Conan has always been a thief. It's based on the 30's short stories, not DnD you fricking idiot. Real the God in the Bowl, the Tower of the Elephant, etc.
That's the main thing most fantasy and D&D get wrong. They always shove barbarians in the warrior class. They're cooler as rogues. Maybe the most warrior like, but still rogues.
>mages can't wear armor because.... they just can't! >rogues can't use warrior weapons..... they just can't! >warriors can't use spells .... they just can't! >barbarians can't do anything .... they just can't!
And that's just modern rpgs, old school DnD had way more restrictions fricking BG1-1 was hell to play beyond fighter/wizard
>Barbarian shouldn’t be a class in the first place.
moronic take. People came out with concept that define different magic (priest vs wizard), add and remove (say less, armor, but berzerk rage for the barbarian) or mix (paladin is a bit priest, a bit fighter).
I understand you are an autistic OSRgay, but you should let people play a concept without burdening the same class with too much shit.
Barbarians are basically panthers. Quiet, fast, deadly, and extremely strong. They should have survival skills and toughness. They should be lacking in social graces and distrustful of city life and it’s trappings
are you insane? in the books he beats a monkey man to death with his bare hands and survives 50 men attacking him in an enclosed room with his a broken knife. it's stressed over and over again how he can overcome enemies with his incredible strength. he's a thief in the context that he gets the virgin or some treasure at the end.
His fighting prowess is not what's being debated. In the narratives he is always a thief (before he becomes a king). Always he is stealing or leading bands of thieves or sneaking into palaces. That's the standard Conan narrative.
His fighting prowess is not what's being debated. In the narratives he is always a thief (before he becomes a king). Always he is stealing or leading bands of thieves or sneaking into palaces. That's the standard Conan narrative.
Conan's prowess was always that he was a savage man unleashed unto a civilization which serves as a breeding ground for weak men, both physically and morally. Conan stories were always an ode about primitivism and how civilized men lost their way and grew sick. That we should all go back to monkey.
Yeah pretty much. My favorite demonstration of this is the beginning of Queen of the Black Coast, where a soldier is being sentenced to death for killing an officer. The officer was going to rape his woman, so he was killed, and Conan was called to witness. When the judge says that the soldier will still be found guilty even though the officer was threatening his woman, Conan kills the judge, escapes, and runs to the docks to commandeer a ship by jumping his horse on it. It's very based.
Before becoming a thief he was a warrior who fought in Cimmeria and Vanahem, after thieving he becomes a mercenary, a bandit, a warlord, a tracker, and a king. He was always a fighter.
That's the main thing most fantasy and D&D get wrong. They always shove barbarians in the warrior class. They're cooler as rogues. Maybe the most warrior like, but still rogues.
Goddamn, those god-tier stats! >STR still at 18/?? at 70 y.o. >INT already at 12 at 15 y.o. and always growing till Conan hits 50 >WIS always growing, from 8 to 15
Conan won at the lottery of life.
No shit. Neither Doom nor his father were correct about the riddle of steel.
Nah, Doom was substantially correct, and as far as the film was concerned, Conan's father was completely wrong. Without Conan's true companions he would have been dead; it isn't really a stretch to view this kind of unwavering loyalty as the strength and power of flesh.
just look at some of the quotes >"that which does not kill us makes us stronger." >"the gods forgot the secret of steel and left it on the battlefield. We who found it are just men. Not gods. The secret of steel has always carried with it a mystery. You must learn its riddle, Conan. You must learn its discipline." (his dad) >"Steel isn’t strong, boy. Flesh is stronger! That is strength, boy! That is power! What is steel compared to the hand that wields it? Look at the strength in your body, the desire in your heart." (doom) >condemned to the wheel of pain and tree of woe
the point is very obviously that overcoming adversity, tenaciously standing against overwhelming odds, and relying on yourself. the riddle of steel/secret of steel is referencing how steel itself is made and saying you yourself are the steel, made stronger and more disciplined by fighting through higher and higher temperatures.
conan comes to understand this praying to crom, that he will be made stronger for fighting against terrible odds and that if nobody else- not even the gods- will help him, whatever, do it himself.
it's not quite the nietzschean idea that will overpowers everything, more like being strong enough to persevere through any hardship and learn from it.
except yes, when he causes the cultist girl to jump to her death >THAT is strength, boy! THAT is power! The strength and power of flesh
I'm not saying Doom had it exactly, because he didn't; unbreakable sworn loyalty to a friend is not the same thing as the fanaticism of a worshipper, but both are examples of the power of flesh. Again, Conan would simply have been dead on the Tree of Woe if he had not cultivated some true friends willing to endure hardship and supernatural threats to save him. Sole reliance on oneself is not sufficient; that is what gets him nailed to the tree in the first place.
maybe the real riddle were the friends we made along the way

you laugh, but it really is part of the equation >"No. it would only lead me back here another day...in even worse company" >"All that matters is that two stood against many; that's what's important"
What gets him nailed to the tree is pretending to be someone he's not. Trying to infiltrate thulsa dooms place by pretending to be a worthless dirty hippie is not being his true self.
It's not until Conan says frick it and attacks thulsa doom directly like a warrior would, that he fulfills his destiny and gets his revenge.
>the riddle of steel/secret of steel is referencing how steel itself is made and saying you yourself are the steel, made stronger and more disciplined by fighting through higher and higher temperatures.
Worth noting that steel is stronger than Iron because it's impure.
>it's not quite the nietzschean idea that will overpowers everything, more like being strong enough to persevere through any hardship and learn from it.
But that is the nietzschean idea
I was drinking with my dad few days back, and he said he rewatched the movie recently.
"The movie is a masterpiece, the cinematography, the sound, the editing, it holds up so well after all these years. But man, the ideas in this movie are total trash. It's almost as if made by nazis."
I had urge to fricking choke him on the spot.
Doom thought power over flesh was absolute and elevated him to godhood. But he was only a man and when Conan's will overcomes, a few good sword strikes takes his head off like anyone else.
Its not the sword, its the man who wields it, and why. His father had it half right. Doom had it half right. Conan figured out it was a balance of both
I think something people miss about this scene is that Conan's father is talking about something he forged himself. A big theme of this movie is that Conan shapes his character through the movie, going from someone who basically only does what he is told to by his slaves into someone who is in control of his own destiny.
Just saying "will is stronger than steel" is not a satisfactory answer, because a weak will can still be subjugated by steel and flesh (hence why so many were under Thulsa Doom's control). You need to look beyond the sword; man needs to forge his will just like a blacksmith forges his tools, that is the secret of steel.
That’s the riddle of steel. What is the steel compared t9 the hand that wields it. His father wasn’t wrong, but only gave a part of the answer. Strength is a combination of flesh, willpower, and the steel that one may wield.
He also uses said broken sword to kill Doom in the end. But also drops the sword on the ground after the deed and leaves it, as beyond the symbolic kill it's only broken steel.
His mother is the only woman or hell even person that will love a man unconditionally and truly. What's the point of living if you lose that love? Ain't like Howard had much else in his life from what I've read about him.
Doom's henchmen are so fricking cool. Someone was talking about it in the "tropes you love" thread but I adore when the villain's mooks are actually loyal/competent and when he looks after them in turn. Even though Thulsa really didn't care about anyone but himself probably... but at least he made them a sick cauldron of human soup.
bros i'm too lazy to walk across the room and plug in my hard drive. should i just download a temporary version of conan? because i really want to watch it right now.
Between the time when the oceans drank Atlantis and the rise of the sons of Aryas, there was an age undreamed of. Nah. The films pale in comparison and arnie is nowhere near the same as book conan. Film conan is stupid. Book conan is cunning. Film conan is unlucky. Book conan thrives thanks to luck. It was a shitty interpretation and a dishonour to howards works.
>Film conan is stupid.
He's not. He's quiet, and while he was a dumb brute while he was a slave he slowly became more cunning once he was set free. >Film conan is unlucky.
Fair.
I think that while it's not the most valid interpretation it's still a good one. Cona is a warrior who thrives because he is a barbarian and not part of civilisation which is the entire point of the Conan books. I am pointedly ignoring Conan the Destroyer here.
>I have never had so much as now. All my life, I've been alone. Many times I've faced my death with no one to know. I would look into the huts and the tents of others in the coldest dark and I would see figures holding each other in the night. But I always passed by. You and I, we have warmth. That's so hard to find in this world. Please, let someone else pass by in the night. Let us take the world by the throat and make it give us what we desire.
If you have not read any of the short stories you are missing out. They are better than the film and the style of the author makes it an enjoyable read.
Impressive stuff. I obviously knew he was the slave guy who took him and made him a warrior, but didn't notice the connection from childhood. And the real reason he sets him free is very compelling.
He groomed conan to be a valuable tool to sell off, but midway through he realised that he had not created a warrior but a man worthy of being a king. He could not in good conscience keep a king a slave, so he set him free.
though she looks liks the perfect woman in the film, photos out of the film with other hair types and clothing just make her look weird. That hairstyle was perfect for her facial features.
cowards ruin everything.
if all men followed a code of ethics and never diverted from it, we would have everything in working order.
imagine if nobody feared conflict because, as a group, we would defend and support each other in public instead of filming fights for clout.
social mirroring theory supports the idea that we gravitate towards people we respect and admire, we try to emulate them because we see their success.
if more genuinely good men were active in public, not screaming about political shit, but just going around helping and supporting people when they get time, the west would turn into the most successful and productive society on earth.
it's a snowball effect that starts with just one man. teach your kids to be that man. not to win an argument, just because how fricking amazing it would be to raise a king amongst the shit, your son would be a leader, born to fix society just by existing.
kino I can trust

No shit. Neither Doom nor his father were correct about the riddle of steel.

Holy based. 4k when?
Conan has always been a thief. It's based on the 30's short stories, not DnD you fricking idiot. Real the God in the Bowl, the Tower of the Elephant, etc.
That's the main thing most fantasy and D&D get wrong. They always shove barbarians in the warrior class. They're cooler as rogues. Maybe the most warrior like, but still rogues.
Barbarian shouldn’t be a class in the first place. Same goes for any class outside fighter/rogue/magic user.
classes have fricked up people's brains
>mages can't wear armor because.... they just can't!
>rogues can't use warrior weapons..... they just can't!
>warriors can't use spells .... they just can't!
>barbarians can't do anything .... they just can't!
And that's just modern rpgs, old school DnD had way more restrictions fricking BG1-1 was hell to play beyond fighter/wizard
THIS, FINALLY
Barbarian is a background, it's not a fricking job descriptor
should be a fighter sub-class at most
>Barbarian shouldn’t be a class in the first place.
moronic take. People came out with concept that define different magic (priest vs wizard), add and remove (say less, armor, but berzerk rage for the barbarian) or mix (paladin is a bit priest, a bit fighter).

nope
early in his career he's just a dirty, thieving Cimmerian

Conan is a fighter/thief

Yeah, the point is his dad was wrong. It's will that's stronger than steel.

There needs to be a Crom Political axis.
>it's not quite the nietzschean idea that will overpowers everything, more like being strong enough to persevere through any hardship and learn from it.
But that is the nietzschean idea

Picture him as a camel and heem him
The will is stronger than both flesh and steel.
there is no will, and furthermore there are no values, without flesh
All are incomplete. At the end he needed Steel, flesh, will and his friends to beat Doom.
Doom thought power over flesh was absolute and elevated him to godhood. But he was only a man and when Conan's will overcomes, a few good sword strikes takes his head off like anyone else.
You're wrong, because Doom couldn't control Conan. He proved that neither steel nor flesh, but the will is the strongest.
>will meme
why didnt valeria's will protect her
She made offered to pay the gods so Conan could live. She chose her fate.
She made a bargain with the Gods to save Conan. Also she ascended to being a Valkyrie.
Bottom line this movie is metal as frick and we’ll never see a movie this high test again
Its not the sword, its the man who wields it, and why. His father had it half right. Doom had it half right. Conan figured out it was a balance of both
there is NOTHING you can trust anon
im sorry
You can trust Atlantean steel
the way you could trust father's sword before?
Atlantean don't crack. That sword is millennia old, pre Cataclysm, and not rusted or dull.
i wouldnt wanna make my life depend on it
Symbolically and physically it held up a dead king for centuries
That's also such a cool classic image. The king's body being seated on his throne.
It's a symbol for a lot of stuff - technology, civilization, craftsmanship, knowledge. These things hold us up every day. What a great frickin movie
which would make me trust it even less
What about Crom?
If you have to trust Crom then you fricked up.
I think something people miss about this scene is that Conan's father is talking about something he forged himself. That’s the riddle of steel. What is the steel compared t9 the hand that wields it. His father wasn’t wrong, but only gave a part of the answer. Strength is a combination of flesh, willpower, and the steel that one may wield.
What kind of children are we raising teaching them they can't trust each-other?
smart ones.
It’s what happens without a homogenous society
>wow what a piece of shit
Hey it lasted like twenty years for the chief henchman until it got struck with an Atlantean blade
Yeah that was supposed to be Kull in that crypt right?
oh wow, i never realized it was his fathers sword in that scene
He also uses said broken sword to kill Doom in the end. But also drops the sword on the ground after the deed and leaves it, as beyond the symbolic kill it's only broken steel.
The most kino conan tale
I was so excited to see that it was getting an animated adaptation. Shame it got canned.
I prefer tower of the elephant
It’s a fricking tragedy Howard killed hinder at such a young age. We could’ve had 30 or 40 more years worth of Conan tales
His mother is the only woman or hell even person that will love a man unconditionally and truly. What's the point of living if you lose that love? Ain't like Howard had much else in his life from what I've read about him.
Do NOT read Vale of the Lost Women
time to reopen the book
I remember hearing The Cybrarian's audio version of that story.
"I would never leave a white woman in the hands of a black man."
Conan confirmed for browsing Cinemaphile & /misc/.
Red Nails is definitely top 5 Conan stories, and that Ken Kelly cover is amazing.

don't forget the Mongols, and Conan being painted with symbols to keep the spirits from taking him is an obvious nod to Kwaidan, which is Japanese
>including European, Mediterranean, North African, Egyptian, Persian, Arabic, and Indian.
none of which being native to nigs
Nigs were in a lot of the original Conan stories. They were only there to be incompetent secondary villains, but they were there.
In Queen of the Black Coast wasn't the crew black? Or am I misremembering.
Yeah, the crew was black. They all die offscreen when the manbat demon attacks.
Pretty sure the Stygians are supposed to be white though.
spoken like someone who's never read a Conan story in his life

yes
The hero’s journey is always the same, everyone of us is somewhere on the same path as Conan right now.

This is when Conan is seduced by the witch. Throw her in the fire man
He can't stop opening incognito tabs until one of them gives him a seemingly random revelation about his destiny like accidentally clicking on a job or trade school ad then the computer tries to murder him
The movie is just a reflection of Howard's writing which is almost 100 years old. Holds up better than almost anything from that era.

More low fantasy kinos like Conan the Barbarian?
The Scorpion King
Don't know why they changed Conan's origin and killed off all his people their homeland is like in the Alps mountains and they're no pushovers.
Robert E Howard's world used names of real peoples, but it wasn't really Earth. Cimmeria was a dim and misty Nordic land of rocky cliffs.
I love Conan the Adventurer(cartoon) and I WILL. NOT. APOLOGIZE.
>He is Conan, Cimmerian. He will not cry, so I cry for him.
How do I find a bro like Subotai?
The idea of cutting off the devil's head with your father's "broken" sword is really mythically powerful
though she looks liks the perfect woman in the film, photos out of the film with other hair types and clothing just make her look weird. That hairstyle was perfect for her facial features.
>the riddle of diddles
>rubs hands in glee
cowards ruin everything.
if all men followed a code of ethics and never diverted from it, we would have everything in working order.
imagine if nobody feared conflict because, as a group, we would defend and support each other in public instead of filming fights for clout.
social mirroring theory supports the idea that we gravitate towards people we respect and admire, we try to emulate them because we see their success.
if more genuinely good men were active in public, not screaming about political shit, but just going around helping and supporting people when they get time, the west would turn into the most successful and productive society on earth.
it's a snowball effect that starts with just one man. teach your kids to be that man. not to win an argument, just because how fricking amazing it would be to raise a king amongst the shit, your son would be a leader, born to fix society just by existing.
