Why didn't he just make another more powerful ring after losing the first one?

because he put a significant part of his power into the first one

Why did he put a significant portion of his power and his biggest weakness into the ring if the only thing it gave him was 9 horseriding humies?

God is like an infinite supply of energy to them so if they reject him like Melkor and Sauron they're cut off, which means they're running on a limited amount of "battery", the more they use their power the less they have it which is why they have to rely on third parties like orc armies and magic amulets

because the mission was a secret. Sauron would knopw exactly where the ring was if a bunch of giant eagles started flying directly to mordor.

sauron and sauronman have spies everywhere

          Anonymous

because he didn't mean for it to be used to only get 9 wraiths

the original plan was for the 16 rings for power (which later became the 7 and the 9) to be used by the elves, making them susceptible to his control through the one ring.
that's who sauron wanted to control, the elves, who at the time (early 2nd age) were the dominant civilization in middle earth
and that's what the one ring actually does: it makes the wearers of the other rings more susceptible to control

but, despite putting a big chunk of his power into the one ring, it was not enough
as soon as he put it on, the elves knew and took the rings off
then sauron attacked them and was able to take the 16, but not the 3 great rings that celembrimbor made without him.
so, plan b, 7 rings to the dwarves (didn't work, all that managed was that the dwarves became very rich, which then attracted dragons, rip) and 9 to men (worked, now he has ringwraiths)

          >he put a significant part of his power into the first one
          >the only thing the ring can do is change diameter and make you invisible

the one ring applies a psi buff to the wearer, and the lesser rings apply a psi debuff to their wearers. the whole ring scapade was essentially a mind control plot.
invisibility is a side-effect, as the primary effect, mind control, works in the unseen world (spirit world). pushing somebody into the unseen makes them invisible in the seen, unless the person is strong enough to resist the effect
incidentally, this effect was present for other rings too, which is why the nazgul are invisible (or would be, if they were not wearing capes). elrond/galadriel/gandalf are powerful enough to control their rings, preventing the effect.
dwarves don't have souls (as they are not children of illuvatar, but essentially machines made by aule), so this effect cannot work on them at all.

To give a comparison as to how powerful Melkor is, Sauron used a significant portion of his power to enchant a ring.
Morgoth used a significant portion of his power to "enchant" Arda, the entire planet, which is why it's tainted. That's also how sorcery works - you tap into that taint.

            >That's also how sorcery works
What's the difference between good and evil magic in the lore?

              Anonymous

              Depends:
              1. Elves, dwarves, and Maya are inherently "magical" and possess supernatural powers of their own. They merely need to hone them.

              2. Other races, like humans or orcs, need to learn it. "Sorcery" is accessing Morgoth's taint for your powers, and therefore is evil in nature, whilst otherwise you need to learn it like and art, or craft, like Numenorean smiths who enchanted their weapons.

An item may also receive supernatural properties via being part of a great deed.

You can also simply inherit supernatural abilities via your bloodline.

And there's the whole "song=magic" thing, but that's an entire lecture.

Magic cannot be replenished. Once you expend your spirit to forge something, the energy, or soul, it takes from you is gone forever. Sauron put so much of himself into the Ring that while he did retain personal power, he could never have done it a second time.

This, incidentally, is why he was b***h mode. Feanor didn't make a shitty ring, he made three fricking Silmarils to capture and hold the light of the Two Trees (among much, much more), and when he ultimately died he exploded into a blazing solar fireball from all the spirit pouring out of him that he still had.

Now imagine if the Valar weren't complete b***hes, and allowed him to reincarnate. He would've swam back to Middle-Earth the next day after getting a new body.

So Sauron's whole plan is to succ out half his power and put them in the ring, and then give the rings to the notable races and the corrupt them? Seems like a pretty shitty plan to me.

You need to remember the political situation of the time. The Second Age was the de-facto "golden age", where the races of Men, Elves and Dwarves all possessed mighty kingdoms.

Sauron wasn't like Morgoth in personality. Morgoth wanted the destruction and corruption of Arda. Sauron sought control of it.

So the easiest route was controlling those who control those kingdoms.

Plus, even Tolkien admits that Sauron was less evil than Morgoth, and sought his own version of peace, order and prosperity. He simply thought that ONLY under his guidance could this happen.

First, you tell Frodo to swallow the ring to keep it secret and safe, and that the plan is to get him to Mount Doom and shit it out into the lava. He is not to tell anyone about its existence.
Then, you get 15 or 20 other hobbits together and tell them that they are Frodo’s honor guard and that they are taking him on an important secret mission and are to shoot arrows at any bad guys that get too close. Then you tell the Eagles that all of the Hobbits are actually evil goblin shapeshifters, and they are not to be spoken or listened to under any circumstances, but only dropped into the lava at Mount Doom.
Then everyone takes off and a cloud of eagles stoop on Mt. Doom from all directions, with Frodo in the middle. You also have decoy eagles fly north and south of Mt. Doom.
So the eagle flies to the big cave, and Frodo starts unbuckling his pants to shit the ring out, but then the Eagle just drops him in the lava. Fricking sorted one afternoon.
