I guess it's unfair to ask that of you without giving my opinion as well. Disenchantment should have been excellent, a sword and sorcery fantasy realm should be a great setting for the kind of jokes shows like Simpsons/Futurama specialize in, but it all feels flat. The jokes are tired, the voice actors, with the exception of West/DiMaggio and Berry, sound like they would rather be anywhere else, the animation is dull and the plots are as predictable as trite as seemingly possible. It would be less offensive to me if it was just bad, but it falls in the crushing range of lazy-mediocre. The theme song is awesome at least, and of course they cut that down to like ten seconds for all the seasons after the first.

What a dull answer.
As a whole yeah, but the Simpsons just has way more terrible seasons weighing it down.
The peak of Simpsons I think is better than peak Futurama, but its pretty close.
Groening has been super hands off with The Simpsons after the first season. The only time he really had any involvement was that crossover episode with The Critic and that was to get his name pulled from the credits. It's Al Jean you should be butthurt about.
>It's just like the story of the grasshopper and the octopus. >All year long the grasshopper kept burying acorns for winter while the octopus mooched off his girlfriend and watched TV. >Then the winter came, and the grasshopper died, and the octopus ate all his acorns and also he got a race car. >Is any of this getting through to you?
Pretty based
The grasshopper is wagecuck who works 8 hours minimum wage.
The octopus is a stock trader who makes more than the grasshopper without ever having to leave his apartment.
as opposed to us eating the unborn children of animals already, how? Besides don't feel bad about it. They're an entire species of not only cannibals, but villainous buttholes that destroy/devour whatever they bump into. That dude would vore you in an instant, say you taste like shit, and everyone else in the show wouldn't even blink an eye.
Futurama is nothing like Rick and Morty. Its not nihilistic, its not up its own ass about science, its not excessively gross or gory, and its emotional side is actually endearing. I watched both shows growing up and Futurama is just a better show with a MUCH better cast of characters and a much more vibrant animated world. Simpsons has its comedy and nothing more whereas Futurama has quality in every category. If I wanna watch a family cartoon comedy I'll go King of the Hill 9 times out of 10 over simpsons.
Luck of the Fryish is waaaaaaayyy better and more endearing than Fry's Dog. Only first time watchers prefer the dog episode. Luck of the Fryish is actually funny too, the documentary bit always kills me where they talk about his brothers (actually nephews) band >that's a number one record
Jurassic Bark is just depressing, its a very emotional ending but Luck of the Fryish is much more impactful. The bittersweet nature of it is more satisfying and sticks with you more.
Personally I hate all of the "emotional" episodes of Futurama. They feel tonally out of place and just feel forced. I'm not watching a comedy show to see comedy writers write maudlin Hallmark tier bullshit, I'm watching it for the comedy which is what the writers are actually good at.
The emotional episodes are only remembered as emotional because of the random gut punches that get you out of nowhere (at least in the best regarded one)
Jurassic Bark, Luck of the Fryish, The Devil's Hands, Cold Warriors and Game of Tones all come to mind as funny episodes that finish on emotional tones that are usually a twist or pay off, rather than the whole episode lauding itself as melodramatic.
reminds me of "comic relief", when they'd do a mediocre comedy sketch and then the presenter would come on and say, "jokes aside, now the serious bit, seriously folks, please please please open your wallets and give us money there are people out there who really really need your money" with videos of disgusting bubble headed creatures with flies crawling. on their eyeballs, that were apparently starving to death despite their population doubling consistently every 20 years.
I've heard that said before by contrarians on this board and its just not true, Futurama is based as hell with characters like Bender, Professor Farnsworth, and Zapp Brannigan. Rick and Morty, Archer, Bob's Burgers, bojack and the Simpsons are much more the "reddit" adult cartoons.
I don't hate every rick and morty episode either but those shows definitely feel like they speak to Reddit's philosophies and common personality traits
I marathoned it a couple years ago, up until the movies it holds up very well. Right after them you see it going downhill from the very first episode of season 7, which I didn't even finish. The first sign of it being shit is some pop culture joke about ipods I think, which not only makes it age terribly, but isn't even in the same spirit of the nerdy jokes they used to make.
References that ought to be dated work because they’re linked to Fry.
Even if you don’t get it, in the early seasons you can often pick up the context
Conversely, the apple and Boyle references fall utterly flat because they’re so utterly disconnected
I remember on the commentary track, they told this big story about how they originally planned to introduce this character Arcturus Fats, the world's greatest pool player, to shoot the garbage ball into space using a giant pool cue. They had all this work done to incorporate him into the plot but realized it would make the episode run too long by like a minute, so they had to cut him completely, and Fry missing the button was the quick fix replacement joke they came up with at the last minute. Then it happens and they all lose their shit and agree it was absolutely the correct choice to cut Arcturus Fats for Fry being too stupid to press a button.
derp, thanks, i only caught it for a second earlier when it was on really low volume and haven't heard it in a long time. also that scene where fry realizes he's his own grandfather and the prof says something like 'screw history, lets get the hell out of here' is just as good
>Billy West interview >Okay so there's this israeli squid alien. >*puts on Zoidberg voice* >Where's he from, israelitewwwpiter?
I think part of the reason Futurama was so kino was just how very funny the actors were on their own. West, LaMarche and DiMaggio were a powerhouse trio that brought in their own brand of zany comedy, West with his Yiddishisms and radio references, DiMaggio with his beatboxing and hiphop stuff, and LaMarche just by being amazing at impersonations. I don't know how those things all meshed together so well in a science fiction cartoon, but somehow it worked.
One of the DVDs had the audio of the table read for the first Robot Devil episode, Dan Castellaneta absolutely kills the regular cast on their read through, he reduces them to hysterics on most of his line reads.
Dan Castellaneta is simply an OG of comedy. I can't think of a single role he doesn't absolutely nail. Same can be said for Tress MacNeille. The Futurama boys are great, but those two are timeless greats on the level of Mel Blanc and June Foray.
>then please let me explain, my crimes were merely boyish pranks! >you stole from boyscouts, nuns and banks! >ah don't blame me, blame my upbringing! >please stop sinning while I'm signing
Absolute kino. The original Futurama run is up there with peak Simpsons.
Bros I’ve tried on 3 separate occasions to watch the rebooted series and I always run out of steam by the “robot davinci episode” because it feels so soulless and not funny. Does it get better? Should I try again?
The reboots are genuinely bad. Go watch the highlight episodes because there's still some gold in there that almost reaches to the same peak of the original run.
Movies >Bender's Big Score >Bender's Game
The only two DECENT movies. Not great, but much better than the others.
Season 6 >The Late Phillip J Fry >A Clockwork Origin
Both fantastic episodes. One is very poignant and heart touching while also being fricking hilarious, the other is just genuinely a fun episode and premise that reminds me of early Futurama.
>Fry drives his homosexual grandfather out to an a-bomb testing site to keep him safe >proceeds to immediately frick his own grandmother >becomes his own grandfather >becomes the savior of the universe as a result
Fry lore is something else.
>You know what sucks about being a slave? They make you work all the time and never pay you. >You know what else sucks about being a slave? The hours.
Frickin gets me every time.
>my god, were defenseless! Like fish in a barrel!
Options? >my instinct is to hide in this barrel, like the Wiley fish
It’s dumb as frick but gets me every time
>described this exact part of the book to someone last night >come to Cinemaphile >it's the very first thread without any other context
frick off glowBlack folk
It's the laughing from Bender, Fry and Zapp that gets them beaten up again that's so funny. >hahaha, stop, you're killing me! >stop! You're killing me!
>Originally, Zapp Brannigan was going to be voiced by Phil Hartman. However, Hartman died on May 28, 1998 before production began on Futurama. Billy West's characterization of Zapp is based, in part, on Phil Hartman's voice.
Billy West still absolutely owned that role though. As much as >I miss Phil Hartman
I have to be honest in admitting that I don’t know if he’d have done it better
Billy West still absolutely owned that role though. As much as >I miss Phil Hartman
I have to be honest in admitting that I don’t know if he’d have done it better
Phil Hartman was a legend but Billy West just made the role. I can't imagine any other voice would work half as well for Zapp

Futurama is the most reddit show of all time, right after Community.
Unfunny garbage
zoom
I've heard that said before by contrarians on this board and its just not true, Futurama is based as hell with characters like Bender, Professor Farnsworth, and Zapp Brannigan. Rick and Morty, Archer, Bob's Burgers, bojack and the Simpsons are much more the "reddit" adult cartoons.
archer and simpsons at least have some good seasons though those have obviously long past
I don't hate every rick and morty episode either but those shows definitely feel like they speak to Reddit's philosophies and common personality traits
Archer is certified dogshit mate.
Bojack is kino, it just got memed hard. It has the ending Mad Men should have had.
Normal words but horse guy.
Bojack is for fancy coffee drinking beanie wearing homosexuals
>Archer
Its predecessor, Frisky Dingo, is much better.
>7152 MAPLE DRIVE.
>Sounds nice.
old futurama had excellent dialogue and deliveries.
big brain am winning again might be top tier
I marathoned it a couple years ago, up until the movies it holds up very well. Right after them you see it going downhill from the very first episode of season 7, which I didn't even finish. The first sign of it being shit is some pop culture joke about ipods I think, which not only makes it age terribly, but isn't even in the same spirit of the nerdy jokes they used to make.
The show's as lousy as it is brilliant!
well said, it fell off hard after the movies, but even then, it's still better than most adult animation today
The Susan boil joke is probably the best example of an incredibly lazy reference that aged horribly on release, let alone a year after
The Lucy Liu stuff is also dated.
Not that much. In the context of it being the future it isn't distracting that fry has the hotties for a diva living 1000 years before.
Nah, you don't need to know her. Even Nixon works if you aren't knowledgable about him.
maybe a little but
>Fry... I'll never forget you... MEMORY DELETED
lives rent free in my head
Kek. I almost shit myself laughing the first time I saw that
I am Lucy Liu.
Give me your spines.
References that ought to be dated work because they’re linked to Fry.
Even if you don’t get it, in the early seasons you can often pick up the context
Conversely, the apple and Boyle references fall utterly flat because they’re so utterly disconnected
I believe... what I was PROGRAMED TO BELIEVE
Kek, always loved that line
>Compliment her. Tell her she looks thin!
>You seem malnourished. Are you suffering from internal parasites?
>that last season
never happened in my head
Which "last" season there's like 3 and soon to be 4 final seasons
>Who needs courage, when you have A GUN?
IF WE CAN HIT THAT BULLSEYE. THE REST OF THE DOMINOES WILL FALL LIKE A HOUSE OF CARDS. CHECKMATE.
>Who was that guy?
>YOUR MOMMA
the big red button that Fry misses and says "oops"
I remember on the commentary track, they told this big story about how they originally planned to introduce this character Arcturus Fats, the world's greatest pool player, to shoot the garbage ball into space using a giant pool cue. They had all this work done to incorporate him into the plot but realized it would make the episode run too long by like a minute, so they had to cut him completely, and Fry missing the button was the quick fix replacement joke they came up with at the last minute. Then it happens and they all lose their shit and agree it was absolutely the correct choice to cut Arcturus Fats for Fry being too stupid to press a button.
GRUNKA LUNKA DUNKETY DARMED GUARDS
WE GET IT!
it's SHUT THE HELL UP!
Their reactions to the Grunka Lunkas are my favorite thing in the entire show
>look, those disgusting little men are starting to sing!
>Tell them I hate them
I hereby place an order for one cheese pizza
It takes a lot of courage to drink from an open can, wishing that wienerroaches haven't nestled. - Botbot
>From this day forth, Robot House is on dodecatuple-secret probation!
ROBOT HOUSE!
>Look at me! I'm Dr. Zoidberg! Homeowner!
>Don't be a fool, you idiot!
>I'll be whatever I want to do!
>to shreds you say...
And his wife?
Kif, I’ve made it with a woman
Inform the men
One of my favorite bits in the whole series.
>Scruffys gonna die the way he lived
>I've never seen you before
>I aint seen you before neither
>Toilets and boilers, boilers and toilets. Plus that one boiling toilet.
>Fire me if in you dare.
Why does Ross, the largest friend, not simply eat the other 5?
Do you think voregays wrote for Futurama?
the show feels like it was written by guys who didn't use the internet after 2001
>turn up the radio!
>WE'RE LANDIN ON THE MOO-
>*click*
i dont know why this always makes me laugh as much as it does
It's Whaling on the moon
derp, thanks, i only caught it for a second earlier when it was on really low volume and haven't heard it in a long time. also that scene where fry realizes he's his own grandfather and the prof says something like 'screw history, lets get the hell out of here' is just as good
>oh, so we're taking lessons on 'not interfering with the past' from Mr. I'm My Own Grandpa over here, now?
You there, what's your name?
Most folks just call me orange joe
>domo arigato, Mr. Roboto
>The element of surprise. Surprise!
>BEEEE EEEEEEN DER
>B E N D E R
>BEEEE EEEEEEN DER
even something as simple as Bender singing his name is a timeless quoteable bit to me
>BEE!
>EEE!
>ENN!
>DEEEEUUURRREEEEEURRREEEEUUU--
>gets muted by Hermes
Absolute fricking gem
PROFESSOR
LAVA
HOT
nixon was the best
It's amusing to me the only reason anyone under 40 knows anything about Richard Nixon is Groening's intense unending butthurt at his existence.
it's pretty jarring even for someone who was there for it
I think it's high time we as a nation regarded Lee Harvey Oswald as an American hero
>If only I had my wallet with me
>It's free
>mmorpg noises
>"Ow! Fire hot!
>"The professey will help!"
>"Ouuaah!! Fire INDEED hot!"
> Your lyrics lack subtlety! You can't just have your characters announce how they feel! That makes me feel angry!
zoidberg best berg
>Billy West interview
>Okay so there's this israeli squid alien.
>*puts on Zoidberg voice*
>Where's he from, israelitewwwpiter?
>Back when i was full of piss and vinegar.
>... and my bed wasn't.
>I was going to eat that mummy!
>then please let me explain, my crimes were merely boyish pranks!
>you stole from boyscouts, nuns and banks!
>ah don't blame me, blame my upbringing!
>please stop sinning while I'm signing
Absolute kino. The original Futurama run is up there with peak Simpsons.
almost perfect digits. Futurama and Mission Hill both seem to capture the turn of the millenium better than any other shows
>I saw that, you were good
Bros I’ve tried on 3 separate occasions to watch the rebooted series and I always run out of steam by the “robot davinci episode” because it feels so soulless and not funny. Does it get better? Should I try again?
The reboots are genuinely bad. Go watch the highlight episodes because there's still some gold in there that almost reaches to the same peak of the original run.
Movies
>Bender's Big Score
>Bender's Game
The only two DECENT movies. Not great, but much better than the others.
Season 6
>The Late Phillip J Fry
>A Clockwork Origin
Both fantastic episodes. One is very poignant and heart touching while also being fricking hilarious, the other is just genuinely a fun episode and premise that reminds me of early Futurama.
Otherwise some other decent episodes are
Lethal Inspection
Silence of the Clamps
Law and Oracle
Cold Warriors
Over-Clockwise
Naturama
Thanks fren
Benders game is a great dungeons and dragons parody I watch it alot. Probably the only movie out of the bunch I really liked
Relatable
JUST REMEMBER THAT SCOOTY PUFF JNR. SUUUUuuuuuuᵘᵘᵘᵘᵘᵘᵘᵘᶜᵏˢ
Kek
>So I sent wave after wave of my own men at them until their kill limits were reached and they shut down!
Kino
For me it's when Fry pulls the calendar back down to the female.
based fry impregnating his own grandmother
would you be able to resist
>Fry drives his homosexual grandfather out to an a-bomb testing site to keep him safe
>proceeds to immediately frick his own grandmother
>becomes his own grandfather
>becomes the savior of the universe as a result
Fry lore is something else.
>Oh, a lesson on not changing history from Mr. I'm-My-Own-Grandpa!
>it's not uncharted, you lost the chart!
>Sir, the characters in the HoloShed have come to life again.
>Dammit, last time that happened I had 3 paternity suits.
>Spare me your space age techno babble, Atilla the hun
>NO PUT HOLE IN SPACE CANOE!
>Hey, this guy's an ox; he's got oxen-like strength. He needs a nickname, let's call him "Clamps"
>Clamps? CLAMPS? THAT'S MY NAME YA KNUMSKULL
Literally me
>I'm taking the next pimp mobile off this planet!
LEELA!? Oh thank god, I've never been so happy to be beaten up by a woman.
>The key to victory is the element of surprise… Surprise!
>You know what sucks about being a slave? They make you work all the time and never pay you.
>You know what else sucks about being a slave? The hours.
Frickin gets me every time.
For me it’s
>the less fortunate get all the breaks!
>not horrible fan upscale
>alright I give what's the catch?
>no catch, although we are technically in New Jersey
>Not 1 place even remotely liveable.
>now that the garbage is in space doctor, perhaps you can help me with my sexual inhibitions.
>with Gusto
The music kills me every time.
Is this Rick and Morty? What episode?
I am carl brain.
BACK FROM HIS CAMPAIGN AGAINST THE PACIFISTS OF THE GANDHI NEBULA
>If I die, tell my wife I said "Hello"
>I find the most erotic part on the female body is the bobbie-
If we hit that bullseye, the rest of the dominoes should fall like a house of cards. Checkmate
My favorite.
He just won't stop with the social commentary...
EROTIC
>my god, were defenseless! Like fish in a barrel!
Options?
>my instinct is to hide in this barrel, like the Wiley fish
It’s dumb as frick but gets me every time
>please leela you're the only woman to ever love me
>I NEVER LOVED YOU
>I mean sexually.
Zapp is honestly up there with Homer and Cartman as some of my favourite cartoon characters.
>described this exact part of the book to someone last night
>come to Cinemaphile
>it's the very first thread without any other context
frick off glowBlack folk
PATHETIC HUMANS, PREPARE TO WRITE DOWN THE RECIPE!
That robot food Bender had looked pretty good.
Based.
>Morbo congratulates our gargantuan cyborg president. May death come quickly to his enemies!
Who /morbo/ here?
>WINDMILLS DO NOT WORK THAT WAY
>GOODNIGHT
BAM HIT IT WITH THE SPUCE WEASEL
> tell my wife i said hello
>when a thread turns political
>WHO’S THERE?
>Bender, it’s me.
>FRY WHO?
And also
>Why…WHY…..WHY DIDN’T I BREAK HIS LEGS?
>Fry, don't you recognize me?
>Hermes?
>...
>THAT'S COMIN' OUT OF YOUR PAY
>[crying lobster sounds]
>she's built like a steakhouse, but she handles like a bistro!
EROTIC
>Women no dunk, but good fundamentals. That more fun to watch.
Regardless of the episode being fetishbait, that line still cracks me up
It's the laughing from Bender, Fry and Zapp that gets them beaten up again that's so funny.
>hahaha, stop, you're killing me!
>stop! You're killing me!
Fry's reaction to his balance always gets me
Are they still rebooting this? There's just no way it isnt going to be terrible
oh god i didn't even know. it's just going to be jokes about trump and covid, right?
This cracks me up every single time
>huh, didn't hurt that time.
You'll only win a smaller silver fiddle, also i guess ill kill one of you.
>Shall I fire on them now, sir?
>Not yet Kif. In the game of chess, you can never let your adversary see your pieces.
>Are we there yet?
>We'll be there soon enough
>But that's not soon enough
Hands down one of the funniest scenes in the entire series:
The honorable Judge Whitey himself!
All hail femputer!
>Originally, Zapp Brannigan was going to be voiced by Phil Hartman. However, Hartman died on May 28, 1998 before production began on Futurama. Billy West's characterization of Zapp is based, in part, on Phil Hartman's voice.
Still hurts
Fricking Andy Dick.
Billy West still absolutely owned that role though. As much as
>I miss Phil Hartman
I have to be honest in admitting that I don’t know if he’d have done it better
He did nail it
>Billy West's characterization of Zapp is based, in part, on Phil Hartman's voice.
thats wrong though
Phil Hartman was a legend but Billy West just made the role. I can't imagine any other voice would work half as well for Zapp
AHHH! Fire indeed hot!
SHOW US THIS "THE WHEEL"!
Bingo! Whatever it is, it's twenty times heavier than a boot!
Oh, nothing sordid, I assure you! Simply vomit on me, ever so gently, while I humiliate a pheasant.
I apologize for nothing!
Hands down my favourite episode. Also includes my favourite visual gag in the series when they throw a ball to distract the anubis guards
NIXON
ALWAYS

ARR-ROOOOOOOOOO
WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF TOMORROW!
Your mistletoe is no match for my TOW missile!
>DEATH.... BY SNU SNU
>what are you gay?
>You know what I like best about you Umbriel? You find me fascinating, even when I'm not claiming to be a israeliteel thief or a lion tamer.
>LIONS? There are sea lions on the land?
>Yep. We call them land sea lions. I tame them.
I REQUEST A SATANIC FUNERAL!
That guy was too based for TV. He was willing to fight for your right to do wrong.
To shreds, you say?
Well, getting the brain out was the easy part, the hard part was getting the brain out
>war were declared
Would you watch a Scary Door 15 min run time Adult Swim spinoff?
>Would you watch a Scary Door 15 min run time Adult Swim spinoff?
Yes. But I want more Hamlet Factory first.

Yes please, it's always kino
"Me... feel... a bit better... in cognitive faculties."
always stuck with me, I'm surprised I've never heard a setup for a getting smarter within the same sentence joke in sci-fi before
You're on a scenic route in a state recreation known as the human mind. You ask a passerby for directions, only to find he has no face or something. Suddenly up ahead, a door in the road. You swerve, narrowly avoiding The Scary Door(tm)
Any "Farnsworth is a senile frick and contradicts himself from one sentence to the next" bit has to be my favorite on my current rewatch.
>Correct! Six thousand hulls!
And also
>It's a "leela and amy in bikinis" episode
no I'm... doesn't
As a kid I saw the episode where a female zoidberg tries to seduce fry and she dresses in lingerie. it made me feel.. things.
>Can you push me?
>I already did!
>Thank you!!
>*BAM*
>You'll be fired
That's not so bad
>Out of a canon into the sun
War were declared.
It's stuck in there with glue or something, I don't know!
>My experimental anti-pressure pill.
>I can't swallow that!
>Well then good news, it's a suppository!
