very complicated character, like they they introduced someone like that into a kids show. The way she was handled though could have been better. I wish we saw more of her.
She's not really all that complicated. She's a spoiled brat that ran away from her issues up until she couldn't, then killed herself and passed the buck onto everyone else.
True, but before and after her attempts to kill herself, she tries to change. Unfortunately her static nature as a gem ensured that she remained a brat in some capacity forever until she went full Steven.
Except that's dumb because it completely undermines any sort of development the gems went through. They're effectively saying none of the gems can truly change who they are, not even the Diamonds. It flies in the face of the themes of the show.

How much of her was the writers trying to show "your heroes aren't perfect" and how much was them trying to do that but fricking up? Because she just seemed like more and more of a moron as the show went on.
The weird thing is we see her character development in reverse and I thought the lesson would be its not about your past mistakes so long as you grow from it. Except everyone totally dwells on rose's past mistakes and treats the memory of her like some sort of pariah even though shes the only fricking reason the planet is still standing. Its so easy to condemn her in retrospect. After all she was working with way less information than we have.
The problem is it’s framed more like a betrayal reveal and narratively in most stories a character cannot recover from that. At best they would become the butt of jokes or do something tragic to sacrifice themselves. PD cannot answer for anything she did in a direct way. To be fair, if she did not come clean about anything shady she did before an heroing for the sake of experiencing human existence and if she couldn’t do any of that before just dropping a lombotomized hybrid creature in her place with no way of knowing it would solve all her unfinished business post humorously, she probably never would’ve never been redeemed regardless.
Everyone in the show basically comes around to forgiving her mistakes pretty quickly, even Bismuth who turned on her because she felt that not wanting to kill the Diamonds was a betrayal, was now okay because she WAS a Diamond in secret. If anything that should make her more furious with Rose. Earth was her pet project, so it's not as though she were powerless to stop it from becoming another mined out shithole, her very rebellion means that it's not as though it was impossible for her to stand up to the Diamonds as herself. Lying to her friends and family just caused the situation to get worse, like immediately. There's "I couldn't possibly know everything" and repeating the same mistake causing the same problems.
