A consistently engaging and evolving concept. It's also impressive that when Wagner had Grendels cross over with Batman and the Shadow that he didn't just have his own creation curb stop them.
I've been buying the original Comico issues recently. The coloring is so much better than the recolors. Which is kind of weird because Bernie Mireault does the recolors, and he's typically pretty good
> The decision was made after Grendel had done the bulk of its filming but the series was not finished, so there is currently a partial eight-episode season in the can.
That's fucking wild. I thought AMC was the only network canceling shit mostly finished.
A lot of the big companies are doing it now since a lot of these things end up completely bombing and it's better to just write them off as a loss instead of investing even more money in them. Warner has been doing it a lot lately, they canned an almost completely finished Batgirl movie not that long ago which makes even less sense since they're still dumping money in things that are obviously dead ends like the Flash.
They're not *completely* finished, probably still has a lot of after-effect stuff that needs to be done and that costs money as does marketing if you want any hope of having an audience. It probably is just more financially sound to use them as a tax write-off instead of making the loss even bigger because of sunk cost fallacy.
Is this it? I once saw this edition in a bookstore with a bunch of other old graphic novels/albums that seemed to come from a warehouse or something, they were discounted
Wish I had gotten it when I had the chance, but back then it kind of went over my head
I really want to love it, but I'm only interested in Hunter Rose really and the actual main story he has was written by a very amateur Wagner and it shows.
The Indian Wolfman thing is also really gay and dated in a 70's/80's liberal "natives are so spiritual and wise and he says 'my people' " way
Behold The Devil is a good remake of that story and actually my first Grendel comic, bought it randomly years ago, wish I still had the original trade of it.
Only read the Hunter Rose parts but that's a great story about the impact and trauma of pedophilia with some weird demon shit that doesn't fit. I want to read the space parts but the Christine and other stuff in between I didn't really like.
I know it's supposed to be good at some point but the main character is a fucking hilarious Mary Sue to a point where I simply can't take it seriously enough to read it.
I read through most of it - I got as far as the weird Foundation knock-off stuff with Grendel becoming an honorific. It's compelling, even if I'm not entirely sure it's good.
the problem with Grendelis that the most iconic version is Hunter Rose but he only appeared in a crappy mini-series that isn't canon/Wagner wants EVERYONE to pretend never existed, a story that is told 100% in text with crappy illustrations that are glorified pin-ups designed to show off Wagner's art style, and a bunch of random one-off stories that have Hunter acting increasingly evil and pedophile-like because Wagner is pissy that gimp post-Apocalypse Grendel and cyberpunk girl Grendel aren't as popular as Hunter
>28 pages of boring table setting bullshit featuring characters who will never appear again >2 pages of Grendel stabbing someone while saying something pretentious >THE END
Hunter Rose was great, the arc immediately after with his daughter was terrible on both a writing and art standpoint. The Road Warrior Grendel stuff was just okay.
I was about to call him a poor man's Spawn but it turns out Grendel was created ten years before Spawn. So I guess that makes Spawn a rich man's Grendel.
A series that was really only interesting at the beginning and rapidly turned into the ussual 90s slush or miniseries/spinoff pilots and wanking the "genius" main character.
Also a series that is completely filled with pedophiles so Hunter Rose can look better against someone.
If he had just kept it as Assasin Daredevil it would have worked better.
I'm a fan. Although I haven't nearly read all of them, but I do like the whole spiderverse twist to grendel and the supernatural parts too. The art was always a big draw too.A few of my grendel comics...
Grendel: Black and White and Red all over was some good Hunter Rose material.
Both the Batman crossovers were kino, so was the Shadow crossover.
Ignore that one moron here who keeps trying to tell you it's all set in the 1930's. Only the Shadow story was, and that was expressly time travel of the "getting hit on the head" kind, like A Connecticut Yankee In King Arthur's Court" or "A Princess of Mars".
Whoever wrote off the TV series as a Producers scam deserves to be stabbed repeatedly with an electrified devil's fork.
Rorshah if he was mary sue, sassy and dumb. Doing absolutely retarded shit, like /b/tard playing skyrim through all comics but due to plot armor always comes on the top, and everyone just accepts his shizo ideas as the TRUTH just because writer said so.
Jobbed to Beowulf

gonna be awkward in another year or two when the Netflix show comes out and he's a tween
I love Grendel, great comics, I'm proud to own the original coloring version of Devil By The Deed.
It's cancelled.
I've been buying the original Comico issues recently. The coloring is so much better than the recolors. Which is kind of weird because Bernie Mireault does the recolors, and he's typically pretty good
Huh.

May as well just release them it's lost no matter what.

I don't know it's been recolored 3 times it might be the same as this which is what I own with the blue cover.
3rd.
Soul
Soulless
Forced soul
There a high quality scan of either of these?
Orion's Reign best Grendel I'll fight you fuckers

Is he still 14 years old in this version?
14 or 15
hunter rose is edgelord kino
grendel prime is edgelord kino
everything in between is shit
>Doesn't like God and The Devil.
Grendel Prime is retarded. How do you go from serial killer mob boss to uber elite super soldiers? Fuck Matt Wagner.
>28 pages of boring table setting bullshit featuring characters who will never appear again

I was about to call him a poor man's Spawn but it turns out Grendel was created ten years before Spawn. So I guess that makes Spawn a rich man's Grendel.
How are they similar though beyond the vaguely similar mask? I wouldn't call Spawn the rich version of anything regardless.
I only became interested sole because of a treehouse of horror comic, with Bart in a Grendel costume. Lisa naturally askes if he read Beowulf.
Exactly what comics needs more of.
Giant walls of text paired with mediocre art in service of a plot no one will care about?
>mediocre art
Wrong. Wagner and his collaborators are top tier indie comics. Love the BEM issues

Last physical Grendel
Guys I'm starting to think that Hunter Rose was a bit of a douchebag.
Proof?
Grendel: Black and White and Red all over was some good Hunter Rose material.

The shadow crossover was the best grendel content in years
I thought that Aeon Flux borrowed heavily from Devil's Legacy.
Cool mask. Minus the bunny nose. I'd make it look like a skull nose.
I like the Grendel Prime mask better, but skullshit would ruin it
Rorshah if he was mary sue, sassy and dumb. Doing absolutely retarded shit, like /b/tard playing skyrim through all comics but due to plot armor always comes on the top, and everyone just accepts his shizo ideas as the TRUTH just because writer said so.
but Hunter Rose fucking dies
And his mary sue aura brainwashes entire human population in to one giant Grenderl Cult from the grave, which constantly producing his shizo copies.
Is Mage good?
Yes
i love his design
