Middle child boy with sisters both older and one younger. I was not a door mat, I fought with both a lot and I’ll always remember giving tough love to my younger one, like when I was driving her home and a sudden quick brake when I picked her up from school because she didn’t put on her seatbelt. Or when my older sister would sit on me and I bit her butt to get her off me.

She's selfish as frick. I can't believe that the end of the series had Dipper give up his dream so that she wouldn't be lonely during the school year. The opposite would've made for some nice character development.
I speculate Hirsch wrote the finale long beforehand but failed to properly build up to it but at that point he didn't care because he had burned himself out working on the first season (due to his own poor managment).
If Dipper and Mabel had cooperated in solving the mystery stuff then only Dipper receiving the aprenticeship offer would seem strange and inappropriate and his eager acceptance of it would be a selfish betrayal of Mabel whose help he needed to get that far.
But since the show didn't actually establish a theme of the twins working together (Hirsch's own fault) then the intended meaning couldn't land because the logical connections just aren't there and a new meaning with the actual information present is accidently created; Mabel throws a tantrum at the prospect of Dipper receiving a hard-earned reward and he gives it up to placate her.
