Feels like a waste
There was pretty good quality all around with the cast and acting, the era is interesting, but the plot and characters are just going nowhere
Why did they choose to adapt an old movie instead of doing their own take on Adam's journey
I checked out of the show in that canon scene where the nips get their minds blown that a canon can hit a target at bow and arrow range and exclaimed the Portuguese tried it years ago and couldn't do it. Muh British Naval Warfare had to come along for it to be possible.
LindyBeige tier Bong wank homosexualry
Seething
u wot
its literally a plot point from the book, moron
Also, as a matter of historical FACT, Portuguese didn't give good cannons to their native trading partners, because if they did that they could use them against them.
I know it's from the book you moron, read the image title.
Historical fact you just pulled out of your ass? Portuguese merchants had no qualms selling their canons to Japan just like they did their guns. Portuguese canons were the ones being used in Japanese battles, Ieyasu bought all the ones he could get his hands on. There was never enough of them to make a huge difference because unlike guns, Japan did not have the technology or resources to make them themselves and adopt artillery as an integral doctrine in their warfare.
the bots aren't even pleased with reviews calling ep 10 a masterpiece because it's not a positive enough review
They should've made the final episode all about the battle. It doesn't matter if its not in the books. You can't just blue ball the audience. They already made too many changes that there is no point trying to be accurate to the book.
Yea they cheapest out
no grandiose battle for people who want LOTR scale
rather underwhelming scheming/politics, compared to the good years of GOT
it just doesn't do anything well enough to be great - it's just a fine series that doesn't try to overstay its welcome
>show tries to look based by not forcing any diversity hires
>its a subtle feminist piece instead, spending hours on women's bullshit barely relevant to the main plot
Yea they bamboozled me with the first couple of episodes. But its just more modern day garbage. Thats probably why it was greenlit, showrunners made it clear it would focus on a bunch of prostitutes and not really be about the warlords of Japan fighting it out.
Damn you troglodites got filtered hard.
Go back to plebbit
Any other shows where everyone just sits around talking and politicking and nothing happens?
Dune
10 hours of reading boring as frick subtitles
So why was the finest prostitute in izu located a 5 minute walk from bumfrick, bumfrick fishing village?
I was under the impression that she came there temporarily from kyoto or something because that's where Toranaga was staying because his vassal lord's fief was located near the village.
it was a great show, but most importantly it had zero Black folk, which made it more watchable than 99% of anything else released in the west recently
ay cracca my nigguh yasuke AKA oda nobunigguh's right hand man is getting his own show
jap b***hes finna be getting dat bbc from a real samurai nigguh
yasuke was a Black person slave and buttboy for japanese homosexuals
the first Black person in japan was a broken buck and took nip wiener in his ape hole
they put him in a dress and made him sit around and jerk off tiny nip wieners, then killed him when his lord died, since the novelty of buck bussy got old
cope cracca
we was samurais before you
we was fuccin japanese b***hes before you
AYOO DAS RITE BRUTHA PREACH
WE homieS BUILT JAPAN ITS IN DA BOOKS
>Yasuke was the first foreign-born warrior to enter their ranks. He belonged to “the very small entourage around Nobunaga, which [was] probably around 30 to 50 [warriors], mainly young men, many of [whom were Nobunaga’s] lovers as well,”
Yasuke was a gay Black person buttslave.
Toranaga searching for the ones who scuttled the Anjin’s ship:
Explains why soys like it so much
fun fact: no japanese have african DNA that doesn't come from before the 1900's
This means that while Black folk were in japan since 1400's in a limited sense, all half blood offspring were killed. All of them. For 500 years, every single mixed Black person baby was killed.
Either that, or Black folk were castrated when they arrived in japan, which was probably more likely.
The chances of 'Yasuke' being a castrated buttboy for his feudal lord is quite high. Certainly more realistic than the pop-culture representation as a 'samurai'.
That's very interesting. How do we know it's true?
>"I dont want to be shogun"
>Gets everyone close to him killed
>Burns ship
>"Haha I actually did want to be shogun"
>I DUN WAN IT
it's almost like he was lying
>"Mr. Toranaga, what is your master plan?"
>"I'll pretend to be a pathetic pussy while my friends and family around me get killed (completely due to my own fault) then send some random ass woman who magically by an asspull resolves the situation"
Ah yes, the 500iq masterplan
Im surprised the hack showrunners didn't shove in something about Mariko going in being her idea in the first place.
if people didn't realize, Yabushigue is the main protagonist in this one
I just saw the finale. I liked it. But now what do I watch? Do not suggest Fallout, I already saw it. Any more good shows out there? Or Should I just watch some anime or perhaps Late Night with the Devil?
The three kingdoms
Here's your cinematography, bro.
not blue enough
True
W
I specifically looked for these nogs to see if they get the finale. Very predictably, they though it doesn't make sense for Anjin to let go of the rosary unless it's a different one from the one we see in "flash-forward". Nogs never disappoint.
nogs can't into abstract thinking
And you end up with blue balls the size of Neptune.
When does season 2 come out?
I decided to start listening to the show's podcast, but only the episodes with Cosmo. You can tell the female host is incredibly put-off by him and is trying to hurry him along whenever he speaks. You can even slightly hear her say, "Oh, come on," when he's giving a long-winded explanation about something. He's completely fricking based.
lol i slightly got that feel too listening to the ep10 podcast. but the emili yoshi(?) whatever the host's name is, she just sounds annoying. and
pronounce "-ing" to "-in" and it bothered me.
and he really is so unpolished and raw and it's so refreshing.
Which ones is he in and which ones is Anna in?
The woman who hosts the podcast and was clearly frustrated by him is the same staff writer who wrote this poem. She's 38 years old, unmarried, and has no children.
>Mariko Show
What a waste of time.
>son slips and falls, dying in the most jabroni sort of way
> his super special awesome samurai/translator/Mary, mother of Jesus vassal blows up
>terrorizes his moronic peasant village
>"Heh...Crimson Sky is going all according to *keikaku"
>*keikaku means getting buried in a landslide
No climax because this was a slow painful denutting of white men
