The three body problem is it’s hard to calculate things because there is a lot of variables, unfortunately you need to know the variables to calculate things in real life anyway

I thought it was about the aliens getting ganked by three suns taking turns in a gangbang. Have I been misinterpreting the whole show?

If you had 3 suns and a planet you would have a 4 body problem wouldn't you?

The 3 body problem is easily solvable. Your phone can do the calculations required. If you know the mass and trajectory of each object through observation you can then predict it step by step. The problem is that one of the bodies will either collide with one of the others or be ejected from the system entirely.

There are unnatural solutions to the problem that just wouldn't occur in the real world. There are hundreds of solutions to the 3 body problem.

It's not that the variables are hard to find, it's that 3 (comparable in mass) orbital bodies create a much more unstable orbital path than 2 bodies orbiting each other, or one orbiting the other. Binary orbital systems are stable once they've formed, they maintain consistent distances from each other basically forever on our human time frame.

3 bodies (of comparable mass) orbiting each other are literally never maintaining equal distance between any of its bodies, until one crashes into another. They're constantly drawing each other in and then slingshotting each other around on all three axis, in entirely unstable orbits. Planets of these star systems would be getting endlessly yeeted by these chaotic gravity wells in the same way. You wouldn't be able to orbit something like that at a single distance forever. You would be at 1 AU one month, .2 AU the next, 15 AU the month after that.

As for calculations, that point is that it takes exponentially more time to calculate orbital trajectories in a three body system than it does in a two body system, assuming the same degree of certainty.

It goes completely off the rails in the final one and is just a springboard for his custom sci fi rpg setting. “Wouldn’t it be cool if”, dude just make a youtube video ranting about your 3d space flowing into 2d space visions. 600 fricking pages of nonsense and they’re standing at the end remembering they solved FTL travel as a whoops forgot to tell you about that. I never understand the onions phones or whatever they're called. The foldable super computers. If you can get a supercomputer there, why not just take over the plaent with those? Why not have them build robot factories or just zip around killing every single human by blasting through their skulls like a probe?

          Anonymous

They're not supposed to affect anything physically. They can only affect perceptions, and their effectiveness gets divided over multiple tasks. So while a lot of people can be driven to suicide by blasting them with schizo delusions it wouldn't work on everyone. They also aren't supposed to be able to actually hack into shit either IIRC, but Netflix gonna Netflix and gave them the ability to crash planes and turn cars into death machines. The problem is then why do they only use the ability once for a single, quick shock scene? Because they were never supposed to be able to.

            Anonymous

I guess I just have to swallow that "Physically" part as magic alien science despite the computers being on earth, a location in space, and seen by people. As if there is a physical universe and non physical. I'm sure the book's author comes up with an elaborate way of putting it into speculative science.

I read a lot before my baby was born, but something happened to me once she was born where I just can't absorb any literature I read. It happens to a lot of new parents (it's the lack of sleep). I should be able to read books again in a few years time.
As for audiobooks, I will sometimes listen to some while working, but I still fail to absorb most of the story. Again, lack of sleep, but also distracted by work.

              Fucking incels get a life

Yeah, this is real - and could even persist until the early teen years, when the kids become relatively self-sufficient in the evening and weekends as a part of their normal development. Getting older with work responsibilities increasing (use brain more) coupled with spending time with kids developing them (not a passive endeavor, if you want to make it meaningful) means that you don't have the time or concentration for appreciating literature as you used to. Cinemaphile is a nice brain-playground that doesn't take a lot of concentration and takes little time. Don't fool yourself - spending time with kids isn't mindless, and you need trivial distractions (Cinemaphile). You will be glad that you spent time with them instead of a book ... there is time for literature later, when they want to be independent and you have to let them go.

If that is so then concentration meditation can regrow that part of your brain.

This show is mediocre at best. I liked the first two episodes but after that the show falls off pretty hard. In the first two episodes you have most of the intrigue and mystery left, and you also get the China parts which are very well produced/portrayed.

    Things that bothered me:
*the mega overload of "minorities" inserted
*the overall dynamic of the scientists
*characters being victims without any build up. Like Auggs, they talk about her background but they don't show or tell anything specific.
*the cancer guys arc kinda drags. And he isn't very sympathetic until maybe the last episode

    A bunch of other stuff
*why doesn't anyone beside Saul figure out the sky blinking was morse code? Surely some other smart people see it and figure out its a countdown?
*WHAT WAS THE POINT OF USING THE NANO TECH ON THE BOAT? They could've destroyed it anyways, and they still killed everyone. To save the hard drive? It was only luck (writing) that the nano threads didn't shread the hard drive as well

Honestly the books seems a lot more intriguing than this mess of a show.

I'm a racist and misogynist but I thought that the show had the most naturaly diverse cast I've ever seen, both the main group and the surrounding cast. The main group were friends because they studied under the same professor at a high level so it makes sense.

Neither was I bothered by Auggies whiny behavior, she tried to stick to her principles during a highly turbulent time, it also makes sense.

Looking forward to season 2 for sure.

So I skimmed the wikipedia article about this series. It seems the human scientist who is basically the villian that sent aliens to destroy earth wins/survives in the end, the aliens magically stop human technological advancement that could have gave them a fighting chance, and the aliens eventually destroy earth and everyone dies.

So basically, why would i watch this knowing the ending is so shit?

      >the human scientist who is basically the villian that sent aliens to destroy earth wins
i didnt see them as a villain personally, i thought their story was the only interesting part in the whole series. humanity drove her to that point where she trusted the aliens to do a better job at handling their future.
which they mightve been since their planet isnt destroyed in the first place by anything they're responsible for, it's just a fluke of nature that they have to deal with and overcome.
the aliens only become a villain in the first place because of discovering humans are quite loathsome.
