I hate the idea of changing his character like that, but if he basically played the same character he did in Ted Lasso, it would work really well counter to Thor.

All the flaws of Thor 4 were already there in Thor 3, but the combination of Thor 3's success and the implosion of MCU quality control during the pandemic seemed to convince Waititi that he should double down on everything, when he needed to pull back.
What happened with Taika is the same that happened to Whedon: He found great success working under a tighter leash, was afforded near-total creative control for the sequel, and couldn't balance it without active oversight.

Absolutely no sense of grandeur or drama, everything has to be under cut with a shitty joke. On a somewhat related note, I absolutely hate what they did to the Warriors Three and Sif. Volstagg and Fandral get unceremoniously offed minutes after Hela shows up and only Hogun, the only nonwhite guy, unsurprisingly, gets a hopeless last stand. If you really have to kill them, at least let them all die together. And Jesus what they did to Sif, have her show up in LaT just to die.

I know Doctor Strange 2 whining is a bootable offense by now, but reading that (accurate) description of Thor 3 it really strikes me that Strange's sequel has a lot of the same beats, including the disposability of the hero's own lore and supporting cast and the similar girlboss lady villains.
It feels like Thor 3's success convinced Feige you could pep up a franchise with sequels that were as different as possible from the originals, which is also how we got Ant-Man 3.
Strange 2 at least showed the ginger fricking things up and making her feel like a threat. I cant remember Hela from Ragnarok doing anything impressive

Now you guys point it out, Ragnarok, Dr Strange 2, and Quantumania all share a lot of the same fundamental problems:

This is probably a consequence of their abandoned pandemic plotline, but Walker unironically has an epic redemption arc. Sure, he killed a terrorist in the heat of battle for revenge. I can see why Sam and Bucky would want better from the bearer of the shield. But Walker forges his own shield and rejoins the fight, his actions ultimately proving him a hero. It's almost but not quite a refutation of Sam and Bucky's assessment of him, but in the end it doesn't matter. He is who he is, and even if that's not Captain America, he's still a hero.
Most of the good mcu flicks past endgame are the films closing out specific characters arcs. NWH & GOTG3 are practically epilogues for Spidey & the Guardians. With those out of the way nobody has a single reason left to care
