GDP per capita takes into account non-working population. A decent salary for a childfree worker in L.A is like 75k.

still is a lot of money, if you are an average worker you need to be in switzerland or luxemburg to hope having a gdp per capita bigger than that. Those writers basically get just average wage. If hollywood is too fricking expensive tho, that is another problem, they should live somewhere else, writing is one of the easiest remote jobs

          Anonymous

"median" is not a type of "average" when they mean different things altogether. maybe they are to journalists or redditors, but median has a mathematical meaning separate from average. when talking about money, it's almost always better to clarify if you're talking about the mean amount or the median amount because they are almost invariably different by significant amounts, as they surely are here

The fact that they feel the need to post shit like this to go like "NO SEE?! WE'RE SUPER POOR GUYS, FOR REAL!" is all the proof I need that they don't need any more money. No one questioned the genuine needs of rail workers during their strike. Wonder why it's different for writers who choose a very competitive field and live in one of the most expensive places in the world

      Anonymous

people question the needs of workers striking all of the time lol, especially when most media outlets are owned by companies that are trying to crush those strikes. for the wga/sag strikes, i haven't really seen any rich hollywood people say that they're personally struggling; it's mostly people who are probably making median pay and lower. don't get me wrong, i hate hollywood millionaires as much as the next guy, i've mostly just been seeing them talk about solidarity and not about "pay me specifically more."

        Anonymous

Like I said, I didn't see any striking rail workers desperately trying to justify why they needed more money and most of the public was on their side. It was basically just Biden/DNC that turned them down.
I don't just hate millionaire writers, I hate all of them. They're mostly elitist snobs who are now crying because they refuse to move to a real profession or to somewhere affordable.

          Anonymous

any time striking workers have a platform, they use it to talk about why their demands should be met. "the rail companies need to give us more vacation time because we get 0 days of vacation time" is not that dissimilar from "i should be getting paid more than $50 for a 16 hour workday," both of them are "justifying" why they need more money/better workers rights. i imagine plenty of lower-paid writers/actors would move out of hollywood if they could but that is geographically the most likely place for them to live to get consistent work. if you don't value film as a medium, why are you on a board focusing on film? i don't think video games are art so i never go on Cinemaphile

i don't know what your exact beliefs or dispositions are. there's been a lot of israeli people in hollywood since hollywood existed, a lot of times the people working in it were socially progressive for their era on average, the richest were still rich and lived in gated communities like they do now, etc. if you genuinely believe everyone in the industry hates you now, why not expand that to every year since its creation?

The writers strike is a meme. Writers are not being replaced by AI, at least not all of them. Good writers will make a better script than AI, a good script will lead to a better show/film, a better show/film will lead to a better audience reception and more money. Hollywood is not going to fire all writers, so they can get a worse product written by AI since they’ll make less money that way. I’m the grand scheme of things writers are cheap and more than make up for their costs. So this whole idea that AI will replace writers is false, that’s not happening.

What’s happening is that writers are going to be laid off, because there’s too many. Watch this video and just listen to what the writers union themselves say. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=s02VWyRA__M
They flat out tell us that writers rooms have 12+ people in them. That is ridiculous, you do not need 12 writers for a show. Large writer rooms like this are a primary reason why writing is so bad today, you have so many people giving their own ideas and muddying the waters that you lose direction and a clear goal/objective. Hollywood knows this, they know the writing is poor, they know it’s hurting their products, and they want to correct it. Another thing the writers union said is that if you decrease the number of writers then the 2-4 that get hired won’t be women, minorities, or queers, which means they’re literally admitting that writers room are full of incompetent diversity hires. No wonder everything has such a progressive bias and agenda.

Quite frankly I see no reason why writers rooms need so many writers and I am all for getting rid of the bloat and diversity hires. I could care less about the studios and their money, I just want better television and film, and this will help us get that. I don’t understand why anyone supports these writers, they’re bad at their job and a lot of them deserve to be laid off. If you want better movies and shows we need smaller writer rooms

      Anonymous

Writers rooms have been crowded for decades, the fricking WWE has a team of 20+ writers.
"AI will replace writers" is hyperbole at this point, but you can't deny that AI was the catalyst for these worthless fricks finally having to tighten their belts.

        Anonymous

Nah, AI is literally irrelevant. How much does it cost to hire 2-4 good writers for 3/4 months? That’s all you need to create a well written show. A few good writers will theoretically make a much better product than something written by AI, and even though a few good writers cost more they’ll make way more profit from a better written show because it’ll get more viewers or sell more tickets. The writers are just using AI as a scapegoat because it’s way better optics for them to say “they’re trying to replace writers with AI” than it is for them to say “they’re trying to fire the shitty writers bloating writer rooms and making scripts worse!”. In the video I posted the writers union themselves said they’re trying to go from 12 writers to 2 and I truly hope that happens because we’ll get much better television and film. Those 2 writers will be way more likely to be quality ones, and even if they’re shitty ones at least it won’t be as bad because it won’t be a too many cooks type situation.

      >you do not need 12 writers for a show.
I don't get why you need 12 writers in a show, only maybe if you are doing live scripted television or a daily soap opera like The Bold and the Beautiful. There is no reason for normal tv shows, or movies to have more than 1 writer, a writing room should be composed by 1-2 writers max, an editor that might act as a support writer and the director, that like the editor proofreads the material, nothing more

65k isn’t a lot. You can’t buy a house in any city in the country on that.

        Anonymous

I live 30 minutes from Gary, Indiana. You can absolutely buy a house there for $65k or less. You will also very likely be murdered within a month of moving in.

But you're not supposed to be able to buy a house outright in America. 2/3rds of Americans have mortgages.

I’m not talking about buying outright, moron. 65k isn’t enough to even qualify for the loan in any normal city. I couldn’t afford the house I bought six years ago today, and it’s in a ghetto shithole.

My friend, don't blame me for your post being unclear.

And yes, you can absolutely qualify for a $200k loan on a $65k salary. And $200k is enough to buy a decent starter home in many parts of the country.

              Anonymous

Ya idk what he’s talking about, 65k is a 20% down payment on a 325k home. Can get you a decent house in many parts of the country.

Why doesn't Hollywood just hire 2 or 3 really good writers and pay them more instead of hiring 20 nepo baby writers with 0 publications? Is there a mandate or some shit where they need to hire the executives cousin?
