The DCEU has never had the highest grossing movie of the year, let alone beating the MCU more or less heads up. Not even Aquaman beat the MCU that year. It's time to accept it. Comparing the DCEU to movies 4 years before it proves absolutely nothing.

That movie was so fricking uninteresting I actually blacked out during it. I remember green b***h arguing with robot b***h, then I suddenly jumped forward in time and some half-assed Star Wars ripoff space fighters were flying around, making a giant force field or some shit. Then I blacked out again, then it was "Dance off, bro", then they were holding hands like homosexuals and the tree guy died and then it ended.

I wasn't drunk or on drugs, it was just so fricking boring and uninspired.

See that one is surprising because those films have never done amazing? I've heard mixed things about the AppleTV+ show Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, but yeah, that franchise is trundling along. Some things are ongoing. Sony are doing more Ghostbuster films built on nostalgia with the second one of these coming out soon.

I honestly think the MCU influence on film has been Hell. Reboots and remakes existed before, sure, but all the soft reboot/remake tactics, the shared universes, the gimmicks, all come from the comic book industry and the MCU overall. It has infected executives and they have never let it go.

Like who the frick decided to make a whole organisation about building the Ghostbuster universe into a new big franchise. A fricking fun comedy with a weaker sequel does not a universe make.

I will always say the DCEU should have launched with a New Frontier movie. 80% of the characters are already famously known in various media, only a few needed any sort of audience introduction ala the MCU.

Hell, the Incredibles hit the ground running with a full universe of superhumans, and didn't frick around. Practically every Western ticket buyer knows what most of these guys are about, and Chi-nah doesn't give a shit about nuance anyway.

    >Hire Snyder to direct Man of Steel
    >Snyder explicitly tells people after The Dark Knight Rises that Superman is in his own universe and the other heroes will get solo outings
    >WB sees Avengers making bank. They go nuts
    > Man of Steel sequel becomes a rushed lead-in to Justice League
    >Suicide Squad comes out where the director was ignored and the studio pivoted to try and make the movie funnier like Guardians of the Galaxy
    >Wonder Woman and Aquaman are hits, but barely register a blip on the cultural radar afterwards
    >Snyder's child dies and instead of pausing the movie, the get Joss Whedon.
    > Justice League middling critical reception and poor performance
    >More poor performances with WW1984, Blue Beetle, The Flash, Shazam sequel, Black Adam
    >The Suicide Squad is received well critically, but is a box office bomb
    >WB decides to give their entire universe over to a guy for one of their only critical darlings
    >Creates convoluted confused regarding what is or isn't canon. Surprise! His stuff is the most canon, even though so much of it is canon to the Snyder-verse
    >Rinse-repeat-fall-asleep

      >Snyder explicitly tells people after The Dark Knight Rises that Superman is in his own universe and the other heroes will get solo outings
Kek you forgot something. They actively tried to retroactively make the Nolan films the start of their universe:
      >Christopher Nolan was an Executive Producer on Man of Steel.
      >Hans Zimmer, who did the music for Nolan movies, was used for Man of Steel.
      >They felt like Man of Steel was a failure and panicked and constructed Batman v Superman as the sequel.
      >They approached Christian Bale to reprise the role for Batman v Superman, to retroactively make his films part of the DCEU, and he declined to.

      >Wonder Woman and Aquaman are hits, but barely register a blip on the cultural radar afterwards
Aquaman came out after Justice League and made over a billion. I love how Aquaman made them change tactics again. Because after it was a huge box office smash they completely turned away from rebooting to try and make this universe work again.

And the favourite shall always be Black Adam and the Rock deciding he'll come in and fix this shit. They had about three almost reboots, post Aquaman, Black Adam and Flash. All failed.

They just never had a plan and had no consistency. They had box office success because normalgays genuinely thought they were MCU movies. Disney just beat DC to the shared universe curve

          Anonymous

Sure, it was always about the gimmick sustaining the MCU because some of those MCU movies (Iron Man 2 or Thor: The Dark World) are just as bad as later outings if not worse. DC was all over the place. Man of Steel doesn't do Avengers numbers so they decide to do a big team up movie which weirdly reminds me of Iron Man 2 stuffing Black Widow into that. Suicide Squad was all over the place and we'll never see the original intention of that. Alright solo movies building up to a team up movie was all they ever needed. Now the bubble is burst. 2 movies a year from the MCU was fine. Streaming shows and more movies is not. Half the problem now for me is that streaming is going to get stuffed with franchise universe attempts.

You forgot the OG suicide squad nearly breaking 1,000,000,000 fricking dollars but apparently that wasn't good enough so they rebooted the cast immediately swapped directors and then it bombed and made <200 million as Gunn's first official DC movie.

          >nearly breaking 1,000,000,000 fricking dollars
It made 746 million so was not "breaking a billion". I think the problem with looking at the figures is not just that these DC films had big budgets, huge marketing budgets etc but also that the apparatus around making the films into a franchise and all the merchandise etc also costs a huge amount of money too. Then that was all also compared to what the MCU was doing (Avengers made over a billion in 2012). Executives literally believed that Man of Steel (2013) should have broken a billion and done comparable numbers because ultimately it is all superhero shit. If you want to know how out of touch executives are, there is nothing clearer. Ike Perlmutter at Marvel was also completely out of touch. And the Sony executives and their emails talking about stuffing dubstep into Amazing Spider-Man 2 to get the kids interested is also mental. Bob Iger talking about SW has also been funny over the years.

Exectives are trapped in even worse bubbles than the average social media bubble that normal people are in; staff bubbles full of "yes men" and others. If one superhero movie does well they just decide that their movie should also do well just because.
