It was a fun little romp with some interesting decisions that is mainly controversial because it seemed like it meant to replace the OG Grendizer. Now that it amounted to basically nothing you can stop being angry about it and just consider it Grendizer's Z Mazinger or something.

Grendizer doesn't have to feel like a part of Mazinger series. Anime was made by Getter team and it shows. Manga was an afterthought, just like every Nagai's TV Magazine series and other anime tie-ins. Koji wasn't supposed to be in it in the first place.
Grendizer was made after the original sequel to Great Mazinger was scrapped (it was called god mazinger too).
Nagai brought his movie Uchu Enban Daisenso and modified it to be part of Mazinger universe by changing the robot and adding Koji.
And Getter Go was made after original Mazinger reboot was scrapped, is it a part of Mazinger series now too?

the difference is that Grendizer has Koji, and a flash segment where it shows Mazinger Z, and Boss Borot appearing in 2 episodes and mentioning both Z and Great Mazinger, while Getter Go has nothing shared with the older shows.

Fujos on other hand love Grendizer and Koji x Duke. It's one of the shows that kickstarted the movement in the first place.
The real reason is that it's not Mazinger, even if it was advertised as a sequel. Well, that and Uncle Go wanting to establish Grendizer as it's own separate thing. That's the main reason he bothered with making up new-ish characters for Giga, instead of doing the thing he usually does with his AUs.
While I do think that it's a bit misguided, I understand the sentiment.

What's the correct stance about Grendizer? I like Z and love Great and want to like Grendizer. I wish all three were treated as reliable allies that can put up their own in a fight, and not just playing second fiddle to anyone else. But I don't want them be in isolated worlds, or necessarily share a world with the nightmare that is the Getter universe. I want all my robot friends to be okay.
Grendizer is the 3rd and last chapter of Toeizinger trilogy.
Grendizer fights alongsize Z and Great in multiple mangas like Grendizer Gosaka Ota version, Dynamic Superobot Wars, Dynamic Heroes, Super Robot Retsuden, and Mazinger Angels.
Anyone who says Grendizer isn't a mazinger or isn't canon OR Nagai didn't want it to be part of Mazinger is a fool. it's included in Mazinger Bible as a mainline entry too.
It's the part of Nagai/Toei/Bandai/FujiTV's super robot trilogy, but a separate IP from Mazinger.
