That's the main thing most fantasy and D&D get wrong. They always shove barbarians in the warrior class. They're cooler as rogues. Maybe the most warrior like, but still rogues.

moronic take. People came out with concept that define different magic (priest vs wizard), add and remove (say less, armor, but berzerk rage for the barbarian) or mix (paladin is a bit priest, a bit fighter).
I understand you are an autistic OSRgay, but you should let people play a concept without burdening the same class with too much shit.

Barbarians are basically panthers. Quiet, fast, deadly, and extremely strong. They should have survival skills and toughness. They should be lacking in social graces and distrustful of city life and it’s trappings

are you insane? in the books he beats a monkey man to death with his bare hands and survives 50 men attacking him in an enclosed room with his a broken knife. it's stressed over and over again how he can overcome enemies with his incredible strength. he's a thief in the context that he gets the virgin or some treasure at the end.

His fighting prowess is not what's being debated. In the narratives he is always a thief (before he becomes a king). Always he is stealing or leading bands of thieves or sneaking into palaces. That's the standard Conan narrative.

Conan's prowess was always that he was a savage man unleashed unto a civilization which serves as a breeding ground for weak men, both physically and morally. Conan stories were always an ode about primitivism and how civilized men lost their way and grew sick. That we should all go back to monkey.

Yeah pretty much. My favorite demonstration of this is the beginning of Queen of the Black Coast, where a soldier is being sentenced to death for killing an officer. The officer was going to rape his woman, so he was killed, and Conan was called to witness. When the judge says that the soldier will still be found guilty even though the officer was threatening his woman, Conan kills the judge, escapes, and runs to the docks to commandeer a ship by jumping his horse on it. It's very based.

              Anonymous

Don't forget that he also told the Judge he refused to testify because it would hurt someone who was his friend. That's the most based part.

Before becoming a thief he was a warrior who fought in Cimmeria and Vanahem, after thieving he becomes a mercenary, a bandit, a warlord, a tracker, and a king. He was always a fighter.

No shit. Neither Doom nor his father were correct about the riddle of steel.

Nah, Doom was substantially correct, and as far as the film was concerned, Conan's father was completely wrong. Without Conan's true companions he would have been dead; it isn't really a stretch to view this kind of unwavering loyalty as the strength and power of flesh.

          Anonymous

          no.

just look at some of the quotes
          >"that which does not kill us makes us stronger."
          >"the gods forgot the secret of steel and left it on the battlefield. We who found it are just men. Not gods. The secret of steel has always carried with it a mystery. You must learn its riddle, Conan. You must learn its discipline." (his dad)
          >"Steel isn’t strong, boy. Flesh is stronger! That is strength, boy! That is power! What is steel compared to the hand that wields it? Look at the strength in your body, the desire in your heart." (doom)
          >condemned to the wheel of pain and tree of woe
the point is very obviously that overcoming adversity, tenaciously standing against overwhelming odds, and relying on yourself. the riddle of steel/secret of steel is referencing how steel itself is made and saying you yourself are the steel, made stronger and more disciplined by fighting through higher and higher temperatures.
conan comes to understand this praying to crom, that he will be made stronger for fighting against terrible odds and that if nobody else- not even the gods- will help him, whatever, do it himself.

it's not quite the nietzschean idea that will overpowers everything, more like being strong enough to persevere through any hardship and learn from it.

            Anonymous

except yes, when he causes the cultist girl to jump to her death
            >THAT is strength, boy! THAT is power! The strength and power of flesh
I'm not saying Doom had it exactly, because he didn't; unbreakable sworn loyalty to a friend is not the same thing as the fanaticism of a worshipper, but both are examples of the power of flesh. Again, Conan would simply have been dead on the Tree of Woe if he had not cultivated some true friends willing to endure hardship and supernatural threats to save him. Sole reliance on oneself is not sufficient; that is what gets him nailed to the tree in the first place.

              Anonymous

maybe the real riddle were the friends we made along the way

you laugh, but it really is part of the equation
                >"No. it would only lead me back here another day...in even worse company"
                >"All that matters is that two stood against many; that's what's important"

              Anonymous

What gets him nailed to the tree is pretending to be someone he's not. Trying to infiltrate thulsa dooms place by pretending to be a worthless dirty hippie is not being his true self.
It's not until Conan says frick it and attacks thulsa doom directly like a warrior would, that he fulfills his destiny and gets his revenge.

            >the riddle of steel/secret of steel is referencing how steel itself is made and saying you yourself are the steel, made stronger and more disciplined by fighting through higher and higher temperatures.

I think something people miss about this scene is that Conan's father is talking about something he forged himself. A big theme of this movie is that Conan shapes his character through the movie, going from someone who basically only does what he is told to by his slaves into someone who is in control of his own destiny.

Just saying "will is stronger than steel" is not a satisfactory answer, because a weak will can still be subjugated by steel and flesh (hence why so many were under Thulsa Doom's control). You need to look beyond the sword; man needs to forge his will just like a blacksmith forges his tools, that is the secret of steel.

That’s the riddle of steel. What is the steel compared t9 the hand that wields it. His father wasn’t wrong, but only gave a part of the answer. Strength is a combination of flesh, willpower, and the steel that one may wield.

Between the time when the oceans drank Atlantis and the rise of the sons of Aryas, there was an age undreamed of. And unto this, Conan, destined to wear the israeliteeled crown of Aquilonia upon a troubled brow. It is I, his chronicler, who alone can tell thee of his saga. Let me tell you of the days of high adventure!

Conan is not European High Fantasy lmao. It's an amalgamation of all ancient civilizations including European, Mediterranean, North African, Egyptian, Persian, Arabic, and Indian.

don't forget the Mongols, and Conan being painted with symbols to keep the spirits from taking him is an obvious nod to Kwaidan, which is Japanese

Nigs were in a lot of the original Conan stories. They were only there to be incompetent secondary villains, but they were there.

Nah. The films pale in comparison and arnie is nowhere near the same as book conan. Film conan is stupid. Book conan is cunning. Film conan is unlucky. Book conan thrives thanks to luck. It was a shitty interpretation and a dishonour to howards works.

REH's Conan would be a slave for about as long as it took for him to find a way to break his bonds and kill his captors.

        Anonymous

        >Film conan is stupid.
He's not. He's quiet, and while he was a dumb brute while he was a slave he slowly became more cunning once he was set free.
        >Film conan is unlucky.
        Fair.

I think that while it's not the most valid interpretation it's still a good one. Cona is a warrior who thrives because he is a barbarian and not part of civilisation which is the entire point of the Conan books. I am pointedly ignoring Conan the Destroyer here.

    >I have never had so much as now. All my life, I've been alone. Many times I've faced my death with no one to know. I would look into the huts and the tents of others in the coldest dark and I would see figures holding each other in the night. But I always passed by. You and I, we have warmth. That's so hard to find in this world. Please, let someone else pass by in the night. Let us take the world by the throat and make it give us what we desire.

Impressive stuff. I obviously knew he was the slave guy who took him and made him a warrior, but didn't notice the connection from childhood. And the real reason he sets him free is very compelling.

He groomed conan to be a valuable tool to sell off, but midway through he realised that he had not created a warrior but a man worthy of being a king. He could not in good conscience keep a king a slave, so he set him free.

    cowards ruin everything.
if all men followed a code of ethics and never diverted from it, we would have everything in working order.
imagine if nobody feared conflict because, as a group, we would defend and support each other in public instead of filming fights for clout.
social mirroring theory supports the idea that we gravitate towards people we respect and admire, we try to emulate them because we see their success.
if more genuinely good men were active in public, not screaming about political shit, but just going around helping and supporting people when they get time, the west would turn into the most successful and productive society on earth.
it's a snowball effect that starts with just one man. teach your kids to be that man. not to win an argument, just because how fricking amazing it would be to raise a king amongst the shit, your son would be a leader, born to fix society just by existing.
