I think its meant to be a self-sustaining platform, growing its own food to limit the need for resupply letting it stay in orbit indefinitely
It looks like it was designed to be a refuge for the military. The you find they have O'Niell 3's and a few moon colonies. Also, seeing it a second time realized this is alternate 2065.

Sort of. Plays out more from the parental figure's point of view with the same use of the child as a metaphor for the ability to grow.

If it means anything, New Asia wasnt put in a good light either, showing a primitive and autocratic nature. As for the other thing, he wasnt written in an obnoxious way. Couldve been anyone.

Thats true for almost every "sci fi" movie. They are just action movies with special effects. Sci fi belongs on paper in books
Arrival worked way better on film, and you can't argue they didn't explore that concept to as much as they were able. Some concepts just work better visually.
I found the choice to make it alt-history positively mind-boggling. Why give your audience an even harder premise to swallow when you don’t need to?

The perspective for NOMAD never made sense, it's supposed to be in orbit but it does not look like it's in orbit in most scenes.

I liked it. Interesting concept, decent writing & plot, excellent effects.
It's like Blade Runner, no one went to see it, the critics were divided and decades later it became a cult, the same will happen with this one

The movie was fine, but I think with the premise it could have been great. The performances didn't elevate the material, there were plot conveniences that didn't add up, and the ending of the movie felt a bit rushed. What it did really well was the production value and effects. The world felt believable and lived in, the effects weren't excessive spectacle and looked really good (except for the secret hatch leading down to the weapon, for some reason that looked fake and shitty), and a lot of the quality world building was basically done with the setting and effects rather than any compelling explanation. I also like that the movie ended as a complete narrative, and not as a "just wait til you come see this telegraphed sequel, as long as we're successful enough!" cliffhanger bullshit.

I also thought it was decent, I really liked the aesthetics, the setting, the alt-history. But how was it possible for the child actor to be so much better at acting than an adult who did theater? Also the messaging/ai stuff was very rushed. I hate when movies or series have an interesting premise but shoehorn personal drama into it.
I thought it looked great and loved the designs, but the story pissed me off with how dumb it was.
